S&H Question

Cathlete
Just finished S&H chest segment and found that during the bench press, instead of keeping my feet on the edge of the step, I brought my knees up to my waist and crossed my legs at the ankles. Because my weight is getting heavier, this is the best way for me to assure that my lower back stays pressed into the step.

I thought of asking Cathe if this was acceptable, but decided that the opinions of the educated crowd are just as useful to me. Does anyone see any reason not to keep my legs raised during bench presses? Thanks!

Hi Nancy,

I'm not an expert by any means but do have back problems so I have to be very careful to keep my back pressed into the bench when doing any type of lying weight work. I have actually read that it is acceptable to bring your legs up like you describe. When doing this you are not only maintaining that low back retraction but adding a great way to strengthen your abs (keeping your legs raised like that).

Again, you've heard it time & time again, whatever you are doing to maintain appropriate form, listen to your body & make adjustments that keep you "comfortable."
