running meter ??

So my son tells me my DIL might like to have a gizmo that tells her how far she has run in a particular run. I'm sure there is something out there that monitors that info. I have a HR monitor and that's not it. I don't think a pedomoter is really what I'm looking for. What is it I am looking for, lol?

Thanks.

Google Forerunners to get an idea of brands and prices. You wear it like a watch and it can tell you your pace, speed, distance and headrests! Very cool and useful for runners indeed. The last one I purchased was around $125.00! Goodluck!

I am getting my first garmin next week and I can't wait. If a garmin is not in your budget and you have an iPhone or Droid there are software programs that have similar functions. I have been using runkeeper on my iPhone to keep track of my mileage and pace.

Yup, as the ladies say... Garmin Forerunner is the bomb! There's the app for your iPod Touch too, like the iPhone... but I think you have to buy something to put in your shoe? I say... Forerunner. It has a lot of nice features.

Do you gals know if the calorie counter on it is accurate at all? I'm thinking about getting one. Is it comfortable? it looks a little big.

I don't know how "accurate" any computerized calorie counter is. So much depends on your own metabolism, VO2 max and what-not. My calories burned calculations vary between the HR Monitor, the treadmill, the online calculations. Every one of them comes up with a different value.

The Garmin is comfortable, and is big and ugly. But it's such a cool gadget. If you run or ride a bike, or do any cardio outside where you go a distance, it's great. It's good on the treadmill too, but you don't get the full benefits of determining your pace and speed.

As with most gadgets, the calorie count is pretty general, IMO.

I think it's comfortable enough, but better if you get the optional velcro wrist strap (sold at Amazon) that you can use to replace the rubber wrist strap.

I don't think it's that big : like a big, chunky watch, but certainly not as huge as earlier Garmins were.
