Shelly/Lauramax, anyone doing P90X-KENPO X

Is Kenpo X a really good workout? How would you compare it intensity wise to like KPC or drill max? I am thinking about ordering just it, but it's $29.95 so want to make sure it is worth the money.

The description on the website sounds good but value the wonderful people on this forum advice more than anything! TIA! :)

From BB website:
Kenpo X was created to give P90X users a high-intensity cardiovascular workout packed with lots of punching and kicking combinations to improve balance, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. During this workout you'll learn some of the most effective ways to defend yourself, while at the same time getting your body in peak condition.

I don't find KenpoX to be an intense cardio workout. Although I do enjoy it. To compare it to KPC or DM- no where near as intense. I think it serves a differnt purpose though in the P90X rotation. JMO

ETA: of course with anything you can modify up or down to increase or decrease the intensity a little

I agree that Kenpo X is not as high-intensity as most kickbox workouts, but it isn't meant to be. It works well in the P90X rotation, where the emphasis is on strength and muscle, therefore limiting cardio to reduce it's catabolic effects.

I do like that there are some moves that were not familiar to me (some blocks), which made them challenging. It is a nice, solid KP, drill-like workout, which can be made more intense with hand weights.

Of course, I think that most KB workouts can be made more intense as your form improves and you can punch harder and faster (I would usually do more reps of punches in the same amount of time they did theirs, getting in about 50% more punching).

Catherine & Kathryn -

Thank you both very much for your information. It sounds like this isn't a workout for me. I tend to build muscle too easily, especially in the thighs, so my main focus is cardio and high rep/low weight workouts. I really appreciate your information & saving me from spending $30 on a workout that I wouldn't do very often! :)

I LOVE KenpoX! I'm usually sweating bullets afterwards. They are right it isn't as intense, but man if you put 100% into it, you will be sweating that's for sure. I usually have DOMS for a day or two afterwards, but that's me and everyone is different. I'm not a big kickboxing girl, so this is perfect for me, I guess.

Good luck,
Marcia.

Jen - I love Kenpo X but if you're looking for a KB workout with the intensity of Cathe's, or the Powerstrikes, this ain't it. There is no 'cardio' portion, only punching and kicking drills. I think you should spend your money elsewhere:)

Kenpo X is without a doubt one of my favorite KB workouts, although it's more karate oriented than kickbox oriented.

As far as intensity level goes I think you'd all be pleasantly surprised (I know I was). According to my HRM KPC burns about 350 cals, KX about 420 cals. I think the difference is the cardio is very steady & keeps your HR up thru the entire workout, while other KB workouts have kind of rest periods between combos. Of all the KB workouts I've compared w/my HRM so far Kenpo X has come out on top when it comes to cals burned.

Also it's about as high as it gets when it comes to fun factor, not to mention Tony Horton is just dreeeeeaaaaaaaamy.....

As far as Drill Max goes, well, nothing compares to DM......}(

Shelley & Lauramax - Thank you both very much!!! :)

I am always looking for new workouts to keep things fun so maybe I will hold off on this one for a while but I will probably end up getting it, LOL! I just can't help myself & if it is fun I will actually want to do it, like KPC, Drill Max, and Powerstrike 1- I always look forward to those.

Wow Laura, I am surprised that it burns that many calories, that is awesome!

Is this a 60 min workout? Thanks again everyone!

I have to agree with Lauramax on this. I started P90X one week ago. Based on info I read about KenpoX I was expecting it to be easy. It was not overly hard, thanks to doing Cathe kickbox tapes. But, what I like about this workout is that Tony takes every move at a steady rate. My HR sored higher than in PlyoX, but my breathing remained calm and steady. I felt in control. I was out of breath during nearly all of PlyoX. That was very interesting to me. I really love KenpoX and look forward to doing it again this week.
