Satellite Internet Anyone?

We are gonna have to upgrad from dial-up, but the only option I have is satellite. I'd love to hear from anyone who has Wild Blue or Hughes.

Also there is a new one called Skyway - anyone have this one?

Thanks!

I use to have Satelite at my old house (I lived in the country). It worked fine...just on rainy days there was no internet. Sigh.... It's a lot like satelite tv...with too many clouds...there is no connection. But, it's soooo much faster than dial up. So, you are in for a treat. I don't remember the company that I had...but it worked fine. Just the dish was an eye sore...because of the location. But, you will love the upgrade on speed! Guaranteed!!!!

I have HughesNet. It's faster than dial-up, but nowhere near as fast as cable or FIOS. Our download speed is usually around 800 kbps and upload speed around 300 kbps. Unfortunately it's the only option for me also. And it's expensive!

When there is a change in the weather or when there is a big storm, the satellite would go out or it would go out intermittently until we go outside and tighten the connections.

I am going to check into Skyway. It is supposed to not be affected by the weather. It's a one way satellite connection, you go out through your phone line and in via satellite. Not sure if I explained that right. I'd love faster speeds, but not sure I'm willing to pay $60 a month for so-so speeds.

Thanks!

A gal at Video Fitness mentioned that she cannot always get reliable downloads with satellite .......I love Directv as an alternative to the cable companies.....I hate cable companies, and went to Verizon for internet when it came available and find it more reliable than cable....satellite though, I don't know anyone who has it because it is more expensive for some reason around here....let us know what you decide to do - interesting topic!

I've had WildBlue for about 18 months now. I live in an area where satellite internet is my only option (other than dial-up and I'll never go back to that again). It's speeds are slower than DSL and waaay slower than cable but it is faster than dial-up. Some of the things I don't like about it:

1. Price- it is very expensive. We pay $80.00 a month.

2. They have a thing called a Fair Access Policy. They limit the amount of bandwidth you can use in a month. This becomes a problem if you download a lot of stuff like I do. I like to download things from itunes, watch instant movies on Netflix, etc. and I have to be really careful and watch to make sure I don't go over that bandwidth level. If you do go over they slow your speed way down and keep it there until your usage drops to an acceptable level. I really hate this;(

3. No internet if it's stormy outside. This hasn't really been a problem for me though because of the climate where I live but I know it can be a problem for others.

When we first bought it was was called Direct(something) we thought maybe it was connected with Directv but it wasn't. Then they changed to Hughes Net. We haven't had problems and it is much faster than dial up which is our other option but with the phone not working half the time and downloading e-mail taking 30 or more minutes we decided on Satellite.

We do like it. We pay $60 a month. Yes it is expensive but if we want internet we really have no choice.

Haven't heard of the other companies that are mentioned.

I have WildBlue...It's ok...but like everyone says...it's not DSL...but way better than Dial up.

I live in the boonies so it's Satalite or Dial UP...or verizon wireless card...

My husband and I both can not be without internet...and a wireless card was way out of our budget.

Like everyone said...it sucks on rainy days...my internet goes out faster than my TV and I'd rather have the internet...priorities...I know.
