Runners Check-In 4-3-06

Sure fitkansaschick, please join us. And just as Sarah said...the PACE you run does not matter at all for you to post here!!!

If any of you wanted to figure my pace for my 16 mile trail run Sunday it comes out to about 12:30 per mile! Not real speedy...but I don't mind.. :)

Sarah...one of these years...I am going to do that Flying Pig marathon....as my fav phrase is "When Pigs Fly"...http://www.feebleminds-gifs.com/1pigflygif.gif[/img]...have not seen hide nor hair of any bear...:)

edited for Sarah....:+ }( :)

Sarah, you are such a sweetie. Thanks for putting the sentiments many of us have into your posts (specifically about speed). It's like you have big giant arms that are coming out of my computer screen and giving everyone a welcoming hug!!!

And it's great to see that you are doing better with your stress fx!!! Yay!!!!!

Dear me, now I'm even more jealous of the elliptical!!! Sigh. It will never end, will it? I'm learning bad habits from Ms. Wendy... }(

I am just happy Carole "had" a pace...it means she did not get eaten by a drunken bear with the munchies!

O.k. Carole...you said "one year"...I'll see you here in 2007!!! That's "one year"!!!

Awe, the flying pig is one I've always wanted to run! Maybe someday if I am able to run marathons again....

I LOVE THIS THREAD!! Actually, I'm only "allowed" to run my 2 days a per week on my new treadmill right now, but if all goes well, who knows! I hope I can still be classified as a "runner" still ;-) I have run numerous 5K's, 10K's, 2 half marathons, and 3 marathons in the past but last July I was sidelined by the MD due to a hip joint bursitis injury, blah, blah, yada.... I was sooo bummed as I was training for Chicago and I had already paid my entry fee and made hotel reservations! Anyway, the doctor said I needed to find something else for exercise like cycling, etc instead of running since he felt I shouldn't continue to do distance running. That's when I found Cathe and started to workout at home. I love Cathe but I still was totally missing the running. I hated seeing people out running; it made me sort of depressed. One good thing is that has turned around though is that I was not doing like many of you all are and getting in good cross training. Now that I that I am getting "balanced" using Cathe workouts, I think the running won't be so damaging this time. I am taking it easy on the treadmill and enjoying downloads from podfitness.com where I can mix my own music to their interval workouts.

Whew, enough for now, geez! I just got so excited about a runners thread! Thank you all for being so welcoming and supportive AND willing to share your knowledge! This place is so groovy!

Hey girls...Can I play too? ;)

I recently joined a gym and have started running. It's only been about 2 weeks and I only run 2-3x per week at most. I don't want to overdo it and I still want to crosstrain w/other things like spinning, Cathe cardio and the machines at the gym.

Anywho...my first attempt was on 3/19 and it was a 30 min walk/run where I basically walked for a couple of mins and then ran for a couple of mins. My speeds were 4.0 for walking and between 5 and 5.5 for the running.

My most recent run is one that I am pretty proud of...on Friday I did my first interval run. It went like this:

I did 3 mins @ 5.5 and then upped the speed pt 6.5 for 1.5 mins and walked for 30 seconds to recover at 4.0. I repeated this cycle 4 times. W/warm up and c/d it was about 30 mins worth. I wasn't very confident I would complete it and so I was ecstatic when I did.

Tomorrow I'm going back to that again but this time I want to add in more intervals and see how I do...}(

It is amazing to me how much different running is from other cardio...I have great endurance for stepping, kickboxing and I can do IMAX 2 and 3 in full yet to run for 20-30 minutes knocks the wind out of my sails like nothing else! I guess it's because it's new and I'm not used to it...keep the body guessing, right?;)

This is a very good idea and could prove to be very beneficial and inspiring to a newbie to running!:)

Karin,
I have to chime in with Sarah on a "first run for an hour" memory. It was a trail run for me, and it was HOT! It was just this August, when I in the middle of Cathe's "Bootcamp" rotation. It called for a 5 mile run, and since I didn't know how far that was I thought, "I'll just run for an hour" (my 5K time at that point was 25:00). I felt SO accomplished! And I just wanted to add my high fives to Sarah's for your run. You ROCK!!

Absolutely! If you're running, then you are a runner...'nough said!:7
There are days I feel "fast" and there are days when the only way I even know I'm running is that I'm not walking:p

And, Carole, as you said, there were hills, the first half of my 10 mile route is mostly uphillx( But there's nothing like getting to the top;)

I haven't run a timed mile since the spring (on a flat track it was 7:58), but my DH is helping me train for 2 upcoming 5K's and so I'm going to have to start getting back into speedwork instead of distance. I'm really curious to know what my new times will be as I now have a lot more mileage under my belt (and the August and January rotations!) Then we are planning on doing a local Half in the fall, so it's back to the long runs:D Before which time I will need to invest in much, much, Gatorade and a great deal of BodyGlide:p

Just wanted to add that runners at heart are more than welcome, I know I live in dread of an injury that would keep me off the road, so I cross-train a lot. Step, hi-lo, kickbox, recumbant bike (I wish I had access to elliptical or arc trainer, oohh! I love the arc trainer!!)
And Wendy, CONGRATULATIONS on an interval run, those always take it out of me, but there are so much fun and always go by so much faster for me, especially the recovery periods}( I don't have a treadmill either, so mine are all outside, and almost never on flat terrain;( Hills combined with intervals are, well, I feel like I'm sprinting, but I know I don't look like it, lol.

Thanks Saia!:)

I'ved used the eliptical a few times...pretty cool piece of equipment. Never used an arc trainer though. Don't think they even have one at my gym. I like to hop on it after using the treadmill for a change of pace. When I want a full hour of cardio I will split w/o's where I'll do some treadmill, some bike and some eliptical or any combo of the 2 of them. It's a nice work out, burns lots of calories and keeps the boredom at bay since you get to do something different after 20 or 30 mins.

I noticed on Friday that they recently put a versa-climber in my gym....WTH is that!?!? It looks waaay scarey! I won't go near it! :7 :p

Hi Tomasina, Wendy and Saia...:)...I am so glad Sarah started this thread as it has been so fun meeting all of you fellow runners....:)

thanks sarah for the info. I am learning alot from the forum and hoping to make the most out of my workouts. I am doing the cleveland rock n roll marathon in may, thought about doing the flying pigs but cleveland is a little closer so my friends and i went with that one instead. I did the air force half marathon in dayton ohio.that was my very first race ever.

so, which in everyones opinion is the best cross training workout that will help compliment your running? i read somewhere that cycling wouldnt help with your running. i know that the eliptical has helped you sarah and I might have to give that a try but I was wondering if there was anything else that helped with leg turnover and speed with the shorter races as far as crosstraining is concerned. last yr i did my bootcamp 2x week along with 3days of running and felt so exhausted at the end of my half, I want to finish strong this yr .

I've run many half's and one full marathon...which pretty much helped me to decide that the half is the perfect length for a race. LOL I most definitely did not get the marathon bug.

Not running any spring races this year. Kind of focused on muscle development...ran six awesome miles this AM, though. I'm still running about 3-4 times a week.

The best thing to help leg turnover and speed is speed work, i.e. running timed intervals on a track. There's a group that meets locally once a week for this (and for injury prevention, it's best to do that type of workout once a week, max). Perhaps you could find an equivalent in your area? Although I never think of myself as a competitive person, I always run faster/train harder with a group than I do alone.

Holy Moly, Laura...WPAFB 1/2 was my first half, too! I did it this past September!! We were running the very same race! Did you have fun? I had an absolute blast. My in-laws live a few minutes away from the base so I stayed the night with them. Tell me about your experience, I'd love to hear it! Also, are you planning on running it again this year? If so, we should meet up! I will be there but I have not yet decided on the 1/2 or the full. I want to wait to see how the Pig goes first!!LOL!!

You know, the Pig has a 1/2 as well! Just a thought...planting the seed!:)

As for cross training, I have read at least 3 times (Runners World included) that the elliptical is the absolute best cross trainer for a runner because it is zero impact and mimicks the act of running the best. ToughYRun does marathons (and does them well) and she cross trains on the elliptical...that is what sold me.

I just want to incorporate something that will get a good workout in that will compliment my running while zero impact to save my joints.

How did I miss this post?

Count me in as a novice runner :)

Curently my runs are 3 days per week. I also do two non-running cardio sessions and one body part per day including legs. Rotations change up every 4 weeks for me, but the 3 days running is in my long range plans.

I am up to 5.5 easy paced miles (9-10" mile pace) per run at this point. Although I am not quite brave enough to run in a race yet, I did one 5K last spring in support of Breast Cancer.

Thanks for stating this Sarah!

I do agree with leanbean about leg turnover and speed. I do think the best way to improve that is with interval work and other types of speedwork.

I have mostly cross trained on a Nordic Track especially when I got injured..now since I run 6 days a week it is kickboxing. I would like to try an elliptical though...:)

Can I join too? I don't post much either, but have been incorporating running into my workout program too. I live in the country, so I run on my treadmill, otherwise I would have to run on gravel. Yuck!

Anyway, I have been running every other day and have been doing sort of a 25 minute program as follows.

2 min. @3.5
10 min. @6.5
5 min. @5.5 w/50% incline
3 min. @6.0
2 min. @6.5
3 min. @3.0

This equates to exactly 2.15 miles on the treadmill. I'm trying to work up to 4 miles every other day.

I must admit that around 18 minutes I start getting a side stitch. Do any of you know how to control and/or stop this? I do not eat anything before a run as I do it first thing in the morning.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Jen

Jen...stitches usually have something to do with your breathing. Or sometimes going to fast without a good warm-up. If you can think about it...try breathing a bit deeper and see if that helps...:)

sarah, I actually did the air force half not this past sept but the one before. I went from not running ever to running my first half within 4months. I was really excited to run the air force 1/2. probably the toughest 1/2 I have done.Lots more hills than the cleveland half. In two weeks I will do the huron lighthouse half,it doesnt have any hills, so I am figuring it will be easier also. I was thinking that all marathons would be similiar to the dayton one. not true, the midalions(dont know if I spelled that right) on the other half I have done are cheaper looking than the air force. I felt like they really made sure you felt like you really accomplished something. My sister in law did the full marathon. It was tough she said but that was her first time running any races also. Have you ever done a full marathon? My friends are trying to talk me into it but I cant imagine doubling the distance. Will the flying pigs be your first time running that one? we might do that one next yr, we considered doing it last yr but went with cleveland since it was closer. I would like to go back and do the dayton half again sometime since I will be a more experienced runner. curious to see how I would do next time. If i do, we'll have to meet up. I will have to add the eliptical back into my schedule . I thought spinning would compliment my running but everything I have read said spinning doesnt help compliment with running but I am glad to hear that the eliptical does since I am looking for something to help better my running besides sprints and tempo runs. sorry to be rambling. thanks for the info.

Hey Jen!

For me side stitch usually indicates insufficient warm-up. Somedays it takes me 2 minutes to get warm and into it and some days it takes 20. If it happens, slow down, focus on good breathing, and see if it resolves. Because I'm able to continue running through the stitch (some people can't), I have to remind myself that when I'm feeling that I'm not "in oxygen", I'm running on glycogen stores, which isn't really what I want to be doing. I try to save that for my speedwork. :)

Also, make sure that you drink some water before you run, as you may have become dehydrated during the night.

Hope this helps.
