Shelley-hip questions

Hi Shelley, I decided to start another thread, I hope you do not mind!!

I wanted to ask about your hip...again, hope you do not mind! Can you feel the discomfort when you stretch? Are you, or have you, ben doing any specific or extra stretches to target the hips? Do you ever feel any pain on the outside of the knee?

I am not going to go on like I know all there is to know about running woes...because I do not! It is just that I joined this training group for this marathon and they have provided us with some excellent speakers about running injuries, how they occur and how to fix them. I've been told that hip issues are VERY common and often can be fixed with specific stretches and some strength work (which I doubt your bad ass needs). Also, I wanted to look up some things in my running books.

Hi Sarah,

Not Shelley here (obviously!), but I would love to know what you've learned about hip injuries and running. I trashed mine during my marathon training about 5 years ago and I quit running and switched to cycling after the marathon b/c of it (after 20 years of running). Cycling has been pretty good to my hip, although lately it's been acting up, especially after doing lower body work - walking lunges probably. I have 2 hip issues. The worst one and the one that acts up the most is on my hip bone and the doctor said it's most likely bursitis. The other hip issue I started to get from running was more in the lower hip on the side - kind of where the widest part of the hip is - for me anyway.

So is there something great I can start doing to help???

I too have hip problems. I pulled a very small muscle that is outside of the hip bone area and connects under the glutes. It's name is something like Laite muscle. I went to physical therapy and learned some stretches that help. I also learned how 1 little muscle can affect the muscles close to it. Getting the right stretches and exercises to help the area is very important. They wanted me to continue PT, but financial and time wise I just couldn't fit it in. So now when it bothers me, I know what I need to do work through it.

Oh goodness, I just saw this. Haven't been around much today!

"Can you feel the discomfort when you stretch? Are you, or have you, ben doing any specific or extra stretches to target the hips? Do you ever feel any pain on the outside of the knee?"

There's no discomfort when I stretch or do any other workout either. I haven't been doing anything extra though. No pain on the outside of my knee:)

If you find anything out, I'd be thrilled to know:)

Thanks!

Well, one thing I am learning is that hip problems are often the result of one limb being shorter than the other. The longer leg will take a beating due to more force and the outside of the pelvis becomes irritated. The hip will normally warm up during the run but hurt and get extremely "tight" hours after the run. Heel lifts are used to provide a small lift to ease the pain, but not neccessarily completely make up the length difference.

Shelley, when you look in the mirrior, does one hip appear higher than the other?? This may take an MD to figure out. Hey, have your SO measure your legs!

Shelley, how are your feet? Knee and hip problems can originate with simple foot woes like under or over pronation. I over-pronate and it's been the bane of my existance but I got orthotics and they saved me. Great shoes, oft replaced are a good place to start and a possible trip to the podiatrist if your hip problems are baffling and unressponsive. Leg length descrepcancy is usually attribatable to one side being more tight than the other. Just a few milimeters difference can cause great trouble. Good luck. I hope you resolve it soon!

Bobbi, it's so good to see you!

I think I definitely need new shoes. Mine probably have more miles on them than they should. The leg length thing is very interesting. I'm going for my annual physical in June so I'll have the doctor check that out for me.

Thanks for all your input:)
