Ryan Shay

Hey...I don't know how many of you follow running, but I just read on CNN that Ryan Shay died today. He was about 5.5 miles into the men's Olympic marathon trials and he collapsed. He was only 28 and was married.

I am not deep into men's running, but his name stood out to me because I think I've read it in Runners World mags before. So sad! If you go to runnersworld.com and do a search of his name, you can bring up picks.

;(

I just heard about this. I have no idea who he is but to be 28 and to die in the middle of these trials in just tragic. How horrible.:-(

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I just read about this. It's very sad. I'm also curious what he died from. Usually when someone dies like this it stems from something that has gone undetected for all of his life. A life cut way to short. Very unfortunate and so very sad.

Very true.

My mom worries about me alot since I've taken up running/racing. She hears about these runner dying and it scares her. I try to tell her that most often it is exactly what Annette stated above so not to worry cause if something like that is going to kill me it's going to happen wether I run or not.

You're exactly right. You can't be scared to live you dream and that's what Ryan was doing. We all have a predetermined punch card so you mind as well live life to the last minute right?

That's so sad and tragic. I guess the small consolation is that he died doing something he loved. My heart breaks for his wife and family:-(

Take care
Laurie

I don't know what caused his death...I'm assuming what you all have - heart issues. I don't know if that means something like a murmur or a valve problem, or something else. I HAVE heard that marathon running increases the risk of a heart attack and I think it's because you can become dehydrated, and that makes the blood thicker....I don't know where I heard/read that. But you would think that something would have put up a red flag by now...you know?

It is sad to be so young and have this happen, but I agree - one light in this is that he accomplished some big dreams before he went.

:(

They just had a story about this on our local news since he was born and raised in northern Michigan. Apparently the whole Shay family are runners. They interviewed his dad and he said that even though they are all in shock, he is comforted by the idea that he died doing something he loved to do. Still.....very sad.

Yeah, I read today that he and his wife just married this past July! (clutching heart in sorrow!). She's a runner too - her name is Alicia and her maiden name is Craig.

I also read that Ryan was diagnosed with an enlarged heart at the age of 14, which is crucial for distance runners but can also cause problems. So sad!

;( ;( ;(

In high school, where I attended in Northern MI, Runner's Heart was a problem for one family in my community. This guy, who missed the Olympics by 1/100th of a second was running professionally in WA and died of a "heart attack," he was later confirmed having Runners Heart. I think his brother died of the same thing.
It's all over the news here, being in MI. Go to www.wzzm13.com or wood tv 8.

Shocking story about Ryan though.
