Running in high humidity...ugh!

Hi to my runner friends who live in humid climates...

So, I got up bright and early to try and run this morning.. I live in Michigan, and we are experiencing the major heat and humidity as is pretty much the rest of the country right now.

I walked out onto to my driveway and walked right back into the house.. the air was so thick I thought I would drown if I started to breathe in the air too hard!

How do you runners do it in these kind of conditions? :) I think I'd rather run in a snowstorm than what it was like today. Do you EVER get used to it?

I don't mind running in rain, snow, fog, or heat, but man it sure was brutal today. I hope this breaks soon, otherwise, I'm going to have to dust off the treadmill and get back on it! nooooo!

I totally can relate. I live in fort lauderdale. I went running outside for 30 in at 5:45a.m. on monday. I felt like i couldn't breath b/c the air was so darn thick!!!! The sweat also doesn't evaporate so i tend to overheat. this is why i bought a treadmill but sometimes i just need to get outdoors to run.

Hi Lynn,
Generally in the summer, I always get my run in before 7 am. The earlier, the better as, of course, the heat and humidity are much less then. I'd say I'm used to the humidity, but I still hate it, and it definitely slows down my already-slow pace! Still, for me, it beats the dreadmill.

What I never understand is the runner or two who you see out there midday -- I gotta wonder if they have some kind of death wish. It's just not safe.

Let's hope we get relief soon!

Glad to hear I am not alone!!

Cathy, LOL on the term, "dreadmill"... even with a seriously good playlist on my IPod!

I agree about those mid day runners.. I don't know how they do it, either. Crazy!!

Hi Lynn,

I live in Southwest Georgia and actually try to do my outside workouts in the evenings. The humidity in the mornings is brutal. This morning for example it is 79 degrees but the humidity is 94%. I worked out at my bootcamp class last night at 5:30pm and it was 95 degrees with a heat index of 105 but the humidity was only about 47%. It felt much better last night than it did this morning. There was also a slight breeze last night so it wasn't too bad. Believe it or not, I have gotten used to the heat. I'm originally from Illinois and when I first moved down here, I couldn't stand it but I have gotten used to it for the most part.

I hope you guys cool off soon. We have at least another month of 90+ degree heat to deal with.

I admit to being a fair-weather runner for the most part when it comes to running outside. I've run a few times in the cold but did not care for it and won't dare to do so in the humidity! When I do run outside I try to get out there before 9am which really isn't even early enough to beat major heat or humidity. I'll also run in the evening after 6pm.

I spend lots of time on the TM at the gym with my IPOD and truly do not mind it. If I lived in a place where the weather was nicer more often then I would probably spend more time outside. Oh well.

I agree - running in the humidity is the pits. I do not have a treadmill (or as you say Cathy - the dreadmill) but if I did I would use it on the humid days!

I run at 6AM and if it is too humid I come inside, put on the AC, and run around the living room. I know, sounds boring, but hey I am desperate for that run!

Good luck all! :)

Doing any traditional land workout for me in high heat / high humidity outdoor climate doesn't work, I found to my dismay last night. Because things have been so bean-soupy these past few weeks in Minnesota I've done (to death) a tremendous amount of pool work, with only one morning land workout per week (Sundays). Last night I was soooooo dreading hitting the pool for the millionth time that I went home instead, and did a Mindy Mylrea "Interval Express" and Cardio Fusion's Drill Max blasts mish-mosh with some extra weighted cardio thrown in. Even though we had the AC on in the house, because the air was so saturated and because this particular mish-mosh incorporated a LOT of plyo-thigh work, I sweat profusely and the sweat never dried, I got dizzy, woozy and nauseous and truly almost passed out by the end of DM's blast 6. I'm still nauseous, woozy and dizzy today; in fact I had to call in sick because of it.

Lesson learned.

Oh man, AJ, that sounds terrible, much worse than me. I did a 4.5ish mile jog yesterday afternoon w/ sprints in the 'omg, it's 110 degrees out here' spirit of the word sprints. So not too sprinty. Toward the end, I started to get chills and my hands started to feel numb. I don't think that was a good sign.

I live in a tropical climate and therefore, run at 5:30 in the morning, year-round. I will say however, that our humidity is tempered by lovely tradewinds, most of the time. When we do get "Kona Winds" from The Big Island, they bring gaseous fumes from the volcano that make running/breathing difficult on some days. I lived for years on the East Coast and the heat and humidity during the summer can be horrible. Just thinking about running in those conditions again, makes me nauseous ;(

I generally try to get out by 7 am, 6:30 am would be better but once it hits 9 it's getting hot out there. I live on the Texas coast and it is really humid here too. I ran 3 miles yesterday and walked one mile and I know this sounds sick but when I started running the 5th mile it actually felt cool because my sweat was like water but by the 6th mile I'd really had it. After about mile 3 it's no longer sweat it's slime....... I slept good that night though.....leigh:)
