Runners Check In May 29 Monday

hello everyone,

I didnt end up doing the 5k today because I was very dizzy and felt sick to my stomach lastnight. I feel a little better this morning but can tell my body is weak. I cant stand the fact that I couldnt run today. I even watched the clock and was thinking that my brother and SIL are running right now. But with as hot as it is and the way I feel, I didnt want to chance it. I hope I am recovered for next sundays race. I am already registered for that one. I went for a walk this morning and did jiggle free arms, but again had to drop down in wt,being weaker and all.

I think it was gayle who said she had a garmin. Is it the 301? does it come with virtual trainer? I thought that one did but on the web sites it doesnt state that it comes with it. Walmart has the 301 for 158.00 I think I am going to get it.

talk with everyone later

Laura--
You did the right thing listening to your body. That is as big of an accomplishment as finishing a race at any time. Hang in there! You will feel better soon.

:) :) :)

Barb - you snuck in there without me really seeing you! Sorry! I like Tae Bo - it got me really started into video exercise really, but after a while it drives me crazy. Billy gets to talking and forgets what he's doing so there's usually one side that gets worked more than the other. But, I do like his older Advanced Live and Get Ripped series - only available on VHS, unfortunately. His newer stuff bores me. They're very intermediate level and great if you want a workout, but need to take it easier. But I really don't like the band workouts at all. I've heard his new "Favorite moves" is a blast, but I haven't done it.

Laura - sorry you missed a 5k due to illness. How aggravating! But, I agree with Barb - you did the right thing. Walmart has the 301 for $158? I really want the new one that has the more powerful signal because I hike under trees a lot. That's still $200+ though...

Well I did everything I said I was going to. Found out Ab Ripper is actually kind of easy if you START with it! I knew if I waited to the end it would never get done. Did a 6.8 mile run, and I have to admit it was really tough. I'm thinking it's because I'm still bloated, so I'm running with about 5 extra pounds, and I'm just getting back to normal. I also changed my route so that it included more hills. Man I hope that's it, because it's only 1/2 the distance I'm supposed to run! We'll see next weekend when I run it again and try for the full 7.2 miles. Oddly doing the Chest, Shoulders and Triceps helped stretch me out and get the "Holy Cow I can't MOVE!" feeling out of my legs. I'm feeling pretty good right now - and burned major calories. So maybe there's hope...

Hi Cheetahs!

Hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day. Went for a 7 mile slow run today (I think it was more like 7.5 or 8 -- my pedometer has to be wrong because it took forever!). Boy was it hot! The thing I've dreaded finally happened. I generally don't run on the sidewalk, but it was so hot I decided to take advantage of its shade. Somewhere around mile 6 a song I really enjoy came on, and I was in my own world. One minute I was relishing the shade and a light breeze (there were precious few breezes on this run), the next minute I was sprawled face down on the concrete. Of course this would happen when several cars were around. :p I didn't hurt myself, but due to the abrupt stop my hamstrings started to cramp a little. A lady stopped her car to check on me so at least I know if I do hurt myself my neighbors will help :) To be honest, I think I may have closed my eyes for a second because I was so happy for the breeze. All in all it was a good run, but I didn't get to P90X chest and back. 2 hours in the hot sun wiped me out, and I have a million things to do before my family arrives in an hour.

I'll touch base later with individual greetings. Take care everyone!

Pamela

barb your right!

christine, yeah walmart has the 301 for 158.00,they also have the 305, is that the one you want? do you have the 301? I just want to make sure it works properly in a wooded area. I thought gayle said she had one and loves it.

carole, it is 90+here today. I will have to start getting up and doing all my runs in the early morning. Good thing , I dont do any 20milers like you. how long does it take you to run that long?

I think someone was asking our ages. I am 36 soon to be 37 come august. I am from fremont, ohio. been running 2yrs and love it!

hope everyone is having a good holiday!!

Pam - so sorry to hear about your tumble! That's sooo embarrassing. I'm just really happy you weren't hurt.

Laura - I think it's the Garmin 204 - I have to double check. Some one somewhere (another forum maybe?) said they had the Garmin, but didn't like it because it didn't get signal in the woods. I've used Garmin GPS systems and I have noticed that, too, so I can believe it. That's why I was so interesting when the new one - it's a 200 series - came out because it's supposed to have a stronger signal and get coverage even in the woods. So, when in August - I'm an August birthday, too!

Christine--thanks for the Taebo info. I had the old videos back in 1993ish? and liked them, but then moved on. I've been curious about the new ones. I like TurboJam -- I've tried the advanced ones and find them kind of a nice break from the familiar. Good job completing your run and the big calorie burn is a most excellenet reward. Who knows why some runs are like that , i.e. really, really hard? There are so many factors, it can be maddening to try to figure it out. I know for me one hidden culprit is not having eaten enough carbs at the right time before a run -- or the 24 hours before -- and ditto on water/salt hydration needs.

Pamela--I'm so sorry about your fall -- but it's kind of amazing that with the fall, you are totally looking at the up side of your run. I love it when a good song comes on and I am lost in my world of music and running. It is so good for the soul!

I had the Garmin 201 or something like that -- in the 200s and it definitely konked out with trees. I recently got the Polar RS200 --it has a footpod to calibrate mileage, not GPS and it's $199. I think the drawback is that you need to calibrate it on the type of surface you run on -- so mine is calibrated to asphalt. If you calibrate it to a trail, you would have to reset it for a different surface -- but I definitely like mine. I have read good reviews, though, of the super expensive Garmins -- maybe they are worth it. Think about the price divvied up over 365 days. (Am I an enabler or what?)

It is so hot in Michigan right now -- high 80s and humid and pollen to beat the band. Very annoying......You west coasters are lucky gals!

205 maybe? that one doesnt have the heart rate monitor but it has the virtual trainer. I want one with both. so I dont know which one to get because I think the 301 doesnt come with the virtual trainer. Hopefully if anyone has one they will give us some advice!

I was lurking and wanted to let you know that I have the forerunner 301 and it has both the virtual partner and a heart rate monitor.

OK, my answers to Cathy's questions!

My weekly workout changes depending on what I'm training for (5K or more, speedwork, etc).

Generally I run 4 days a week, I like to run every other day so it isn't so hard on my body. (I used to run 6 days a week but have had to make myself cut back!) I just got KickMax so I'm doing that on off days, biking, or TaeBo Bootcamp w/ the Billy bands. (someone was asking about TaeBo, I like the Bootcamp series- my neighbor gave me the whole set because she didn't like it!).

I am new to Cathe's workouts, so for right now I'm doing Muscle Max, Pyramid Upper & Lower body workouts plus I do Pilates nearly daily (love Pilates for gentle toning & stretching!!!). I also do pushups at least 5 days a week & am back to doing chinups again (we have a chin up bar in the garage so I slack off in the winter when it's cold! ;-) ).

I generally try to take 1 rest day a week (typically Sunday) but sometimes I bike or get something in anyway. :p

I'm from IL & I'm 29 yrs old.

Hugs,

I have the Garmin 201- I got it last August from my dh for an anniversary present (and yes, I was happy with that for a gift!! ;-) ) I don't have any troubles w/ signals but I mainly run out in open areas (around cornfields!).

Oh, and I forgot to post about my screen name. Kind of a silly story, but first of all I got the nickname Jugs because of my big boobs!! LOL And, I nursed all of my dd's exclusively & my dh used to joke about the kids drinking straight from the *jug*. It's kind of become a nickname & as I started posting on boards & forums it just kind of stuck as my nickname!! LOL

And now that I've lost so much weight I've gone from a 40DD+ to about a 34C but since I've shrunk all over I still look like I have bigger jugs. LOL

Anyway, that's the story!!

Hugs,

Jess_jugs

Hi Karin,
Thanks for the Garmin info. What have you been up to? If I'm remembering right you live in Colorado maybe and are lucky to see mountains everyday. I would love to live in Colo.

Back to something you posted ages ago: I actually caved and bought bumble and bumble products and Like them.

Hi Barb! No problem about the Garmin info. I really love mine. Actually it was a rude awakening when I got it because I was going slower than I thought x( . At least I am kept honest with it.

I did a 10K today, but felt weird posting about it here since I just lurk! Since you asked though, here is the link that I posted about the 10K.

I bought the B&B shampoo and conditioner. I love it. Glad you do too!!!

Hi Karin,
That's just awesome about your race. It looks huge! Way to go!!

That must have taken huge courage to do a first race that is so big?

Good for you for doing better than you though timewise and more important, it's great you had fun.

(I think lurking is similar to posting -- it's just you don't write anything and feel involved from a different seat in the house. It took me a long time to post anything on any boards.)

My second race of my life is next Sunday. Sarah's marathon experience really motivated me to just step up to the plate and post. For me, part of the challenge of running is feeling like there's a place for novice me in the world of runners.

I know what you mean, though, about staying honest through using some kind of mileage/speed tool. Isn't that the truth? for me, my own tiredness or perceived exertion isn't the whole story and these technology tools have really helped me find a way to improve.....

....and my hair is looking good these days, so it all works out!!!!!

Hi again,

Wendy, I hope you enjoyed your getaway, and don't feel bad about the eating. We all have those weekends, and look -- you were right back at the gym today. :)

Christine and Barb, thanks :), I was more embarassed than hurt (really embarassed! It was right across the street from the big park, a guy was walking his dog, a woman was walking, another was jogging, you get the picture. :+ )

Laura, I hope you feel better soon!

Elaine, I must have missed your post race report. I hope you had fun! Hmmm, I don't think I was on yesterday (or at least I don't remember being on) so I'm going to have to check that thread out.

Carole, you never cease to amaze!

Hi Karen, Mattea, Sarah, Judy, Shelly, Jess (I kinda figured that's what your screen name meant after I looked at your pics. :) That nickname would fit me too. :p Your pics are beautiful by the way -- what a gorgeous family you have! You and so many ladies here are inspiration for me.), Cathy (welcome!), Marcia, Kristi, juststartingout, any other Cheetahs that may have slipped my recently jostled mind :).

Almost forgot, I'm 36, and I live in South Florida. My screen name is my name and the numbers randomly assigned to me by aol 10 years ago. I haven't had aol since 1999, but I still use the numbers.

Have a great evening everyone!

ETA Great job on your 10K Karin! Wow, what a beautiful location! We have no mountains, hills, nor snow here, so those types of shots are breathtaking for me. (Don't get me wrong, I love my weather, flat landscape, palm trees, and beaches, but I really appreciate the beauty of places with seasons and scenery.)

thanks karin! have you had any trouble with it? I was told the 301 and the 305 are new and better than the 201 and 205. I just wanted to do the homework before I buy one . i boughta heart rate monitor a few months ago and dont really like it. I tried to return it just past 30 and I couldnt, so I dont want to waste money on another gadget that wont work for me.

the 301 at walmart doesnt state that it comes with virtual trainer. it says the 205 does though.
great job on your 10K Karin!

Hi Laura. Personally, I haven't had any problems with my Forerunner 301. My friend also has one and she hasn't had any problems with it either. I don't run in areas where it is hard to get GPS signal though so I can't really say anything about how strong the signal is. I don't really know anything about the 205 and 305 models, but I think (I could be wrong) that the difference between 201 and 301 is that 301 has the heart rate monitor. Actually there is a table on this link (you have to scroll down a little) that compares the models.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...f=pd_bbs_1/002-9541265-2364852?_encoding=UTF8

I know what you mean about getting gadgets and then not liking them or having them not work. You might want to check the return policies of amazon or other places you are thinking of getting it from. I do know that REI has a great return policy, but they are selling it for $199.99.

Good luck,

Karin

Hi Ladies!

Sorry, no time for personals but I did read the thread! Thanks for not letting me get down about my eating this weekend!:)

I did my ITread 40 min work out at the gym today but I kept w/the speeds that were in the work out for a jogger. She begins the WARM-UP at the pace that I normally do a steady-state run at , 5.5, so I knew this would be a real challenge for me! I warmed up on my own with fast walking for about 5 mins and then went for it. Well...I made through about 25 mins of it before I just couldn't take it any more! LOL I tried to bring it down a bit once to rest and the punch it back up but I just couldn't...I was done and I knew it. I didn't try to force it. I turned off the work out and cooled down. I was proud of how much I did considering how fast she had me going compared to my "usual"! I think my mileage was like 4.5 but that was including w/u and c/d. I forgot to break it down today to see how far I actually ran...

Tomorrow my intention is for a circuit work out at home and hopefully it will be an early one. It was *HOT* here today...we got all of the a/c units in today but the one in my w/o room ;( and I REFUSE to suffer heat stroke for a work out. LOL If I get up too late or just find it's plain ol' too warm, I'll go to the gym and do something else...OR just do a weight work out w/no cardio. We'll see!

Have a great night ladies!
