Scars

Hi Ladies,

I recently fell and busted my nose and ended up getting 20 stiches.
It is healing fairly well, but the Neosporin strips that the Plastic
Surgeon recommended do not stick to my nose. Can our educated crowd please recommend something that will help me. I will greatly appreciate it. I fell while I was runnign and landed flat on my face about one month ago.

My husband had a severe dog bite last July and his plastic surgeon recommended NOT putting neosporin or anything like that on it. She did recommend covering it up when he works with tape (he's a carpenter) and heavy sunscreen. It healed quite well considering how bad it was.

Hi Josie,

You'll want to check with your plastic surgeon first, but I've been told that vitamin E oil (what you get when you break open a vitamin E capsule) will help lessen scars.

Thank you Colleen for responding. I do wear a lot of sunscree during the day and I cover it with makeup.

From what I understand after having a cyst removed off of my knee, is that putting neosporin and stuff on the area slow healing, but it can lead to a smoother looking scar. Now the surgeon differed in what the told me than the dermatologist. The surgeon said not to put anything on it. I used neosporin and after a month started using Mederma on it. It is really flat & smooth. Looks like a thin white line now. It has been over a year now.

Ny friend's husband is a general surgeon and she says cocoa butter is the best for scars. Never tried it so wouldn't know.

I had a large scar(from surgery) on my forearm a couple of years ago (it was grusome) !! Anyway, in physically therapy I learned massaging vitamin E and using a silcone patch will reduce the redness and the "raised" effect of the scar. The silicone patch is washable and reusable and works wonders..TRUST ME...I think that they are sold at walmart,jewel..etc

I was just about to recommend Mederma. My friend had foot surgery & was developing a keloid & her surgeon recommended that.

However about keeping the the healing wound with neosporin AND covered with a bandaid, it's old school to think that a cut needs to dry out to heal faster.

The Neosporin strips work, but they are a hassle to wear. Last year I wore them on one of my knees (I also fell...) and it was really hard to make them stick so I used first aid tape. You also have to wash the sheets daily and change them every 3-4 days. I wore them for about three months I think and to tell you the truth you have to look really close to see the scar and I scar pretty badly so that's amazing for me. I have used Mederma too but it gets expensive after awhile and you have to massage the scars with the lotion in order to break down the collagen and elastin fibers that form your scars. Another important point that I have to mention is the fact that both Mederma and Neosporin sheets work only with hypertrophic or keloid scars (those are the ones that are raised). If you tend to get hipotrophic scars (the ones that leave a hole in your skin) it won't work so don't spend money on those. Your diet also helps so if you don't do this already I suggest you increase your intake of Vit E, C and Omega Fatty Acids.

Hi Rose11,

The scar is on my nose and it is a little raised not too bad. I do take all of the vitamis that you mentioned and have been for a while.
I will continue to use the Neosporing strips at night, they are hard to wear during the day because of where the scar is. Thank you all again for the information.
