Running check in

Hi guys! I haven't been on the forums much lately... so busy at work and I don't even want to look at a computer when I'm at home

So how much mileage are guys doing these days? I ran a 5K on sunday. Not my favorite race distance, but it's for a good cause (my neice & nephew's schools) so I run it every year. The 5K to me is like an all-out sprint for 3.1 miles. No time for pacing. That's why I like 10Ks, 1/2-mary's and longer. What I lack in speed I more than make up for in endurance. Anyway my time was 28:07, no PR but we did have a good time. And I tripped over the girl in front of me who dropped her walkman at the start! Arrgggh! Why do they let those things in races???!!!

So Bobbi - you racing fool you! I read your post in the last check in... yikes! How many races do you average during the season? I like to do 10Ks a 1/2-mary and maybe 2-3 5Ks. I just can't do 5K after 5K. But I know lots of runners who do. Gotta work on my speedwork!! You're smart for doing lots of crosstraining. I'm running 5-6 days/week and no other cardio. I'm hitting the weights 3 days. I really should do yoga regularly I think

Erica - how are you working out with your pregnancy and your routine? Are you still walking your 6 miles?

Candice - how's your treadmill/interval routine coming? Is it working for you? Have you done any miles outdoors?

Well, I hope everyone's well and enjoying the gorgeous weather. Anyone watch the Boston? One of the best run yet!!! I was surprised Ndebera got 2nd

I've got the Bay-to-Breakers 12K coming up 5/19 and a women's 5-miler in June. Then a 10K and 1/2 mary... better get out and do those intervals :)

Hi Marnie! I'm like you - no problem with endurance, but speed is not my thing. Also, when the weather is nice I tend to focus on running too much and don't cross-train enough even though I do believe that it's important. But running always seems like more fun! I missed the Boston - thought about it all weekend and forgot all about it on Monday!

I'm still checking-in for now, but I think my running days are about done until after the baby is born. I did 3 run/walks last week - 6 miles each and felt good, but was running very slow. I tried running again yesterday, but my belly started to ache and I felt like I was running in quicksand, so I gave up and went home. I think I'll try one more time when the temperature drops (we're having a heat wave!) and see how it goes. Otherwise, I'm using my spinning bike, stairstepper and lots of cardio videos for cardio and finishing up a S&H rotation for strength.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Thanks to all who gave advice last week on running during pregnancy! I ended up doing a search on the web and got lots of helpful info.

I got two runs in with my doggies last week. Both were about 2 miles of running hills followed by a 1/2 mile walk. The weather is getting really nice, so I'm going to start running longer if my knees allow for it!

Have a great week.

Hello There,
I just recently started running again after a long winter.I hate running in the winter. The streets are never cleared well and I think it must snow everyday. But for the last month I have been off and on.
I think my goal this summer is going to be 8k most days and about 2-3 days a week 13k.We will see how my knees hold me up.I did the 13.1 k tonight. After I was part of the way around I was thinking o.k I can do this...must have been the adrenaline running through the veins. And i did do it.And I feel great.
I am now trying to go to bed...but the husband is out and I can never get to sleep when he is gone. The house makes to many noises. So if i do get to bed soon I think I will go out again tomorrow morning.
Good luck everyone....Lori

Hi everyone,

This is my first time checking in! Since the winter weather here is no fun to run in, I've only just started up again. Actually I really just got hooked on running this time last year so am looking forward to my second year at it! I'm totally addicted to Cathe and working out with her makes me want to tackle all kinds of other athletics. I played hockey this past winter and loved it!
It's been a slow start this spring because winter lasted forever! I've started with a few run/walks about 5-6 miles then yesterday decided to go for the five mile straight run and aim for under 10 mins per mile. Loved the first 3 miles but got that stupid rib ache all through the last 2 miles. It was so discouraging! Do any of you ever experience an ache in your lower ribs just above your floating ribs? Mine feels like a spike in my side and it radiates and even 'clicks' and it really kills running downhill with the more vigorous bouncing. I taught myself to run through it last year and the pain seemed not as bad after a while but it never did go away and I only had a few sparadic runs where it never showed up.
Any advice would be much appreciated and valued! I love reading everyone's running check ins. You guys are all so motivating for all running styles.
Happy running, Jodi

Hi, you guys! I have been super busy too. My 13 year old is running track and playing softball and she keeps me so busy! Erica, you amaze me! Marnie, congratulations on a race well run! 5K's are my favorite distance! Everyone hang in there, Spring is upon us. She has to get the yucky stuff out of her system. I am pretty lcky to live in AZ where it's springlike most of the time, except for those long hot summer months! I know Marnie's got it good too in California!

I did the Race for the Cure last Sunday. My time was 23:42. I got two 5 milers and one upper and one lower strength training session before it was time for the next race. Saturday Morning I the Spring Cross Country Classic in 23:32. I love 5K's. Over quickly. Mel and I are doing the Cinco De Mayo 10K May 5th and then I am taking a break for several months! I am looking forward to it. I love the races but we did so many so close together that my training suffered. Melody broke her old 5k PR of 22:54 by running a 21:26! She was 3rd in her age division. Those "old" broads are tough! Next year I join the Masters and I am scared! Actually, I have decided to train hard and really try to break my PR's next year since it wasn't to be this year! The racing is a blast and really keeps me motivated. I love hanging out ith the Southern Arizona Roadrunners Club. We had a potluck breakfast Saturday. We are off to Florida to visit my husbands mom and dad to celebrate his 90th birthday and their 50th anniversary in a party on the 27th. I plan to exercise a little but only a little and to rest up my old bones! The racing ends in June but my retirement comes in May. There's a tough 8 miler in September and Mel and I are running the half marathon in December. So, I'll be training in earnest in July!

And today is the 8th anniversary since I quit smoking and took up running and all that jazz! Isn't that a hoot?

Happy trails to all of you!

Hi Bobbi,
Funny you mentioned that. I don't know the exact day in April but sometime this month is my 7 year anniversary from quitting smoking and taking up running. I had to quit because I wanted to get pregnant. Wonder why so many of us take up running as soon as we stop smoking? I, for one, just wanted to run off the excessive food that I was eating in order to stay away from the cigarettes (cheetos!) I never dreamed it would end up being an addiction, much less one that I loved! I only smoked for 9 years but I can really tell that my lungs took a beating (mostly during allergy season like now!)

Congratulations to you on your 8th anniversary of quitting!

Lisa
