Running and Losing Weight

Cathe, I have all your tapes and have and am 39 and my routine is usually to mix it up all week, from kickboxing, step, interval training and weight training. I recently purchased a treadmill and have started running. I have found that I love to run and have been doing 4 1/2 miles, in 42:00 minutes, 1 lap to wup and 1 lap to cool down and 4 running-well the weight(even though I'm not heavy)5'4" and 120lbs., has been coming off in my problem areas, my lower body and I love it. What would be a happy median, to keep losing weight in the bottom area, but not losing my muscle, as I did a lot of weight training before, but since running, have still been weight training but not 5 days a week, more like 2 or 3. Thanks for any help you can give me. :7 -Pam

Hi Pam!!
I'd like to know this too!! I'm training for
the Disney Half Marathon in January of 2005, and I
definitely don't want to lose too much muscle !!

:) Cheryl :) ;)

Hi Pam
I want to know this too. I have a pear shape, I never seem to loose my lower half unless I run Susan

It is very important to maintain weight training if you don't want to lose muscle -- specially during marathon training. I ran my STRONGEST marathon when I was doing weights 2-3 times a week (lower & upper body also). On the other hand I ran my FASTEST marathon when I was only running (70+ miles a week) and did very little weight training, mainly due to lack of time. I lost some muscle mass... but I had a really nice finish time.

Good luck to you!

Would doing the PYRAMIDS once a week ( 1 day for UB and another for LB 3 sets )maintain muscle mass if you need to run atleast 4 x week?
I'm training for a 10 K and it looks like it only allows a day for XT.
So I'm going to be cheating already with the split. Or would PH make more sense since its more endurance?

I think doing the PYRAMIDS would be enough. Ah, I love that DVD! :)
Plus, training for a10k is really not much of risk when it comes to losing muscle mass. The marathon training is the real bummer since for all those long training runs the body tends to use some muscle for fuel too, not just glycogen and fat. There is where the muscle loss happens.

I just lower my weight selection when in race season. Keeps muscle endurance and maintains fitness level. Also, I love PYRAMID!!!

I have been weight training 6 days a week followed by running 3 miles and walking 1/2 mile .. I am losing weight, but I am also watching what I eat and drink........ Rhonda:7

The weight hasn't budge as far as the scale goes but the body is looking less round. :p It's almost like running de-PUFFs really quickly?
I have a hard time figuring out how to balance this apple shaped thing I have going on. But running has been doing some really good things lately. Feel calmer, happier and the legs are looking better...the belly is looking less KEGGY.
But there has been less time to strength train! I MUST figure out how to work that in.

RE: Hi, R_A_C_H

Hi R_A_C_H,
I jog too or run, don't very fast, but I do 3 miles in 30 min.....
Anyway, since I am a morning exerciser and I do the Freestyle Training, I do my weight training first, then I go out for my run...
I don't know how much time you have, or when you exercise....... hope it all works out for ya....... Rhonda:7

p.s. I usually walk the last 1/2 mile, sometimes I run it....

RE: Hi, R_A_C_H

I tried Supersets as is last night for the first time and realized my DVD maybe defective...freezes all the time! I'm trying to get atleast some weights in but it's not the same as doing the split routines, is it? It's almost too little compared to the reps of the Pyramids and PS.
You run 10 minute miles! That's a lot faster than me...LOL. I don't even call my version jogging because it looks more like hopping and landing 1/2 inch further. I thought all I had to do was build up to running 6 miles to do a 10 K ...until they gave me the training schedule that starts off at 8.5 miles/week and peaks to over 30. I thought...they think I could run THAT?
