Runners check in April 4th

Today is actually my rest day, (I like to take Tuesday's off b/c it's my busiest day), but the weather is actually much nicer than they said it was going to be and since I took day off on Sat. (the day after my 10 miler, DH and I hiked for 11 miles on Sat. instead) I may try to squeeze in at least 30 minutes of running this pm. Maybe I can convince DH to come to the local track with me and we can get an idea of my 3 and 1 mile times. I'm really itching to see exactly what I need to do for training for the 5k's coming up.
High fives to everyone who's been up and logging miles already today, pouring rain, treadmill, or fine spring weather notwithstanding.
Sarah, your run later sounds BEAUTIFUL, something like that to look forward to would definitely get me outdoors after work today:)
Welcome to everyone who's joining in! I am so excited about this thread, it makes me smile everytime I've logged on so far.
Did everyone see Amy B's post about completing her half marathon with her friends in the "Ask Cathe" forum? Okay, maybe that will make me get off my butt later, lol

Diane...thanks for the program. I may try this starting at week 6. I can run for 30 minutes straight but I usually do it on a speed of 4.5. I have really short legs anyway, so doing anything higher than 6.5 and I look like a cartoon!

I'm thinking I need to get back into steady-state even paced running to see if I can overcome my side stitch problems.

Thanks again and I'll report back on progress on Thursday.

Hello Ladies!

Thought I'd go ahead and check-in here as well...

I've been running for quite a while now and am currently training for a half-marathon that takes place the first week of June.

I have probably run about 4-5 half-marathons thus far. I am supposed to be following a training plan, but have really been doing my own thing for the most part. I just try to make sure I include a some speed, hill, tempo and/or long runs each week.

This morning I ran a little over 5-miles. It was a nice run on my treadmill and I played around with the speed on each mile.

To everyone beginner or advanced....I never dreamed that I could run 3-miles, let alone 13.1 miles...EVER! I used to hate running, now I don't think I could function without it...so meditating to me.

IF YOU BELIEVE IT...YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT!!

Hi Ladies,

I have been away for a while, but I still read some of the posts
when I get a chance. I got burnt out last year on my running and
decided to do other things such as spinning and the elliptical, but
now I'm back and ready to run a marathon again. I signed up for New York last year and got in, but I postponed it for this year so here I am working on my base so that I can start my 24 week marathon program on May 22nd. I have been running 4 days per week and put in between 25 to 30 miles per week along with 2 days of weight training. Today I was supposed to do 4 miles during my lunch hour, but it is pouring here in Los Angeles, so that means I have to do the miles on the elliptical before my lower body workout.

Carole: It is niece to see that you are till here. Are you doing any marathons this year?

Josie:)

How accurate do you think the calorie counters are on your treadmills? I read somewhere that for every mile you run it's about 100 calories. Today I ran 5.5 miles and burned 850 according to the treadmill counter. So, that would basically make it off about 250 if you use the 1 mile 100 calorie ratio? What do you all think? Karen

Thanks Diane for the running schedule! I needed something to help me be able to run for a longer period of time at a steady pace. I'm going to print it out and give it a go next time!:)

I'm back from the gym...although I did not do a full 60 mins on the treadmill, I was close. I made it to 50 mins. Around my 2nd interval my towel fell on the treadmill so I had to stop and restart to pick it up (should've just pressed pause, silly me!LOL) so I don't have my exact #s but it's something like this:

w/u 5 mins @ 3.5-4.0

intervals:

3 mins @ 5.5
2 mins @ 6.5
1 mins @ 4.0 (recovery)

Used 3 mins. recovery period @ 4.0 to recover a bit more midway through w/o.

I did 7.5 intervals and went about 4.5 miles in roughly 50 mins.:+ Now I am beat and still have to do some walking lunges...OUCH! LOL I just ate lunch so I'll let that settle, do my lunges, finish stretching and then hit the showers!

Great runs everyone!:)

Karen,
I've always read that any machine that tells you that you are burning more than say, 900 cal/hour is definitely wrong. Does the machine know your height, weight, age, gender, fitness level, heartrate (factors that have a huge impact on the accuracy of the gauge)? Some machines/moniters ask for this info. and so their read out is likely to be more accurate, so if a machine knows none of these factors, then it could easily be off by 250 cal. I'm sure someone out there has more accurate formula for you to follow, (you can try caloriesperminute.com or something like that, it has a huge list of activities and the scale can be adjusted to some of your characteristics. Can you imagine what we'd get to eat if 850 calories in 5.5 were true:7 And if you find out it was true, please alert me as soon as possible b/c there is a new jar of pb waiting in my cupboard:9

Karen, I mix it up b/c I don't want to get bored. So I speed it up every mile. This is what I did today:

1 mile @ 5.3
1 mile @ 5.5
1 mile @ 5.7
1 mile @ 5.9
1 mile @ 6.1
1 mile @ 6.3

The other 4 miles, I did interval running. It took my 92 mins

Lori:)

I'm back from lunch. I ran 3 miles in 34 minutes, which is about my normal speed. Hopefully the interval workouts will start cutting that time down to under 30 minutes in the next month or so. Funny how a month ago my long run was 30 minutes, but now it is no big deal to run that far. Even my long run of 5 miles is starting to become relatively easy, but I'm still pretty slow. It takes me about 66 minutes to run it.

It amazes me how fast you ladies are that have been running for a while. I hope to one day be as quick and cover as much mileage as you all.

I think I've read somewhere that the calorie count on machines was based on an average woman weighing 130 pounds except if you have a machine that asks for your stats.

Wow, you guys are giving me the marathon itch! I sure do miss the long runs with friends; seeing the sites, breathing the seasonal air, the fabulous euphoric feeling after a long run, and ultimately the accomplishment of completing a race goal...aahhhh

OK, back to reality! I had an appointment with my son this morning so I'll have to do my interval treadmill run with my podfitness download after work this evening before American Idol...hahahah. I am currently doing 45 to 50 minute interval runs on the treadmill 2 times a week, because I want to take it easy on my hip injury. Actually, the hip is mucho better so I don't want to re-injure it. My daughter is my husband's watchdog though! Sheesh, when I first got my treadmill a couple of weeks ago, I was having such a great time on one of my first interval runs (huge grins while running)that I was pushing it a little longer.}( HA! My daughter came over and was shaking her finger at me and said she was gonna tell "dad" if I didn't get off. Teenagers are brats! :p

Anyway, I'll keep it at 2 runs a week for a while but I don't know how long I can last, cuz this thread just gives me the "itch" all the more!

Thanks for sharing ya'll, I love this thread!

I'm just bumping this because I think it's nutty to have April 3rd's checkin on the first page and this one on the second page... :p

9 miles with running group...CHECK! We went all around downtown...crossed the Ohio River 4 times on 4 different bridges. Ran by the football stadium and the baseball stadium...where President Bush was just yesterday to throw the first pitch!! Awesome night for a run!!
