Hi everyone!

I've been lurking for a while but I noticed a recent flurry of interest in protein supplements so I thought I'd share my recent experience. I used to eat OK generally, not totally clean but a good amount (60-70 grams/day) of protein and pretty low sugar and carbs, lots of fruits and veggies. Over the last few months, my energy after workouts has been REALLY low, and I've been more tired than usual. This got to be so extreme that I went and got my thyroid checked! It was fine, and the doctor couldn't suggest an alternate medical cause.

I decided to get really serious about my diet and consider supplements after reading about some of the other Cathe-ites experiences with BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) and protein shakes. I really love to work out, and I realize that I work out like an athlete - maybe I need to eat better to support the demands on my body (duh!).

First, I upped my protein intake to 1g per pound of bodyweight, and increased my water intake, since I suspect that dehydration may sometimes have also played a part in my overall fatigue. This really helped! Muscle soreness was reduced, energy was up, and athletic performance was better (in weights AND cardio workouts).

Then, a few weeks ago, I started taking BCAAs (I ordered these from bodybuilding.com: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/univ/bcaa.html) before and after my workouts. I am seriously amazed at how much better I feel. I still feel my muscles a bit the day after a workout, but it's nothing like the DOMS agony I used to get. My improvements are happening faster, and I have more energy all-around than I did previously. I don't "bonk" in the middle of a workout anymore. I don't feel like taking a nap all the time. My average of 7.5-8 hours of sleep per night feels adequate (finally), I am WAYYY less sore after workouts and I feel great.

Right now I'm doing a freestyle rotation that I designed last year. When I tried it last fall, I had to quit after the first week because my legs hurt too much for me to even walk, much less work legs on consecutive days. Now it's giving me no trouble and I'm starting to see some real improvements on my lower half - hurrah!

I figured there might be other folks out there who, like me, were skeptical of supplements or who were trying to tweak their diets for particular results. For the record, I'm 33, pretty fit, and I've been working out for years and feeling pretty good most of that time, although my main focus has usually been on cardio more than weights. I think my tiredness and soreness really started to be a problem when I started to focus on lifting heavier weights. So...it looks like everyone is right about changing up the diet to support different activities.

Anyone else try the BCAAs? Or made other changes that had a big impact?

I half heartedly gave BCAA's a try. I have few bottles sitting in my cabinet. I should give them a try again. I know they help me with my appetite.;) I think it might have something to do with swallowing 8 horse pills before and after workout!!
Some of the trainers on T Nation have the women taking 10 pills before and 10 after a workout.
I hate swallowing so many pills, and huge pills at that!!!
Anyway, the trainers on T Nation swear by them. Now that I'm back into full swing with my Freestyle workout, I give them another try.

The same thing that happened to you, happened to me. The first try at Freestyle, I fried my legs. I had to stop. I've revisited the Freestyle building up with Jari Love workouts and that has helped me find my sweet spot for lower body work. I'm very pleased with the progress I'm making.

Can you post your workout routine? I would love to see how you are using Freestyle training.:)

Oh, here are the BCAA's I have.

I'm so glad you posted this ~ thank you!

I just started weight training back in April. I've been increasing my protein and cleaning up my diet gradually. Prior to that, I exercised and ate without much thought.

Now both my husband and I are getting serious about this. We just ordered samples of BSN's Lean Dessert protein powder, and we're reading what others have to say about adequate protein intake. Looks like we'll have to look at BCAAs as well. As for positive changes personally, I've noticed that I have drastically less DOMS since I started with Cathe, and the only thing I can think of is the change in diet. Prior to that, all of my workouts ~ like the FIRM or Tae Bo, for example ~ would have me in pain (the good kind :) ) for a few days. My most recent bout of DOMS was post-Muscle Max last week, and it wasn't bad. It was enough to get my attention, but it didn't make me wince every time I slid in and out of a chair. :D

Anyway, it's great to hear of others' experiences. I often use the search function on this forum, reading older posts in an attempt to get a feel for what might work for us.

Afreet, how many pills do you take before and after your workout?

 I could not take 8 pills before and after a work out. I struggle to take my vitamins.

Cynthia: the BCAA pills I'm using aren't that big (thank goodness), and I only take 2 before and 2 after. 10 pills?? Sheesh. I'm at work (hee!) but I'd be happy to post my rotation when I get home this afternoon. Alas, it's not because of my dedication to my job, but because the file is on my home computer.

LaughingWater: I also use the BSN Lean Dessert! I've read a lot of posts by FitnessFreak366 (what an amazing human being, BTW!), and many of her suggestions have really helped me out a lot. I like to put the Cinnamon Roll flavor in my oatmeal (when I eat oatmeal), I use the Vanilla Cream in shakes with strawberries and blueberries, and Chocolate Fudge when there needs to be chocolate. Which, for me, is often.

Yes, that is based on Christian Thibaudeau's recommendations if you're cutting. He had an online physic clinic for 2 women and that is what he prescribed. He swears by them for muscle preservation and building. John Beradi's is similar, but he spaces the doses out. I would much rather take them and get them out of the way! I'm glad you posted this one. I've been working out for years and could never understand why I was so wiped out after a workout. Whenever I was to go out with my friends I would tell them how my workout had me too tired, and they would always reply, "I thought working out was to give you energy," I never thought of supplements and increasing my protein. Although, I must say I've been following the advise of FitnessFreak and it's proved to be beneficial. I would be okay if I could get my diet cleaner. It's really hard for me when I get around my friends who enjoy cocktails and partying.
