Running in sand....

TeTe

Okay, I'm going to the beach in about a week (please keep your fingers crossed that there are no hurricanes!!!) and I want to do some running on the beach in the early morning hours. This is probably sooo stupid, but, should I wear shoes? Barefoot just doesn't seem right. If I wear shoes, what kind?

Thanks for any advice!!

:)

When I ran on the beach in Cuba, I wore my regular running shoes. It was lovely to be out there early, before anyone else was on the beach!

Whenever I'm visiting family in Miami I walk/run on the beach in my regular workout shoes.

Sorry to hijack your thread TeTe but I just wanted to ask Shelley when was it that you visited Cuba? The reason I ask is because I'm half Cuban, my dad is Cuban. I've always hoped to have a chance to go and visit.

You could wear either regular running shoes, or maybe a lighter shoe, but definitely not barefoot (too much chance of getting cut on glass or a shell, or stepping on who-knows-what, like rusty metal).

Chastity - I've been twice. Once in 2002 and once in 2004. It was fabulous and I'd go again in a second if I could afford it.

It's a lot easier to get there from here than it is from there ;)

Yeah, it's gotten even harder now. I've heard of $7,500 fees for US citizens who get caught going there. I'd love to go!!!!

i know the answer to this one. if you feet are soft and used to wearing shoes all the time, wear shoes!!!! when i went to costa rica last year i ran in the said bare foot for 30 min. i had ENORMOUS blisters under all of my toes. it took forever to heal. if your feet don't have calluses on them, its like taking sandpaper to them and rubbing off all of the skin. not a good feeling.

I run on the beach all the time. Well, when running is in my rotation anyway. Regular running shoes work great. And if you want an interesting way to do intervals, alternate between the hard packed sand near the water and the soft loose sand higher up. You will feel the BURN.

Yes, running in sand can be HARD if the sand is not firm packed. You will definitely get a workout that way!

I will echo the others that shoes are a must. Not only dangers of stepping on sharp objects, but I just don't think it's good for your feet. Coming from someone who's been battling plantar fasciitis, running barefoot, even on soft sand, is a big fat no-no!

I'm jealous...I love running on the beach....Have fun!

You should always wear shoes when running, sand or not. Trust me, those of us who have PF know the dangers of barefoot running or working out.

I run on the beach a lot too. I always make sure it's hard packed sand. Soft sand is rough on your hip joints... not a good thing. Enjoy yourself. Running on the beach is one of my favorite things to do!
