Running suffering from weight training?

OK all you runners/Cathe addicts: a question. It seems that the more weight trainingI am doing with Cathe - which I love - the more fatigued my legs are. To the point where I need to cut my runs short. I used to be a distance runner (40 miles per week) but now keep it to 3 times a week 4-5 miles per run. Disappointing that the running has become such an effort since I do love it. Any thoughts on what the out of breath, tiredness, achy legs is all about? Have tried lightening up on the leg weights, but so far not so good. Suggestions? Many thanks. BTW did Muscle Endurance this a.m. Love that workout.

Hi!

I have not experienced that problem, but I have never lifted as heavy as Cathe on the leg portion. I do half of Cathe's weight on the leg and full weight for the upper body. What also really helps me recover faster is a lot of stretching everyday and yoga once a week. Maybe that will help you. Also, are you running on low fuel? Are you eating enough and cleanly? Many times when my legs feel tired and heavy my eating was too little or just not great.

You also might want to take a few days off from running entirely. Your body is telling you something. Listen to it.

Hi Fit over 40,

Are you doing your weight workouts before your run? If so, that is the problem. I felt the same way when I would do PUB before my run and felt out of breath and tired. Now I do my weight training in the morning and my cardio in the evening, and I only run when I do an upper body workout and when I do my lower body workout I do a different kind of cardio. I'm a marathon runner, I hope this helps.

I'm not a marathon runner, just a stumbling beginner, but that's what I alwways plan too.

Dutchie42, who's really happy today :)

I'm fairly new to running, but this is my workout schedule. Run 2 to 3 times a week, and do one day of lower body weight training. I keep my weight training far from the day I do my long run. So if I do my w.t. on monday, I'll wait till the weekend to do my long run. This gives my legs enough time to gather strength to run for a long time and not feel fried.

Wow - thanks all for your insight. From what I gather, I am probably working my legs too heavy and too close to my runs. Thinking if I do legs once a week early in the week (say Tues) then run Thurs Sat Sun I will be ok. Also need to look at the diet. I think with the extra weight training, I need more protein. Have to say I will kind of miss all those squats and lunges - ok not the "low ends!". Great advice all. I greatly appreciate it.
:)

Jenni - you are right. I am in need of rest. Been a very very stressful two months (two parents with cancer, me caretaking). Takes a stranger to tell me what I need. BTW both parents doing well. But even they are telling me to go easier. More water, more protein less leg work, more rest!

Hi Fit over 40! I am another marathon runner. The stress you are going thru could be the problem also. Caregiving can take alot out of you. I know already you are a very good and special person..:)...I used to always lift for my legs 3 times a week and it never affected my running, in fact sometimes when I lifted right before a long run my legs felt great during the run, I have always been different... ;) But...my legs were always a bit bigger than I wanted. So when I cut back to 2 times a week (P90X and Cathe) my legs got smaller (first time ever) and as I am getting over an injury my running speed seems to be picking up nicely. I am like Josie currently training for a marathon and also running 40 plus a week. I don't use heavy weights anymore, about the same or less on most of Cathe's and I try and do some floorwork twice a week. I think what you are planning should be the trick! Good luck....:)...Carole
