Runners Check-In, Thurs, 6.08.06

Hey sleepy heads, WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :7

It's another beautiful morning here in Minnesota and I just dread having to go to work. Speaking of work, I was wondering - what does everyone do for a living? I'm the district/superintendent's secretary at our school. I work all year long (a little more lax during the summer, though) but handle the elections, school board, etc.

I ended up taking a rest day yesterday. I was given a 'project' 10 minutes before I was going to leave for the day and that took me into 2-1/2 hours of overtime!! UGH! I was not pleased by any means, but I'll use that comp. time somwhere down the road here.

Gayle - I sent your book back yesterday, please let me know when you get it and THANKS AGAIN, it was a great read.

Today I have a 3.5 mile run and strength training.

Have a wonderful day everyone~

Just wanted to get these replies into last night's posts right now...

Thomasina: LOL...PMS...:7 :7 :7 ...very funny, lady!:p My golden is 2.5 years old and his name is Clyde. In the future we are going to get him a female companion (different breed though) and will name her Bonnie!:7

Jess: OMG I can't believe he's not a golden! So wierd! Looked exactly like one when I looked at your pics! I'll have to look again! WOW!

Now for my official post of the morning! LOL :)

Good morning Cheetahs!

Marcia, I have been running 3.5 miles for my long steady state run. I am going to try to kick it up to 4 today...care to join me? }(
Are you going to do a Cathe vid for the weight work?

I am a SAHM to my 1 year old son, Joey and my 2.5 year old Golden, Clyde. ;) Prior to leaving my job I was a Collection rep for a bank. I do lots more work now then I did then and I don't get paid a dime! Go figure! ;) LOL Seriously, I was at my last job close to 5 years when I left and spent many an hour on the internet or emailing a friend. I was BAD! I still worked but the job just didn't warrant being constantly busy. It was good and bad. Could make time DRAG but being busy in a collections dept can be BEYOND stressful so it probably kept a few gray hairs from popping out!:7

So yesterday was Muscle Max and then I got in IMAX 2 intervals 1-5 after dinner. It had been sooo long since I had done that one! Felt good!}( Today, as I told Marcia, is my long ss run at the gym...hopefully 4 miles. YIKES! Do you think it would be okay to slow my pace just a smidge as I bump up my mileage or should I push to stay at my usual pace?

Have a great day!

good morning everyone!

okay, this morning I went out and ran 3.47miles and was able to run the whole thing but at a slower pace. I told myself to slow down and see if I could finish that way. I did but going a 9:57pace is slower than I am use to not alot but anywhere between 30-45seconds slower than I usually train. It still was more challenging than usual though so I think I am still fighting this upper respiratory thing. I still have alot of drainage in my throat and ears. How do you get that stuff out of your ears. I am done with the antibiotic and am taking zyrtecD and it still is in there.

anyway sounds like everyone is starting the day out good. it feels good to have your workout done first thing in the morning!

Wendy - I don't think there's anything wrong with slowing down a bit to get your miles in. I'm not to the point where I'm worried too much about the time, I just want to make it to the end of the miles for the day. ;-)

Laura - I hope you are feeling better, sounds like you aren't quite over what ales you, huh?!?! Take care of yourself. Do you have allergies? Mine are on overdrive and I thought that might account for some of your symptoms. Hope you are feeling better soon.

~Marcia~

Laura: It sounds like a tough battle against the upper resp infection there! You can beat it though. Sounds like you are being smart about it. It will clear up. Just give it time. :)

Christine: Low and behold the night after we were discussing how much we LOATHE spiders, I had to kill the first one of the season! ARGH!x( It was a daddy long leg type....YIKES! They look super nasty with those really long legs but there isn't much to them otherwise so killing them isn't that bad. LOL

Good morning cheetah Runners. Today I'm off to do a tempo run. I was reading in one of the books I have last night about a 10-10-10-10 run. Ten warm up, ten min of climbing to your peak, 10 min at peak, and then 10 min recovery with cool down. I think I will give that a try today. Then I will do my push ups and my yoga. I'll let you know how it went when I'm done.

Marcia- I'm a SAHM who homeschools all my kids. I have three girls and one super dh. I actually will be married 10 year in July. I use to be a bakery manager and then I worked part time at the front desk of a health club.

Wendy- Go for the 4 miles. You can do it. You are doing great.

Laura- Feel better Laura. DH woke up this morning with the same cold I just got over. It is something in the air with these summer colds.

Karen...Sounds like a good run you have planned. What would your peak be, btw? I have run as fast as 7.0 so far but I don't think I could hold it for ten minutes...that would be a tough # for me to figure out....

Good morning!

Thanks for the wake up, Marcia!! My friend Melissa called & said she'd been up working past midnight & needed a little extra sleep so I went back to bed too!! I didn't get up til 6:15 so I did about 30 min of KickMax (of course, did the blasts!) instead of a 3 mile run. ;-) My body has just been sooo tired from getting up so early & then running all day w/ the kids to the pool, outside, etc. My dh asked if I was ever going to make it past 9:30 again before heading to bed!!! :p

As for what I do, I'm a SAHM to my wonderful girlis. I have been since right before Hannah was born, before that I was an office manager for a small loan company. I had worked & put my dh through college (Karen, we'll also have our 10 yr anniversary this summer in August!). So now I love being a SAHM. I have babysat on & off for friends kids & had watched a neighbor boy for about 6 mos this past year, but I'm done for now. Well... except for today I'm watching a good friend's 3 kids but just for the day! (and they're 7, 9, & 11 so it's not like it's much trouble!) My dh is a computer programmer & he loves his job. He also seems to keep getting these weekend roofing jobs to make a little extra money which is nice. He doesn't mind, he actually likes a little hard labor (he grew up out in the country).

WEll, I've gotta get ready because my friend will be here w/ her kids soon!! We're either heading to my running buddy Erin's pool up the street or to the *big* pool today, we'll see what the kids want to do! Have a good one, I probably won't be online much today!!

Hugs,

Hi, ladies.

Wendy & Laura-I say slow down when needed. Everybody does it and NEEDS it, so go ahead and log the mileage!

Karen-I will have to try that 10-10-10-10 run SOON!

Marcia-YOU'RE WELCOME! Glad you got some good use from the book!

OK.......not myself the last few days, could ya tell? I think the route of my problem, as usual, is my emotions. First, TOM was over 3 weeks LATE! ACK! I felt all bottled-up inside, bloated, etc. ICK! I knew there was NO chance of being prego, so that always makes my mind wonder and worry. Second, what would have been my and late DH's 11th anniversary is coming up on the 17th. My brain has been going all places with this one. From junior high, to hi school, to dating him, to our first baby, then our second, then his problems, then illness, then the grave. And EVERYTHING in between. It got to me. BUT...last night I prayed, and woke up early this AM and THANKED MY LUCKY STARS for my wonderful life that I have and that I'm providing to my boys! Moving on now.

2 mile hill walk on the treadmill, and that's it for today. SORE muscles from Tuesday still. I'm thinking about officially starting my marathon training Monday instead of July 1. Craving good runs these days!!!

Gayle

RE: Good morning!

marcia yes I have allergies, trees, grass, mold, dust, ragweed, you name it, I am allergic to it!

I know it will take time, it just is frustrating when you know usually a task is easy for you and now you are stuggling.

talk with everyone later, off to work I go!

RE: Good morning!

Laura: Yes, I can certainly understand the frustration! Take it out on us! That's what we are here for! :7

RE: Good morning cheetahs!

Good morning Cheetah runners

Marcia...enjoy your strength workout and run. Thanks for waking us up...:)

Wendy...I will say if you lived in Calif, I would promise to run the 5K with you....although you'd probably kick my butt...:)..I am with you on Jess's dog...I thought for sure it was a golden!! Good job on the Imax intervals after dinner..for your run today, go by how you feel, if you feel a bit tired slow down to get in the 4 miles...:)

Laura..it does take some time to get back into it after being sick. Be patient. Now that you are off the antibiotic I bet you will feel stronger in a few days. Those things can wipe you out..

Karen...PLB will always be on of my fav workouts. I have done pyramid style weightlifting a long time and gotten great results. That 10-10-10-10- run sounds interesting...have a good run.

Gayle...sorry about the TOM problems. Late is not fun and it can make your body feel worse. Those kind of anniversaries always bring the memories back don't they? If you feel like starting your training early...GO FOR IT!!

Barb!! You are ahead of like what 6 guys!!! Way to go!!!! I would get that pic of you beating those rather young looking guys...:)..That is one cool calculater..Shoulders & Arms is an experiment. You will soon figure out the right weight. I am so jealous you DH is doing it! I have so tried...

Mattea...yes the floorwork on PLB always burns out the hamstrings! Good job shaving off the minute from your course yesterday...After all our talk about pepper spray, I even ordered a new one. It's called Wildfire...sounds hot?...:)

Tomasina...I think my cheetah days have gone by so I'll be a cheetah mule with you! That is awesome about your friend, I hope you can meet up and run..:)..Yes I do confess to enabling Wendy on the jogging stroller. But you know, it'd be like a leg workout while running and she would get so fast...I get up about 5. It depends on what weight workout I am doing when I run. Anywhere from 7 to maybe 8, but as it heats up here (100's plus are common in the summer) I might run a bit earlier. Will this one work for the cheetah Jess? http://smilies.sofrayt.com/eng/shock11.gif[/img]

Jess...your Mikey is a real cutie. Kickmax is a fun one, but those blasts are killers...good job!

Christine...that is true about the half...:)..but remember, Humboldt is really beautiful and as I am not speedy (not sure what I could do a half in) it would be fun to run it together...I am excited and scared at the same time about the pacing! It'll be a great experience I am sure. BTW if you saw mountain lion footprints....they were watching..:)

Pamela...be careful running in the heat! HRM are good though to see if your HR skyrockets...thanks for the cheers.

Sherryc...Welcome...:)..normally if the course is not marked I measure with my car. I do use a GPS on long unmarked trail runs. I run about a 9:30 or 10:00 pace these days. So for 5 miles that would be 50 min or under for me..

Cathy...strangest animal....well....bears are sure the scariest. I see mountain lion tracks ALL the time but never the animal (thank god), the usual snakes, lizards, deer, coyote, foxes, wild turkeys. The last few months though on sunday long runs with my sister and friend we seem to pick up dogs...normally find the owners after they have run quite a ways with us...I know dogs like me...:)..Imax2 does have tricky choreography...trust me, you will eventually get it...

Let me know if this link works....these are the pics of most of the animals I have had...and you have already seen Sadie...:)

Marcia...I have been self employed as a manicurist or nail tech for the last 16 years, before that I was in banking for 11 years.

I am doing my own leg exercises, a 6 mile interval run and maybe some Yoga...Have a great day

RE: Good morning!

Marcia-It's terrible that you got dumped on like that! Work cutting into your running time, tsk, tsk:) I teach college here in upstate NY and am about a year away from finishing my PhD in English Lit. It gives me a nice flexible schedule for exercising, lol.

Wendy-Hope the 4 miler goes great! I'm constantly inspired by the moms on these boards who consistently find the time to workout I'm always exhausted after babysitting! Great workout yesterday (Imax 2 is my f-a-v-o-r-i-t-e!) You should absolutely maintain a pace that is comfortable for your long run. Especially since yesterday was pretty intense.

Laura-Sorry you're still battling all that fluid. You might try something like sudafed, which usually dries out my sinuses and ears, but maybe Shelly will have a better suggestion as a nurse. Just keep listening to your body and I'm sure you'll be as good as new soon.

Karen-That sounds like a great tempo w/o, which book did that come out of? Nice and simple, and you only really have to look at the watch 4 times:)

Gayle-Big cyber hugs! What an extremely tough time you've been having, just know we're here if you need us, and so is running}( I can't wait to see you kick in up for this marathon! And I do know what you mean about sore from Tues. Cathe's BBW? One legged wall squats, 'nough said!

Jess-Will you take me to the pool too? I'll take a pb&j and some soy milk for lunch...;-) Seriously, it sounds like such a fun day and I wish I could come with you! And I know I said this before, but your girls are such CUTIES!

Thomasina!-Thanks for the hill encouragement, knowing that I've helped just one person tackle a hill is reward enough for my own pain...}( Thanks again for the book offer, I'll PM you with my address. And there's just as much to be said for those who can run fast as for those who can keep running!

Christine-Again, there's a lot to be said for natural talent, there's only so much a voice teacher can do. WTG for DD! I just read that it would take 10 days of COMPLETE rest for you to lose any fitness gains, so you shouldn't be at all worried about taking it lighter this week. Your muscles will heal, become stronger and take you farther and faster.

Pamela-Got to beat that heat! How did the intro with Mr. YP go?

Sherry-Pace is really such an individual thing, and depending on the day and course I'm running I can cover a big variety of distances in those times. One of the easiest ways to know how far you've run is a pedometer, but you can always drive your course and measure it in the car. Or if you run on the road usatf.com allows you to plot a course and measure it.

Cathy-Don't you love it when Cathe makes you stronger and faster}( Do NOT give up on Imax 2, you need to learn a step workout before you can really decide. Try adding on one or two intervals each time (before or after your "real" workout for the day) until you've learned the choreography, and before you know it, you might just start to like Imax 2 a little bit.

Barb-I think that the mental is so much harder for me than the physical. There is still a part of me that is the girl in gym class who couldn't even run a mile on the track. I hear you and Carole and Christine talking about P90X, can you give me the gist of what makes them so different from Cathe? I also wanted to add that I'd love to be able to do a pull-up soon, I can already to multiple chin-ups, but can only move a few inches on pull-ups, lol!

Carole-I've been checking local gunshops for pepper spray! Although DH is starting to feel totally better and so I have a little buffer time on needing to get it. I think GS and PLB floorwork are tied as the toughest in my mind, each one has some real burners. All the one legged work in GS! Sounds like a very tough w/o today.

Oh, and RE all the wildlife postings in yesterday's thread, my mom just saw a bear walking up their driveway yesterday evening, where I had just been a couple of days before. And while running the trails behind my parent's house, DH and I saw a bear last summer. Needless to say, we took it inside for the rest of the workout, lol
Today will be GS BSB + pushups, Cathe's BBW with GS floorwork, and a 3 mile powerwalk later this afternoon.
Have a great day!
Mattea

RE: Good morning cheetahs!

Ok, I'm done the run. It turned out to be a 10-10-10-10 + 5. I began the warmup as usual for 5 min and then went to speed 5, 5.5, 5.7, 6, 6.3 for the other 5 min. That is the first 10 . Then I went to speed 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8 6.9 for 2 min a piece. That is the second 10. Then the thrid ten was speed 7.0, for 4 min, 7.5 for 4 min and the 8.0 for 2 min. The last 10 was 7.0 for 1 min, 6.8 down to 6.0 for 1 min. Then I took the extra five min for cool down. All total it was 45 min and 4.5 milse. I really like it. It was different and it was nice to have it broken down into 4 parts so when the third 10 min was up I knew it was smooth sailing. It burned 720 calories according to my treadmill.

Carole- Enjoy your interval run today and your leg workout. My legs had some good doms in the hamstrings today from PLB yesterday. I know there from the deadlifts. Somtimes I can't get them as effective as I want but yesterday I felt my form was right on and could feel the burn. Well, it's sore today so I think my form was correct.

Mattea- Sounds like a great workout you got planned. Your right, I loved looking at the clock 4 times.

Shelly C- Have fun at the bbq and kayaking. I'm so jealous. It's raining here. Just forget it. I'm coming over kids and all.

RE: Good morning cheetahs!

Good morning all! Meant to get up much earlier and fit in a workout but slept late x( then I have a meeting x( THEN I get to workout:) Will Probably go for muscle max and an hours worth on the eliptical. No running today:7 Plan on going for a nice long one tomorrow.

Marcia- I am the night charge RN of the ICU units at our local hospital. I've been an ICU RN for about 25 yrs. Running is a great stress reliever for me!

Wendy- You are progressing in your running well! Also very intelligently,. A great strategy when increasing your distance is to start a little more slowly then what you are used to and then, if your feeling well in the second half, kick it up and go for it :)
I dont live in NJ but I visit there every year to see my DH's family.
This year in fact I will be running a race in Lavalette (Long Beach Island) on June 24th, the Save Barnegat Bay 8K.

Karen- what you described is a classic tempo run (According to Hal Higdon anyway) I'm reading his marathon training book, it's really an eye opener for me.

Barb- Your race photos are great! Thanks for sharing them. Thank you also for sharing the info about the adjusted pace calculator for age. That was fascinating! I plugged in my best Half Marathon time and it said it was equivalent to running it in 1:38 if I was 25...:7
Your friend who's a PedsICU RN must be really special. I've strictly worked with adults and only floated to Peds when forced to. It takes a real special type of person.

Elaine- so nice to hear from you yesterday..I hope your work schedule lightens for you some!

Hi Mattea- You sound like you're one tough hill runner  , and the tough core premix after? You go girl!

Pamela- I used to live in S. Fla and I remember the humidity well!
I tried to get into running there but made the foolish attempt to go out at midday  needless to say I never got into it there!

Laura- I'm glad to see your are moderating a bit. It definitely sounds like this upper respiratory infection has drained you! REST!!

Gayle- "I'm craving good runs" Now that sounds like our Gayle!!
It will be good also to focus on the training for the MCM :7

Jess- It's funny what you said about going to bed so early! You'd never know I work nights. I'm usually pooped out by 9pm! great pics!!

Well, time to shove off- Later this afternoon I'm meeting with some friends for kayaking and a BBQ :7

RE: Good morning cheetahs!

Thomasina- I have a special message for you! Your describing yourself as a mule had me smiling! You have unknowingly given yourself quite a complement as a runner! Horse riding is HUGE here in Arizona. They have endurance races for horses here (like marathons for humans). Most horses race okay at short distances but don't perform well going long. The exceptions are Arabians, Mustangs (as in the movie "Hidalgo") and...you guessed it...MULES!
My good friend loves mules and enters hers in endurance races alot.
Every October here they combine humans and horses in a "Man against
Horse" race. My friend has talked me into entering so I will be literally racing against a mule! How many of you cheetahs can say you've done that? The race is 25 miles long  If you are in doubt about the outcome I will let you know now....Maddie the mule is going to kick my butt! But I'll have a great time getting beat!

So if you are indeed a "mule" then hold your head high! You have strength and endurance!!

RE: Good morning!

Ah ha moment!!!!!!!!!

Ya know - I've been trying desparately for years to change my body and get my "fit, but fat" body to a trim, lean, exercising machine. Well, after getting stressed out at work last night, working overtime and not getting my run in, which got me off track in on my training schedule - I came to the conclusion........ What if -just- what if I actually completed the training schedule "as is". Maybe then I would see the changes that I want????? I ALWAYS let 'life' get in the way of my goals and therefore NEVER complete a rotation or a training schedule as written. Now I know, leave room for some adjusting, but I adjust and then get stressed out and stop - saying what the heck I'll ALWAYS be this way. Well - no more.........! I here and now am stating loud and clear - I WILL FINISH MY TRAINING SCHEDULE AS WRITTEN (even the strength work ;-) ) AND WILL GIVE IT A REAL 100% TRY SO I CAN ACTUALLY SEE WHAT MY BODY CAN DO AND HOW WONDERFUL I'M HOPING IT WILL CHANGE. :)

Thanks for listening - just had to get that off my chest.
