Runners Check In April 7

I was thinking my little guy might be coming down w/a cold cause he's been snottier than usual ;) and then this morning I went up to find his top lip covered in nasty gooey yellow stuff! EEEEEWWWWW! Sooo...this means no run today b/c no gym today. :-( Don't want to bring him to the gym daycare like that..it's not right. This is the first time he is sick though EVER!!! Ofcourse, I knew it was coming once I started leaving him in the gym daycare! x( AAAaaaahhh well...can't protect them from everything all of the time, right? ;)

So anywhooo, he just went down for a nap...early one today...so I will tackle a Cathe cardio in a few minutes in lieu of the run. Maybe tomorrow daddy can watch the little guy so I can sneak out to the gym in the morning for that run but who knows...we'll have to see.

Oh, and I did MM for the first time this morning! GREAT work out!!!:+

Welcome Shelley! I hope your run is pain-free!:+

Edited for typos!

sarah 18 miles wow!! I will be running 11-12miles on sunday working my way up to 15 which will my farthest yet. this time for my half I am over distancing my miles. sarah, I had posted my response about the dayton half on I think april 3rd check in. but anyway dayton had been the best half I have done so far. the cleveland half didnt compare. not the route itself but everything else. dayton just made you feel like you really acomplished something spectacular. The refreshements afterwards, the pasta dinner before hand, the shirts and madallion(spelling ?) clevelands didnt compare to daytons. but cleveland is much closer for me. Next weekend is my first to do the huron lighthouse half, so I am excited to do a different one.

Carole, I a like you, I prefer to run outside. I am waiting a little today since it looks like it might clear up and the air seems perfect today. I am glad to be able to come to a forum like this and learn from you pros. I have learned alot about the sport and hope to learn alot more.

Good Morning Runners!
Sorry that Joey has his first cold Wendy:-( That's terrible, but just think how strong his immune system is that it's taken him this long:D Don't worry about subbing a Cathe video, you wouldn't want her to get lonely with all the running and spinning you've been doing, now would ya?
It sounds like everyone is having great runs today, outside and inside:D
Kristi, this thread on long run hydration actually started this runner's check in, hopefully you'll find a good option for your runs here:

Here, here! I second Sarah's glee:7 Shelley's here. I've been thinking about your hip problems, but was remembering how you were steadily building your mileage (actually your first 8 miler inspired me to run mine) and so I'm glad you're giving it another go. Here's to pain free!

Great luck on the LOOONNNGGG run Sarah, I know you'll kick it through the whole thing and have some great advice for us on the other side.
I did Imax 2 this morning and then outside in the light spring rain for a 30 min. steady state run. Imax 2 definitely felt easier this morning than it has in a long time, what a great feeling.
I'm going to buy some body slide friction reducing stick today, as my clothes get sweatier with the warmer weather I'm finding I need it on even shorter runs.
:p

Hello to all of runers!
Sarah- best of luck to you in the18 mile run! you are so inspiring, with your very positive posts!
I ran 6 miles at 7:00am this mroning with an old friend who is a new running buddy! The rain started shorty after we finished! My left calf is tight, and so is my right groin. I did 30" of Finn yoga for Happiness right after I drove home . And I will do more extra calf stretching throughout the day.

Good (late) morning, Runners!!! I'm so excited to see and hear all of you!!

Sarah- HAVE FUN on your 18 miles!!! That's the longest run I ever got to with my bum leg... so far, at least! }( 18 was just super fun and super zen for me. I hope you have a great run!

Carole- yes, we are all prunes here in CA. x( x( x( x( x( I did not move to Seattle and miss it, somehow, did I?? Sometimes I feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, as if my entire community whirled up and landed in some rainy place-- because THIS IS NOT CALIFORNIA!

For me, today was to be a non-run day so I could rest up for the super muddy 10k trail run tomorrow morning. However, we did some running in boot camp and I go with them, so there went that plan! :p I'll get some yoga in probably later this afternoon, so we'll just see how it goes. The trails are totally unpredictable in weather like this, so I know I'm not going to do as well as I did a few years ago. Oh well!

FYI, the run we had the boot campers do is a lot of fun. We jog over to the main street in the city, and then they do exercises at EACH corner and jog over to the next corner and repeat. Today, it was 20 backward lunges with each leg, followed by 20 triceps dips at the planter boxes. On the way back, they did side lunges at each corner and pushups against the planter boxes. It's a fun way to do a workout!

Happy day, everyone!! :)

Good Morning running women! GREAT running posts today! As usual, thanks for sharing; it's so inspiring to hear all of your accomplishments.

Got my UPS delivery yesterday, so I did my first Pyramid LB workout this am. WOAH! Talk about some burnin' in the buns! I especially love the little stability ball section! I also did some abs and plan on some cardio when I get home. Of course I'd love to do another RUN, but I have to be careful with my hip and limit the running, so I'll probaby go with MIC or something.

Sarah - GOOD LUCK with your 18 miles; how exciting! And I know for sure you will do just fine!! You're in excellent shape and since your will is strong for this goal you'll get the 18 done no problem! Then you'll sail through the 20 easy - piece o' cake! (Er..should I say piece o' rice cake!):9

Carole - Thanks for the vegan cheese and website tips, and the vegan planet book recommendation, it does help! Yes, the Way to Cool does cover some of the Western States and over through Cool on the "Barbara Shoner Trail". I have run there many times and that's where I'm most freaked out by the cougars (mountain lions). I never have gone out alone though!! I've only seen one once and talk about feeling terrified! It a was way in the back trails by a marshy area behind Winchester in Meadow Vista. We saw the prints and then heard the rustling in the marshes bushes whatever they are. Damn, then we saw a glimpse of it and I tell you...We just walked as fast as we could (did not want to be running from the cat) and talked very loud with our hands over our heads. Needless to say, I was very spooked on trails from then on. Be careful out on the trails! Whew! here I am again, long winded. SOrry !

Everybody! - Great job and please keep coming to this thread cuz I love reading about everybody's running/workout days etc. Good advice too!

Run on folks!

Thomasina :D

So a question for the veteran runners...if a person's running schedule is as follows...

M-
T- run
W-
TH- run
F-
S- run
S- run

how best would you plug in other workouts...specifically cross trianing and weights? should I be doing circuit type workouts which combines both (such as the HIgh step workouts or circuitmax) or should I do 3 day splits with extra cardio, full day weights, what? Assuming that weight loss and being able to eventually run a half mary in the fall are my goals.....Darn it! I have all of Cathe's videos and now I have TOO much selection! I can't decide!

HELP

Hi...i am new here...but since all of you are runners as myself i have a question.

I have been running 20plus years....i am 44 and need to lose 10 lbs. Yes, believe it or not 10 lbs and I run everyday!!

I run about 8 miles a day....this is in about 63 minutes. Yes, everyday. I do some weight lifting...but not serious about it. I don't know if it is just getting older and i need to change things..or what. I do interval running a few times a week also...but still maintain the 7 or 8 miles a day routine.

I am completely desperate right now and totally depressed. SO of course all i want to do is eat sugar!! I have 3 children..twin boys age 6 and my daughter is 9. I try not to buy to much junk..because i end up eating it. Anyway. Any suggestions, tips whatever would help.

Sorry i just feel really down today...i workout so hard each day and still feel way too "squishy"!!!

Thanks.

Judy

RE: HELP

I have plenty of my own questions so I don't know if I'm the right person to address your concerns but my first suggestion is to add more serious weight lifting to your routine. Lifting weights and building muscle should take care of the "squishy" issue.

RE: HELP

Thank you for your response. I did order cathe's upper/lower pyramid and legs/glutes....any other good ones you know of. It is really my belly and waist that are my biggest problem areas. As most of us, i am sure.

RE: HELP

JudyTom, Welcome to the check-in. You have to stop eating the sugar, plain and simple. Otherwise, the squishy feeling is here to stay. Don't want to sound harsh and unsympathetic, but you have to choose...hard or squishy? Leave the sweets to special occassion treats. This will also help rid you of that depression. Get out of the evil cycle of not being happy with your body and then trying to medicate your disgust with the very poison that causes your body to be less than what you want it to be. Easier said than done...right? It's not easy for any of us...at first. Practice makes perfect (almost anyways) and the more you decline the junk food, the easier it gets. Your kids don't need that crap either. Don't buy it.

RE: HELP

Thank you for being honest...you did not sound harsh. i guess i know that is what it is but i just don't know how to begin "eating clean"! I guess i will just start with the sweets and take it from there. I really wanted to do a 1/2 marathon in the fall and want to feel good for it. Thank you for responding....you look incredible!

RE: HELP

Small changes, sweetie! Small changes! If you turn it all upside down over night, there is no way you'll stick to it. Pick 2-3 changes and once you are comfortable with them and they are second nature, make a few more changes. If 2-3 feels too challenging, than drop one and do 1-2 changes. The goal is healthy changes that will stick for life...not healthy changes that will stick until you reach your goal. You can do it...and you WILL!!

So tell us...what changes are you going to make first? Nothing too drastic!

I'm so sorry! I forgot to welcome Missy into the running check-in in my earlier post.
That is, of course, after she manages to drag her lucky butt back from "vaca":p

Amy,
Nice circuit workout you made your "troops" go through this morning. How far is it between each corner where you stop and perform different exercises?
I'm wishing you luck again, especially on the muddy trails. Then again, if you fall and start sliding it might be kind of fun:+
Mattea

Cbelle,
I have a few suggestions, but they would be very general as I don't know exactly what you mean by "run". Are we talking 30 minutes or 8 miles? Intervals? Hills? Knowing this will help us to know what might work best to add in.
I know what you mean about the mulitiplicity of selections, sometimes I could have been halfway through the workout already if I could have just made up my mind!

RE: HELP

you are right...small. But i want to feel better overnight...i guess that is the problem. I am going to START TOMORROW!!! NO SUGAR...as in candy and white pasta. To be honest...otherwise i think i eat pretty well. lots of veggies. The other change will be lots more fruit. I do need to find a recipe for some smoothies..i have some chocolate whey protein powder i bought awhile back...with good intenions....and have never used it. So I am going to really try hard and I WILL DO IT!!

Reading this website also helps too!

Thank you so much.

4 easy (OK, hilly) miles. Maybe do some yoga, I haven't been taking adequate time to stretch. Getting that "shin splint" feeling.

Somebody asked about carrying water. I never have, but many do. If I'm going for a longer run (i.e. over 8 miles, which is pretty rare for me these days), or if it's extraordinarily hot, I make sure that I plan a route that has easy access to water, whether that be through a park with water fountains, by my sister's house where I have the garage code and can get in at any time, or even have water in the car where I can run by. I don't like to run and carry things; it's a personal preference. I also have found that since training for a marathon, that I really don't drink much water in the first hour of running. I'm always well-hydrated beforehand though.

BTW, my legs are really shaping up since exercising the Cathe way, and adding in weights. I think they look better than they ever have!
