Runner's Check-In 05/11

Cathlete
Good morning, ladies!

Kristi-Sorry to hear you’re having problems with your foot. Keep us posted on your progress. Are you having it checked by an MD?

Thomasina-funny you’re bored on the step these days, cuz I just realized the same thing the other day! LOL. Weird, but GOOD!

STOP talking about Power Yoga and Bryan whats-his-name before you ENABLERS force me to buy one! LOL

As for marathon training. My coach from TNT bases his training schedules on Jeff Galloway, but I think that’s exactly why I was having knee issues late in my training for Disney. Basically, the schedule had us run long runs on Sunday, then run Tuesday and Thursday for 30-40 minutes. Cross training on M/W/F, off Saturday. All well and good, but I don’t think I was running enough during the week to warrant the LONGER runs on Sundays. Who knows?!? I think this time around, I’m going to do what a few of you are doing…merge Runner’s World and Hal Higdon, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRING IT ON!!!!!!!

Now, as for today's workout. DONE! I got on the treadmill planning on 3 miles, but felt good so I just kept going. Did 5+ easy interval miles. Followed by biceps and triceps (PUB + extras) and push-ups.

Have an AWESOME DAY!

Gayle

hello everyone,

I only ran 2miles this morning. I got caught in the rain. I planned on taking it easy today anyway since I have a 5k on saturday. Hope it doesnt rain then but it suppose to.

good going gayle, dont you love it when you feel good on your runs! I hate that fatigued feeling I get on some of them and just absolutely love it when I am having an exceptional day.

how are you feeling today sarah? I dont know how you and carole run more than the half. I cant imagine doubling the distance. you ladies are awesome.

anyway, off to get the children up and off to school. My daughter had her kindergarten screenings yesterday. She did great but I am sad since she is my baby. Time is going by way to fast!!

have a nice day everyone!!

Good Morning Gayle and Laura!
Gayle-Sounds like you are totally pumped for your next round of training and racing. Do I hear a friendly competition beginning between you and Sarah? "No, I know YOU can run it faster than that!" "Maybe, but I'm sure YOU can run it faster" :p :7 Thanks for helping the rest of us realize that not only is quitting not an option, it's not as fun either!

Laura-I hate getting caught in the rain if I'm unprepared, but as long as it's not pouring and I have my hat, I don't mind running in the rain. It's kind of cool break, something different than the usual. You DD sounds so sweet! I remember my kindergarten screenings, I think I had to hop on one foot during them. Does that sound possible? LOL!

Thomasina-Here's link to some Lomax intensifiers that I pretty much always use in order to keep my heartrate up between the blasts. You'd be surprised how upping the impact in the step portions gets you really moving: http://69.0.137.118/dc/dcboard.php?...ic_id=53622&mesg_id=53622&listing_type=search
Or you can always try Aquajock's modification and hold medball or weight while doing the workout.
Can't have you ladies getting bored with step!

Today is a 45-50 min. interval run followed by GS Chest and Triceps and some abs. It's cool and somewhat damp out today, but no real rain yet-so it was a breezy run, but very refreshing!
Have a great day!
Mattea

Hi Everyone,

It looks like the ladies in the midwest are up first today. (I live in Michigan and I think Gayla and Laura are in Ohio?) Today is a recovery day for me and I'm trying to keep true to that, but woke up feeling on the stiff side. I'm not sure it's from running or maybe Turbo Jam on Tuesday was not a brilliant Cross Train plan.

I am supposed to run an easy 4 miles, but I did a 2 mile easy walk on the treadmill and did most of the floor work on GSL to see if I could feel looser before a run. I'm going to do the run after I drop off my kids if I feel ok. DH is out of town for 2 days, so my higher goal is to do a good job with my kids while he's gone.

Gayle -- Bryan Kest is one of my faves. I'm not saying it's because someone at the videofitness review site called him Mr. Yummypants...but just listening to his words is soothing. :)

Laura -- good luck on the race Saturday. Your Sister-in-law would drive me batty. It's good you can stay centered and focus on your self. Your SIL attitude is a real joy-killer, so hold on to your spirit! Sadly, my 80yo mom is like this and my mother-in-law (dahling, she says looking 100 feet down her nose) so I know the feeling.x(

Karen--I'm impressed you can do the Sweat workout. I am definitely not up to that. How do you feel today after your run yesterday and the PUB + ab challenge?

Thomasina -- thanks for the encouragement about my run yesterday. I love the idea of not quitting chocolate. :) I like your stage-setting and drum roll for Elaine's training plan unveiling.

Christine-- good luck on your race (is it Saturday?). You are a strong woman and are working to be the best you can with what your body, spirit and mind are. Don't think dog type -- think evolving into a better breed of you !! :)

Kathy G-- how do you mix a leg-heavy workout like Low Max with all of your running? You must be mighty strong!

Carole -- thanks for the words of wisdom to be patient. I do not yet have the groove of doing speedwork and tempo runs without feeling like I am out too far out of my zone.

Pamela -- what are you up to today? How are your legs after your GSL workout yesterday + run?

Sarah -- I passed on a portion of your marathon description to a friend of mine with a daughter age 10 who has a lot of anxiety about a sport she is in. The part where you say you like who you are I thought helps me (and lots of us here, I'm thinking) and would really help a young girl trying to find her way..

Shelly C- bootcamp + L & G? Maybe someday for me, but not in the near future! It must be hard to run after such a long night shift. Thanks for the carb tip. I am having trouble figuring out how much carb pre and post workout work for me -- and especially so linking the days together, e.g. after a long run, I am on track eating more carbs and do well. But it seems my in-syncness starts to break down after 48 hours.

Mattea-- Potassium capsules sound interesting. Tell me if you come up with a brew that works for you. I'm not sure what I think of the Nancy Clark recipe. It was a little too sugary. I buy peanut butter and don't grind my own flour or anything. But I can't stop reading about sports nutrition until I get a better handle on how to balance eating carbs with my exercise.

Hi to everyone else here today! Sorry if I missed anyone. Thanks for all the support and good vibes.

Barb
:) :) :)

Oh, Barb. Did you HAVE to call him Mr. Yummypants. ENABLERS....ALL OF YOU! LOL. And, I'm actually in PA, close enough, though! LOL

Mattea-"Here's link to some Lomax intensifiers that I pretty much always use in order to keep my heartrate up between the blasts." LOL at myself! When I first read this statement, I thought "Lowmax intensifiers" were a medicine pill you take! ROFLMAO! LOL. Too funny. Once I got that straightened out in my head, lol, I LOVE the ideas for LowMax! I might just have to try that tomorrow! COOL!

Laura-I avoid running in the rain as much as possible! I even ran my long 18 mile run on the TM because it rained that day! LOL THAT'S desparate! LOL And, as for babies, my baby 'graduates' from Pre-K tonight and starts Kindergarten in the Fall, so I feel for you! Tears are on tap for me tonight! LOL

Gayle

Good morning runners!!

Gayle...for most of my marathons I have trained for I ran at least 5-6 days a week, but I know Sarah did awesome not running 6 days and using her elliptical for crosstraining...so like everything it can be just experimenting with what works.

Barb...don't you just love GS floorwork!

Karen...I wouldn't increase you your mileage more than 10% weekly. So for example if you are running 20 miles one week don't increase the total the next week more than 22 miles. This will help prevent injury as you add more miles on.

Shelly...I wouldn't feel at all bad about starting running late in your life! I know there is this woman Helen Klein, she started running in her 60's. I saw her in 2003 at age 80, I was doing a 20 mile run and she was doing the 50K! So never regret...:)...there are no limits to what you set your mind at!

Mattea...I don't warm-up again if I have already done a workout before my run. You did an awesome step workout! Oh, I do believe there is a wall...I encountered it once...:). Sounds like you have a good workout planned today!!

Christine...you do make me miss running with a dog...I am currently without but so many are running loose in my neighborhood that it became a pain to take mine when I had one..I have no doubt you will survive the half in July...:)

Wow Sarah...I can almost feel the pain when you talked about your run/walk the other night. YEOW!

Kristi...I am sorry about your heel...but you are welcome to check in here anytime!Tomasina...way to go getting Bryan Kest!! My HR is rarely high in Lowmax.I do hope we get to meet at Western States! I'd be happy to fix you a vegan meal...:)

Laura...in my experience those race predictors can be fairly accurate. I have to say with all our wind...I've been wanting the rain back...:(

I am doing some pilates and a 7 mile run.

have a great day...:)

Hi everyone, Today is my girls gymnatics class. It consumes a lot of the day plus we are off to the library. I probably wont' be back until tonight.

Today I did my tempo run for 50 min and covered 5 miles. Then I did 30 min of yoga. Man I love running. Your feel so good when your done. Don't You!!!

Carole- Thanks for the info. Two miles per week is very doable. I printed out the paper for the half. It 's amazing to be involved in such a big event as a marathon and half marathon. The work and expo's and things that go into it. I can't wait to be a part of it.

Barb- Today I feel great. The Sweat one is a challenge but you will get it. I have to say I did yoga for a straight month along with my other workouts before I even tackled it. I was nursing an injury in November in my calf so most of my workouts were low impact and yoga. So I got good at it because it was what I was doing on a daily basis. Now it's not as easy as it use to be because I don't focus on that tape anymore. I enjoy the other ones much more. At the time I was so determined to do it. When i finally got it I kept walking around showing my dh how I could stand on my head. By the time the month was up my calf was better and then I went back into Cathe and fell out of yoga daily. I still always incorporate yoga 3 times a week but back then I was doing it everyday.

Hello to everyone eles. I have to shower and get to the gymnastics building. Have a wonderful day.

Hello ladies!

Gayle, Bryan Kest is great and Mr Ymmypants fits him to a T! Running two runs at 3 to 4 miles during the week with a long run thrown in on the weekend doesn't sound like much running to prepare for a marathon. I'd *say* you're ready to move on to something more. I can't run as many days as Carole does without getting injured so I switch out 1 or 2 runs with the elliptical. I do have an appointment in a week or so with a Dr. that I hope will get to the bottom of what my injury problem is.

Laura, My baby is going to kindergarten in September too. She's do excited and I'm sooooo sad!!! It's definately a bittersweet time. I HATE running in the rain and avoid it whenever possible. It's a good thing I live in on the CA coast where it hardly ever rains.

Mattea, Now, I LOVE cool, breezy, damp runs. I might have to try out your LowMax intensifiers and see if it eases the boredom for me. Everyone seems to love that workout but it just seems to go on and on and on and on for me....

Barb, I hardly ever schedule recovery days because they seem to just happen naturally on their own.

Karen, I love to run too!!!!

Today I'm going to be doing 60 min on the elliptical and PUB.

Hello to everyone who comes later. I also have to work today so that means I'll be on the computer and will probably be back to check on ya'll!

Oops! Forgot Carole. Hi Carole!!!

Good morning!!
Karen- I love your enthusiasm, your posts inspire me. :)

Barb- Sounds like you are being VERY smart in your training and not pushing it, planning with recovery days, etc. Staying injury free should be the primary goal with all runners, not going after a PR.I'm a recent convert to Bryan Kests Power Yoga....I love the MrYummypants comment;-) I'm only into the toning segment and havent even gotten the nerve to look at the sweat workout:eek:

Gayle- Thank you so much for the tip about the Runners world training plans for people with irregular work schedules. This check in is so great for advice as well as encouragement. I got a kick from your description of an "easy 5+ mile interval run" that definitely places you in the hardcore kick*** runner category :7

Carole- thank you for your encouraging words about aging. Hopefully
I can someday be considered an inspiration. I'll be 50 next March and will have run a marathon by then....I hope! This check in will keep this old bod going!

Laura- good luck on your 5K this weekend...if it rains it will just
keep you cool! I wish you could send the rain here (I'm in Arizona)

Mattea- Wow- a long interval run followed by GS CT, abs? You're a tough lady!

Time to get moving.... my long run is today and I'm going for 18 miles

ShellyC

Good morning,

I'm off to a late start this morning. My 3yo has been waking up during the night for about 4 nights straight. Last night he was crying in his sleep. I thought he fell out of the bed so I went running to the room, but he was still in bed with his eyes closed crying. He had a bad dream. He dreamt his sister took all of his toys. Go figure :). Sydni would never take his toys -- he's more likely to take and break her things :). I felt so bad for him because it was still a bad dream for him. He calmed down, but woke up again about 2hrs later and climbed into our bed where he proceeded to kick me in the face. :p

Anyway, today is GS B/B/S and since I like cardio, I'm adding a short bike ride (Also, I need a few things from the store. :))

Gayle, I'm amazed by your energy. Your kids must have so much fun with you!

Barb, yesterday's run was great. I ended up doing 3 miles instead of 2 because I just didn't want to turn around at the 1 mile mark. :) The bike ride was fun too.

Karen, your pictures are great!

Hi Carole, Elaine, Mattea, Laura (I hope it doesn't rain during your race), and all who follow.

Have a great day!
Pamela

P.S. I can totally relate to children growing up fast and out of nowhere. Last night my 10 yo told me her "breasts are tender." I guess she's starting to grow breasts. Where did my baby go?!!

I see that I posted at the same time as Shelly and I want to make sure I wish her well on her 18 mile run! Man, I feel so bad because I forot your 1/2 and now I don't remember what you are training for!

Editing to add: Pamela, I didn't forget you! Really! My baby called me to do something for her and I clicked on post. I can totally relate to not getting a good night's sleep because my DD makes her way into my bed practically every night and needs to sleep right up against either me or DH. Since she's the last of four then I let it slide more often than not but, geez, it will be nice to have a little space and privacy!

Good morning lovely running ladies!

I went for a 5 mile run today, with the Boo (Tucker Boo - aka the Boo, and several other names, some not too flattering). Got a side stitch at 4.5 miles - think it's the running with the camel pack - only time I get side stitches is when I run with that. Might have to rethink that. Here I am, all sweaty and icky, running at 6AM when a trucker comes back and shouts, "Looking good BABY!" Yeah, I know I'm supposed to be insulted, but hey I'm 41 years old, looking my worst and getting cat calls. I felt pretty darn good! :p

Gayle - Oh just go ahead and buy Bryan Kest - or would you prefer I get him for you instead of a Cardio Coach - you're choice... *winks* You can then stare at Mr. Yummypants. :+

Laura - they DO grow up so fast, don't they? My "baby" starts high school next year. I think I'm running to prove I don't need a cane and a rocker yet!

Mattea - No step boredom allowed - we'll have to put our heads together. I LOVE running in the rain. It's so soothing.

Barb - Actually, I'm just doing a half in July so far. Nothing coming up soon. Thanks for asking!

Carole - I love running with my dog - obviously. I feel safer, but we have strict leash laws here in California, so dogs must be tied or it's a $350 fine - I don't have the loose dog issues.

Karen - have fun at gymnastics with DD!

Shelly - I'm 41 and going for my first half in July. Your not old. The friend I climb mountains with is 55. And she can beat my butt up and back.

Elaine - Hey there! Sounds like I need to hope on the elliptical more often for training. I've only been running twice a week and on Saturdays. Time to change!

Pamela - kids are fun - eh? Glad he's okay, but wait 'til he's a teenager! *rolls eyes*

Karen..it sounds like you are very inspired for this half! Good tempo run today..

Shelly...good luck on your 18 miles today. I seem to have always liked that particular distance..:)...so a marathon before you are 50....I have to do a triathlon before I am 50...:)

Hi Elaine...looks like a great ellipitical workout!

Good workout today Pamela. I do love those GS workouts. I think it is the use of the band...:)

Christine...I am always amazed at what gets yelled at you when you are sweaty and icky!! Might be why I try to avoid busy roads...:)..That is weird about the side stitch at 4.5 miles???

I had a fun interval run today. I started out on my 7 mile course. After 15 min I pushed hard for 60 seconds, then recovered for 2 and a half minutes, then repeated that interval 10 times. Wow...yes the last 2 miles was slow...:)

Off to work...:)

Carole - I was surprised at the side stitch, too. I've gotten them before when I was not in very good condition, but I'm in decent shape right now. I was able to stop and walk about 100 feet, then start running again and it was gone. I got one last Saturday, too, and blamed it on the yogurt I ate, but I did not eat anything this morning besides some coffee with soy milk. The only thing the two days had in common was the fact that I was wearing my camelpack. It adds weight in a weird place. I'll try my run on Saturday without the pack to see if that helps. And yes - it IS weird what gets yelled at you when you're hot and sweaty.

No worries Barb - I wish I were running this weekend! DH is in India with his mom, so I'm going to be bored! I'd love something to do! Anyone want to come to San Jose for a party! Okay, limited alcohol, and vegetarian food, but it would still be a great time!

Good afternoon ya’ll!

I started out today with a great workout and did my new Bryan Kest DVD and things were going good, feeling pretty good, then wouldn’t ya know it, my patience is once again dealt a nasty card. CAR TROUBLE!! Ughghgh! $$$$$ UGGGHH $$$$ and lots of $$$$$ $754.00 to be exact! Anyway my headache and bad mood are quickly lifting after signing on a reading you guys’ posts! Thanks for brightening back up my day and giving me some chuckles! What can I say, you guys just always ROCK!

Gayle – (enable) BUY THE BRYAN KEST (enable) BRYAN KEST ROCKS (enable) LOL – just kidding, about the enabling that is! I’m going to buy his other series though. You may want to watch a couple of clips on collagevideo.com before you decide, or since I’m a nice enabler, I will send you the DVD I have now to hold you over if you want, but only after I get my new ones. He talks a lot but then it grows on you. He gives really great instructions in my opinion. Anyway, GREAT feeling when you are done. Totally stretched out my tight legs and hips.

Laura – GOOD LUCK with your 5K this weekend! Awe, I remember when my youngest went to kindergarten…so cute…now he’s graduating 8th grade next month!! Time does fly!

Mattea- Thanks so much for the intensifier info! I may try the med ball approach too!

Barb – Yeah, but I do have to stay clear of chocolate as it can get me into trouble -- dang chocolate! I feel stiff a lot too but that Bryan Kest sure takes care of that !

Carole – HELEN KLEIN is my IDOL!! I have a picture of her after crossing the finish line at CIM in 4.5 hours on my fridge! You are too nice, thanks for the offer of a vegan meal YUMMY!!! I’ll let you know where I’ll be at Western States when they tell me in the next couple of weeks.

Karen – I can’t wait till I’m good enough with Bryan Kest to show my DH that I can stand on my head! LOL He’ll probably just shake HIS head and laugh!

Shelly – Good Luck with your 18 miles!

Elaine – Hi Elaine…you and Sarah are going to enable me into an elliptical, I just know it! The question is, where the heck would I put it! I could toss out the sofa in the family room and put it there and just tell my kids too bad, sit on the dog pillow to watch the TV….yeah, that’s an idea!

Pamela – Howdy, I remember the sleepless nights, oh wait, they still cause sleepless nights no matter what age.

Christine! - Way to go with the compliments! LOL I’m 41 (that’s fourtywonderful) and I have been carded for buying wine 3 times this year already. I am tied with my record of last year …I say bring it on baby! Of course I make a huge deal about getting carded and ask the clerk if they will please announce that over the loud speaker so that the entire store will know that I am being asked for my ID – YIPPEE!

Well, hello to everyone else that signs on today… and in case some of you missed, I posted stuff late yesterday too…. Have a good rest of the day all!

Hi Runers!
This is one of my favorite threads each day. Although I do not plan to join the marathon club or even run many races, I still enjoy sharing in everyones experiences and increasing my own miles s-l-o-w-l-y. :)

I'm checking in late today. I did Push -Pull and Rhythmic step for a non running day. Tomorrow will be a 6 mile day again.

Barb-The potassium works very well for me. I know that before I workout I can’t eat too much, but that “quick carbs” fruit—mixed with a “long carb” whole grain toast or a few bites of whole grain cereal work very well for me. So long as I am properly hydrated that is. Post long run I’m way into carbs, but weirdly, not cheap or even “quick” carbs. I want whole grains, grain, grains, lol! From looking at the recipe, the lemon juice might help cut the sweetness if you were out of it the first time.

Gayle-Yes, only $19.99 for a full month of my patented “Lomax intensifiers”guaranteed to turn on allow you to bend lower, squat deeper, lunge further, and real feel the “fire in the thighs” LOL! You are too funny! Glad you liked the moves, they make the step portions more like Cathe’s more steady state workouts like Step Works or RS.

Carole-I love getting into some of Cathe’s older step, bumping it up to 8 inches and just learning some new moves! The intervals went very well today 35 minutes on intervaling, mixing it up with 1x1, 30x1, 1x2 the time just flies! What kind of pilates do you use? And if I have to do a triathalon before I’m 50 I hope they manage to invent bionic legs sometime in the next 25 years, not for the actual event, but for what I’m sure the training will do my legs afterwards!

Karen-I’m with Barb, you win the pretzel award in my eyes! You half sounds like so much fun! The one I’m eyeing for the fall is only a half and not a big event, but now I’m starting to look around.

ShellyC-Thanks! I even managed the pushups on my toes again this morning, and didn’t get the “arms have strangely morphed into limp noodles” effect of last time =-) And as far as tough ladies go, running a marathon, well, I’m still chasing you, lol!

Elaine-Hope you get some insight into your nagging injuries! See I think that Lomax moves pretty quickly, b/c you only do each step combo 4 times (whereas in C&W, where you do them 6 times I’m bored stiff by the 5th!) The modifications should help ease the boredom b/c they change during the build-up and finished product.

Pamela-You did all that on such interrupted sleep! Tough tough!

Christine-My DH usually accompanies me on my run, so I kind of know what it’s like to have your canine company, =-) LOL. Now you just need to figure out how to get Tucker to wear a pack to carry things for your long runs! And you probably were looking good! I’m up for the invite if you can swing the plane ticket—I’ll take mine vegan and no alcohol, but we can cook up some good plans to throw at those currently experiencing step boredom =-)
