Good morning runners!

Sarah...that was one touching story sbout your marathon...:)...I do hope your toes is healing up. That had to hurt, and I would agree you have a high tolerance to pain!

Tomasina...we missed you! I hope things get better and you can get back to posting soon...:)

I'll be doing TLT's Strength In Movement and a 6 mile run.

Hope you all have a good day...:)

Hi, Carole.

Hi, ladies.

Sarah-YOU ROCK! I loved your account on the Open Forums of the marathon and I also hope your toe heals well. YUCK-O!!!!!! LOL. Seriously, you did an awesome job and the one thing that I kept LOVING to hear you say was, "yes, of course I'm tired, I'm running a marathon". LOL LOVE IT! CONGRATULATIONS!

I've been battling a bad head cold since Saturday and I finally seem to be on the mend today. I don't get sick often, but this cold had me all clogged up from the neck up! LOL I haven't worked out since Saturday either, so I'm looking at it as an extended rest period. I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things tomorrow with some cardio.

Happy Tuesday!

Gayle

Sorry about the cold Gayle. Rest really is the best thing as hard as it can be to do that sometimes!! You will be back at it soon...:)

Good Morning Gayle and Carole, and all others to come. This morning I did speed interval work. I am going to be focusing on my 5K in two weeks in reducing my time. I have no set time that I want to get I just want to continue to impove on it. So today I did 40 min of speed interval work covering 4 miles total including the warm up and cool down. Wow does that take your breath away. Then I did 25 min of yoga to get my breathing a little more centered.

Carole- Have fun with your TLT workout. I have endurance for Movement but have not done it yet. Watched it twice if that counts. Maybe this would be a good one to pull out and finally do over the next two weeks.

Gayle- I'm glad your feeling better. Whatever you and Wendy have I hope it goes away soon.

Tomasina- I agree with Carole, hopefully you'll get back to posting soon. Take care

Good Morning Ladies!

Carole-Thanks so much for your kind words and willingness to share your wisdom! It really helps those of us who are ne at this!

Gayle-Oh, man! I hope you feel better super fast! Let your body rest and don't push cardio tomorrow unless you are feeling better! Stick to healthy eating and you will still be on track!

Karen-Great Job on the speed work! You are going to kick butt (again) in 2 weeks! Just remember...1 speed work session a week is all you need. More is counter productive.

Last night I had a 1 hour massage! Oh...yeah.....felt great! Today I will just try to move around more. I am meeting up with the training group and we will do a recovery run/walk for 2-3 miles...I think it will be fun!

I am so glad you all have enjoyed my account! I can't wait until the pictures are posted! I'll let you know!

Who all is racing this weekend??

I was wondering how often I should incorporte speed work. I'm following the last two weeks of Hal Hidogn's 5K Advance with a few minor changes. He has speed work only on there once a week as well. I just thought it was just his way. I had no idea that more would be counter productive. Thanks for telling me. I usually always tend to think more is better. I'm learnig with running, fast and hard may lead to injuries and slow and steady win the race. LOL

I can't wait for pictures either Sarah. I'm eagerly awaiting with everyone.

Good Morning,

Carole, You must be an early riser to start a thread before the more further east woment do! Woman, do you have no limits to your energy level!!! You're awesome!

Thomasina, I missed you too and hope you'll be able to check in more frequently. Still on track for that 1/2 in July, right?

Karen, You'll do great in your 5K. Before you know it you'll be writing your marathon story!:)

Sorry you're sick Gayle. I know what you mean about hardly ever getting sick. I can't remember the last time I had anything more than a headache. Betcha it has something to do with all the running and healthy eating. Hope you're feeling better soon and back at it full speed ahead!

Sarah, Have fun on your run tonight! It should be fun to compare marathon stories with the others who also ran The Pig. I'm also excited to see the pictures of your bad ass!

I'm still working on putting together my training plan but since I have this week done then I am OFFICIALLY training for St. George. And one of the wonderful things about that is I don't have to explain to ya'll why I'm so freaking excited!!!

Today I'll do PUB and 60 minutes on the elliptical with 200/strides min.

Hello to all who come after!!!

Good morning everyone! I was working and missed posting yesterday

Sarah- first of all I want to express my most sincere congratulations at your amazing accomplishment! You certainly have earned one first class massage! I'm sure you've had congrats coming at you constantly but I'd like to add one more. What are your marathon goals anyway? Are you aiming for a Boston qualification?

Gayle- I'm so sorry you are ill! You are doing the right thing with resting. I wish I were as wise but I'm afraid I still tend to push myself even when ill, and I should know better, I'm an RN!

Karen- you have turned into a running machine girl! I agree with Elaine that it won't be long before we'll be reading about your first marathon:D

Elaine- congratulations on entering your race. Your enthusiasm is
wonderful and contagious!!! Forgive my ignorance, but where is St. George anyway?

and Carole- a warm hello to you....You have inspired me to enter my first trail race!!!! I'm so excited, it's a 15K and it will be in the first part of June

Wishing great running to all! I did Kickmax this morning and am about to head out to one of my favorite country dirt roads for a 6-9 mile run.

ShellyC:)

Good morning all!

And it is a GOOD morning, although last night at midnight you'd never convince me I'd feel this good. I had a double whammy - allergies and horrible heartburn. For some reason, I think they were tied together. I took a decongestion tablet and both went away, and I got a good sleep (and it was a non-drowsy tablet - go figure). The good news is that I'm bloated, but I'm my low weight - so that means I must have lost some! YEAH!

Sarah - I actually loved the toe story. It shows your strength and determinations. Girl, you ARE the definition of Bad A$$!

Carole - SIM is my FAVORITE TLT! I just love the way that moves. Have fun!

Thomasina - YES!! We've missed you! Hope things get straightened out well, and you can come back and join us more often.

Gayle - hope you're feeling better! {{{HUGS}}}

Karen - you're doing so well! I love your approach to everything.

Elaine - I'm with you on trying to figure out training! It can be confusing.

Shelly - oh that run sounds like heaven! Enjoy!

Question for you smart wonderful ladies - it's kind of icky here - sunny, but the air is stagnant, and I'm a little nervous about running through a layer of what our chipper weather girl (who runs marathons, by the way, and does triathalons - the long course ones!) calls particle matter (smog and allergens). I was thinking of subbing a cardio coach indoor run on a treadmill - or should I use an elliptical? I'm going to download CC #5.

Sarah-I can't believe your toes, um, "exploded" man how does one avoid that?
And then you managed to run MILES on that? Wow, again-I bow! I hope
you're starting to feel recovered, that was a three tissue story!Lol!

Carole-How do you like to pace yourself for you numerous shorter runs
during the week?

Gayle-Hoping you're fully recovered soon as well. What a time of the
year for a head cold, ugh.

Thomasina-Glad to have you back, I missed seeing your avatar when I
checked in, it always makes me smile!

Karen-Intervals and speedwork will not only take the breath out of
you, but you will get faster. I am so impressed! Do you have a strategy
for how you want to approach each of the 3 miles in your next 5K or
only a training plan that reduces overall time?

Elaine-You can hear the happiness in your posts since the news on the
St. George, man I am so excited for you!

ShellyC-Don't you ever get tired? What do you eat for breakfast before a
workout like KM followed by a 6-9 mile run, lol!

Christine-I would opt for the inside workout, especially as your allergies
are acting up. Have fun and give your lungs a break!

Today is my rest day, but boy are my biceps on fire from GSBSB yesterday! Man, I want to race SO BADLY, but I have no time until this crazy semester gets over. Maybe, I'll just go "race" myself at the highschool track, try some of the speedwork Karen has from Hal Higdon, lol.
Have a great day to all who follow!
Mattea

Hi Everyone,

hope the day is going great for all.

Karen-- great job on the speedwork. I'm impressed you are going right into another race.

Christine -- I love your Jimmy Buffet quote. It reminds me to stretch to see the good....I sent it to my brother who has been dealing with a lot of negativity from other family members lately.

Gayle -- Sorry to hear you are sick. I like vegetarian broth with garlic when I am sick, it seems to clear my head....I hope you feel better soon. :)

Carole -- How was your 6 mile run?

Sarah -- a massage sounds great. Have fun on your recovery run. I loved your account of the marathon. It was really inspiring.

Elaine -- I can't wait to see your training plan. How does the elliptical fit into your weekly training? I read some about it in Matt Fitzgerald's book on Cross Training and am curious how it impacts your running.

Shelly C -- Kickmax + 6-9 mile run? Yikes, you are incredible.

Mattea-- I didn't know you were vegan. I'm vegan as of this past November, staring with going Dairy-free in August. I feel loads better. It's great your husband has joined you. My husband is partially vegan -- because I do most of the cooking, but he's feeling healthier lately, too.

Today is an easy day for me. Muscle Max upper body only done in push-pull kind of style, walk a few miles on the treadmill and a little Turbo Jam to get the core and low back in working order. Tomorrow is supposed to be a speed run day for me, but I am feeling a little creaky and may put it off until Thursday.

:) :) :) Barb

I just made the most amazing fried rice and now I need to stay away from it so I'm checking emails. My dh requested it. I hate to make it because it so stinking good but not anywhere on the charts as clean eating. Now I'm putting it in the fridge for him for when he gets home. When it gets cold then I don't like it as much so it wont' bother me soon. Ok enough of the Fried Rice Rant.

Elaine- I am so excited for you and this upcoming marathon. With you and Sarah, and now Shelly C running a 15k ,I can easily see a 10K in my future. If you have time to share your rotaion for a marathon I for one would love to see it. You can pm me if you like. I really take what eveyone says in this forum to heart and try and incorporate it into my lifestyle. I feel with having these 5k and life goals it's so much easier to stay the course of good heath and make me think twice about the fried rice. LOL

ShellyC- Have a great run today. I can't wait for June now for you either.

Christine- I really don't have an answer but i do know they say it's important to mix it up so on a whim I'm going to say elliptical. Not that there is any knowledge behind my answer but i thought change of pace sounds good .
Barb- I seriouly think I have the running bug. The one I'm doing in two weeks is about 10 min from my home. How's that for convient.

Hi Barb-
Yes, DH and I have been vegan since last April/May. It was a pretty easy transition for me since I had been vegetarian my entire life and was already into eating tofu, beans, lentils, soy, rice, etc. DH actually became a vegetarian with me before our marriage and then decided to go vegan with me b/c of what I reported to him out of the Eat to Live Book. Not only did DH drop a lot of weight, but he also has experienced lessened symptoms of his allergies.
What did you find the most challenging part of the transition? For me it was probably cheese honestly, since vegan cheese is okay, but just not the same so we mostly just avoid it altogether. The toppings always seem to fall off my pizza now:p
Mattea

HI Mattea,
Thanks for the additional thoughts about being vegan. I didn't realize you were vegetarian before.

I have always eaten a vegetarian-leaning diet since I was kid -- but always felt scared that I needed more protein. After Carole recommended the ETL book, I realized how much of my protein fear wasn't based in knowledge, but in emotion and that book made me become full-fledged vegan.

Probably the hardest things for me were giving up skim milk on cereal or in oatmeal and switching to soy milk and giving up egg whites -- which is something I ate to get "enough" protein.

For my husband, cheese is the hardest thing for him to do without -- so he is using much less of it. Also, he loves red meat every six weeks or so -- and he likes to have turkey bacon

Karen- you've got a good kind of bug, so hold onto it. I couldn't do a Hal Higdon advanced plan for the 1/2-marathon and cut it back to the novice plan. Now I'm using a plan from the Smart Runner program at Runner's World. The sequence of the runs work better for me than the Hal Higdon plan does for this next 4 weeks until D-Day. I started following his rotation for a 15-K and then took a break and switched to a 1/2-Marathon plan and then realized I need to find an actual race to run. (I was doing all of his plans just as training plans without committing to an actual race.)

Have a great day everyone!:) :) :)

Howdy ALL!!!

Thanks for the kind welcome backs you guys! I’ve just been been real busy with the semester end, and some family issues with in-laws. Right now I have to get to another meeting, but I wanted to say HELLO! To everyone today and take a quick peek at everyone’s day. I was able to get in a 4 mile run and some abs this morning and after my son’s track meet this evening, I have to take a final exam online, so I don’t think the LB stuff is gonna happen. I’ll get it fit in this week though! YES Elaine, I am still on for the ½. You betcha, but I just may be the slowest runner though! LOL.. Gawsh, I was on that treadmill this morning and I just could not find a groove. Must be the mental exhaustion setting in I guess, plus I haven’t slept very good for a few days. Anyway, thanks you guys and Oh, yeah, Mattea…..I’m glad you like my avatar because it is my sweetest dog ever, a golden retriever and her name is Violet. I’ll post more pics of her (someday when I have time lol) and link my picture trail…OK Off to that meeting! I’m late now I think! Oh, well it just may be the earliest I’ve ever been late! I’ll post later!! Have a good rest of the day!

Thomasina

Hi everyone,
I just want to check in real quick and say hello. I’m having meetings up the kazoo this week at work. I went to the gym this morning and did a leg workout and RAN for 3 miles, YAY! It felt so good that I wanted to keep going but I had to get home because of early morning meetings.

Gee, I think I’m gonna do a longer run tomorrow and I had ZERO discomfort later so hopefully that weird hip/glute thing is gone. I was reading up on the symptoms and it seems to be a common runner’s injury called “Piriformis Syndrome - pain in the buttock region, possibly pain in the hamstrings, occasionally pain in the back of the leg that is difficult to locate.” (whatever that means, I just know it’s a pain in the rear, lol!)

Kathy G

Hi Kathy-
Glad to hear your pain is subsiding! I don't know if you do yoga regularly, or at all, but I know I've heard Bryan Kest talk about the piriformis muscle during one of his workouts, so you may want to research some yoga stretches that work this muscle specifically.
Mattea:)

*Dances into thread on an endorphine high* Okay, maybe haven't really kicked in the endorphine's yet, but holy cow, I'm ready to keep running! I did Cardio Coach 5 - all except the last 2 sprints at the end as I needed to get back to work. I did it on a treadmill (yes, as much as I hate them), ended up running 4 miles, and I could have run a lot further. I was so enjoying the run. Why or why does work have to get in the way of life?!? :+

*Waves hello to everyone and dances back out of the thread to sent a quote to a customer*

hi all,

sounds like everyone had a nice workout today. I had bootcamp but cut out early to go get my hubbys birthday gift and cake so we could celebrate tonight.

I have a 5k on saturday.hope it doesnt rain.

for you pro's out there, my training schedule from jeff galloway calls for tapering time these next two weeks. My brother and his wife are still going to run 10-11miles this weekend ,one week away from the half. I am wondering should I be running more than 7miles that the schedule calls for . I just dont want it to hinder my run for the half may 21st. I ran 14 on sunday, but should I run maybe 10miles this weekend also or do the tapering? I dont know what to do, I am worried that I should run farther for more endurance.
talk to ya later!
