Run/Jog/Walk Question

Ok - I know this a debated topic but I would like to hear from the "educated crowd"

I keep hearing Cathe and others refer to running in some rotations. Is running really better than jogging or walking fast? I know it is hard on the knees but I think I would just do it two times per week. Would this combined with one day of step and one day of kickbox be enough to lose? and is it better to lean down? Thanks you guys Sharon

Is running better than walking as far as burning calories? Yes, but it really depends on how fast you are running or walking. Running burns 100-150 calories/hour. I think running combined with step and kickboxing would give you lots of variety, but be careful of injury as all three have high levels of impact. You need to make sure not only your knees can take it, but your ankles, shins, calves & achilles can too. I run 4-5x/week and I can't do step because of the impact. I imagine if you are only running twice a week, you can probably still do step. Just make sure you stretch lots after running and take rest days (ie, don't do step the day after running, you really run the risk of overuse injury that way)

I've heard that running/walking/jogging all burn about the same amount of calories - approximately 100 calories a mile based on a person who weighs 150 pounds. Running will burn those calories faster because you can run a mile much faster than walking it (with the exception of those amazing speed walkers!).
I would definitely start out with a walk/run program to build up your endurance and avoid injuries.
Good luck!

Also, if you can walk and maintain that really fast pace (the one at which you really feel like breaking into a run), you can blast off as many calories as running. It's hard to do. The trick is intervals. Blast for two minutes then ease back for one. Then repeat. And repeat. And repeat!

Marnie--
Are you sure you can't do step????? I always bill step as a much lower impact than running. Even the ACSM agrees--I have an old article from them that I use for folks, called Step--High on Fitness, Low on Impact (or something like that). Now a person could MAKE it hi-impact by jumping, but I always give the flat-footed version and add in a lot of directional changes to make movements bigger without jumping because I'd like to have my knees when I'm 80yo hehehe. With the proper height step, and lots of directional changes, you should be able to get a great workout with very little impact.

Kim- yes, I can do step when it's low-impact using my 4" step, but on the two days/week I don't run, I try to rest my ankles & knees. You're right though, I didn't mean to say no one should do step if they are running. I do have to keep it low impact though, you're right. I did power max a few weeks ago with full force (it's just so much fun) and my achilles were killing me the next morning!

thanks for the advice!
