running: treadmill v. outdoors

Hi all!

I started a running program in January and love it. Because of the time of year, and trying to fit it into my family's schedule, I've only been running on a treadmill. With the weather getting nice, I'd like to start going out, but because of my kids, it's just easier to run downstairs and jump on my 'mill and be done!

I'm just curious if there's a big difference in treadmill running versus running outside (on asphalt, not trail running) and what sort of "adjustments" I'd have to make.

Thanks in advance!

When I was still a gym member I used to run on a treadmill. A treadmill is more boring for me and I really need a tv in front of my nose to make me stick to it. Music only doesn't cut it. I need something to take my eyes of the clock ;-)

Since March 2004 I only run outside. It is way more relaxing and totally empties my head. I always feel great after my run. Impact is worse though because asphalt is a harder surface then the treadmill.

Hi Michele

I'm not a 'seasoned' runner (by any stretch) but I hope this helps...

I've been running for the last couple of months only using a treadmill (cos the weather in the UKs not been that good), ready for my first 5k in May.

I've read that if you're using a treadmill, a 1% incline is a fairly good way of judging what it'll be like outside. Also, the belt can sometimes assist by 'pulling' you along - making a bit easier too(?)

I did run for a few months outside last year and I have to say, I found it a lot harder - even the slightest hill made a difference.

Hope that helps,
Andrea

There is definitely a difference between the two.

I run on the treadmill all winter, when it's too cold to go outside. About March (this week actually), I go back outside. I run 3 miles of hills on the asphalt. It's tougher. Not only is the impact greater, the natural resistance of the wind makes a difference. I always feel like I get better results from running outside because of the difficulty factor.

I don't see that you need to make any adjustments, except prepare yourself for some soreness when you first switch to outside! Good luck!

There is two big differences for me. One is impact, but that has already been mentioned. To help with that, I run on dirt and gravel trails. They are a alot prettier than running on the street, too!
I also think it is more challenging because of wind and hills. Hills you can simulate on the treadmill. But wind..... You think that you are doing great on a treadmill and then you get out in on ly 10 or 5 mile wind gusts, and what a difference! I personally love the challenge!}(

I never enjoyed running on a treadmill as I did running the roads. The treadmill always required more concentration and felt like a workout, whereas running outside just breezed. Walking is the same for me. I have to stay very focused to keep a pace up. And in the spring, being outside amidst all the beauty Mother Nature has to offer has it's own rewards.

I have a million or so different courses I can pick from. I know the distance betwen various points within many miles of this old house so I could keep track of mileage easily and I'd choose from hilly runs, including enormous hills for hill repeats, flat runs, great for speedwork or just scenic routes for pure pleasure.

The difference between running on trails and asphalt was indiscernable to me except in regard to cars. High traffic can be dangerous and stinky.

Personally, I would take outdoors running over the 'mill anyday but I know my niece feels just the opposite.;) The only way you'll know is to get out there and run!

I used to run solely on a treadmill, and even though I liked it, it still definitely felt like a workout (like the other poster said), and I didn't always look forward to running. During this time, I tried to run outside a few times and didn't like it because it was harder! The treadmill is easier (even with a 1% grade) because the belt moves for you and it's completely flat.

Now that I don't have access to a treadmill, I was forced to run outside and found out that it's the greatest thing! Yes, it will feel harder at first, but you'll get used to it. When you're cruising along with a breeze on your face, you will love running outside! I don't even like running with music now (on a treadmill I had to listen to music or watch TV) because it's distracting. I just listen to my breathing and my feet hitting the ground and get into a rhythm.

PS Try running on a rubber track at a local high school. It will feel as cushioned as a treadmill but you'll still be outside. Yes, you're running in circles, but at least you're not running in place!

You guys have really inspired me to start running again. I used to be a treadmill runner and shyed away from running outside because it was so much more difficult and I couldn't go nearly as long as I could on a treadmill. But every time I see a runner I get envious and think...gee, that looks so fun.

Someone told me that SHOES make the difference. Be sure you buy the best running shoes you can afford. Your body takes quite a pounding on the road. Your joints will appreciate the extra cushion.

Thanks, everyone, for all the great advice. I guess I'm gonna have to give it a go!

I just need to figure out how to get away from my kids...out run them, maybe?;-)

I guess I'm the opposite. I find running outside much easier than running on a treadmill. I also like the fact that I'm in control when I run outside. I feel like the treadmill's in control when I'm using it. I feel like I have to keep up with it or else I'll fall backwards or something. It's nerve racking for me.

I'm running in the 8K Shamrock Shuffle this Sunday! www.shamrockshuffle.com. Can't wait!! :D

Being outside is great, and I love to walk outside. But I've found that a treadmill is more practical for me for getting my workout done. I never have to worry about the weather or the time of day and safety (I live in NYC), or the traffic. It's much easier for me to get my workout done on a treadmill, though I listen to music AND watch tv AND run a fan while I'm on it. :)

Dani! Your first race, that is so exciting! I think you are going to love it. I remember being so struck by the people who stood at the finish and encouraged us all in. The energy and good feelings are addictive, so watch out. :) Have a great run!

Bobbi, Judy and Michele...Angie too!

Thank you so much!:) I woke up this morning and saw your posts and they gave me butterflies. I'm getting really excited now. I'll definitely let you all know how I do!! Thanks again!!!!!

Dani :7

Dani, just wait until you are on the starting line! It's wonderful. The excitement makes you faster and what seemed difficult in training runs becomes effortless and joyful! I used to laugh, sing, talk, joke and have a blast! And the finish, whoo hoo, it's purely fabulous!

I also used to dream I was in the port a potty and everyone started without me the night before, LOL! Happily that dream never came true. Warm up and line up early. Start toward the front but behind the greyhounds who are going to go out so fast, your head will spin. Find someone who runs a similar pace and try to beat 'em! You can!

Oh, thanks so much for the tips Bobbi!!! I'm glad you said that the excitement will make it seem effortless. Thanks so much again!

I'm cracking up about your port a potty dream!

I just checked out the picture of your cat!! That picture is priceless!!!! It's hilarious!

Ooooooooh, how exciting! Your first race. Have fun with it.

I always find with racing that I have to watch my pace at the start. It's so easy to take off really fast (like the greyhounds) and then you're left with nothing at the end. And really, what's a race without trying to beat one last person through the chute?;)
