Running a 15K tomorrow?

I've been running about 6 miles or so about 3x a week for awhile now. I found out that there is a local 15K race going on tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not that is too much of a jump in mileage or if I should be able to successfully go the distance. I am not planning on racing it; just using it as a slightly longer workout. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Doreen

That's about 9 miles. It would be a challenge, but if you're running 6 miles 3x a week, I think you could manage. I would go slow (especially at the start), and really pay attention to your body past the 6 mile mark. If you get too sore or tired, walk. You don't want to injure yourself just to prove you can run a 15k.

I would like to know exactly what this means: "I've been running about 6 miles or so about 3x a week for awhile now"...:)....If you have done this for a couple of years then 15K (9.3 miles) would be easy.

I agree completely with Christine's advice and go slow or walk if it gets tough, as it is not worth it getting injured...and GOOD LUCK!!!

Let us know how it goes...:)

ITA with the previous posters' advice and wanted to say GOOD LUCK to you as well.

If you decide to run this race then I'll be running "with you" as I'm running a 10 mile race this morning!}(

Thank you Christine, Carole and Wendy. I have decided to run the race. I'll let you know how it goes - it's at 2 pm today. Wendy, good luck in your race this morning!

Thanks for the good luck wishes Doreen! They worked!!! I did really well. How did it go for you? I can't wait to hear about it!:)

I'm so glad you did well Wendy!
I did well too - I actually did a lot better than I thought I could do - I ended up w/1:20:00 or pretty close to it which is about 10 minutes faster than I was thinking I would be able to do, so I am one happy (extremely tired) camper right now :)

How did you do, Wendy??? Did you post a report somewhere??? Inquiring minds want to know!!

And great job to you, Doreen!! Go take a well-deserved nap! :)

Great job Doreen! You averaged about an 8:40 pace! That's AWESOME and way faster than I am! LOL Good job! :)

Great job! That's awesome!

Thanks Jess, Carole, Wendy and Dani! Doing this 15K really gave me the race bug - I want to keep training and upping the distance and hopefully complete a marathon sometime in the near future (I'm hoping for this year)!!

The only thing that was dissapointing was that in my age group (20-29) I finished 14/17 runners - almost at the bottom of the pack. But I guess I just have to be happy for my own accomplishment and just try to improve on my personal goals and not look at what other people are doing.

Don't worry too much about where you placed. I always look but remind myself not to take too much stock in it. You need to do YOUR personal best and that's it. If you happen to end up high in the ranks that's great but if not, who cares! You are just as AWESOME as the folks that came in ahead of you and don't ever think any differently!

BTW, I came in 26th out of 29 in my age group, 159th out of 211 for my gender and 546th out of 640 overall.

Thanks Wendy, you are definitely right! Wow, you were in a very big race! Mine only had 220 people in it...you had 640 - that must've been a lot of fun to run w/all the energy of all those people around.

Yeah, I've been in big races and small ones. They both have thier ups and downs. It is wild though to see the masses of people out ahead of you when you start a large race. Eventually it all thins out but at first it's pretty wild looking!:)
