Cathlete
I read a previous post from you about pilates and researched some of your suggestions. My question is re Sara Picot's More than Mat series. I have never done pilates, but am strong, flexible with good core strength. My exercise techniques are good as I was a fitness/aerobic instructor for years and I incorporate a balance of cardio, weights and stretching.

Would I do well beginning with her Intermediate w/o or should I begin at the Beginning? I think the Interm description refers to the fact she offers basic beginning technique. I just didn't want to purchase the beginning if I might advance or become bored too quickly.

Thanks. Have a fun day.

Melody,
I think you will do very well starting with her Intermediate level...she does offer basic beginning technique and excellent cueing:)

IMO, Pilates is wonderful to add to a workout week. I really believe it's what keeps me "lean & mean" as DH likes to say (I don't do a whole lot of cardio and can't dance to save my life, but I love Pilates).

Enjoy!
Robin:)

Just to clarify myself....Pilates is not a "fat burning" workout unless you are on a reformer with a jumpboard, but I do believe it is muscle defining.

Robin, thanks for your response. I need something to shake up my workouts and think pilates could be the thing. I love cardio, so I get plenty. But some days those darn weights just don't call my name. Well, maybe they do, but I have selective hearing.

Thanks again. Have a fun day.:+

RE: rjroubiRobin..pilates ?..please/Melody

Melody,
Since you are new to Pilates, and you are jumping right in....you are going to find their are generally 2 main approaches to Pilates...one is commonly called a New York Style and the other is called a California Style. Joe Pilates and Romana practice the more classical repertoire and traditional posture cues where the base of the lower back is generally flattened and the pelvis tucked using the butt muscles a lot in the work. The California (aka West Coast Pilates) teachers and Stott Pilates, in contrast, focus on a more neutral pelvis or spine which is more in line with the way a person naturally stands, with a curve in the low back and not a flattened low back. (Their belief is practicing in neutral spine protects the back from injury.)

So you are aware...Sara Picot practices more of a New York Style doing her work mostly in what is called an imprint position (back flattened). I really don't think you will be disappointed in her "More Than Mat Pilates (Intermediate)"....it really one of my favorites because mimics so many of the exercises (without the weights) that are done on the Pilates Reformer (coordination, short spine, elephant etc...). (I bring it on vacation...shhh;)) She does have that entire instructional section on the fundamentals so you should be able to get the breathing down without having to buy the basic DVD;-)

As for style preference.... For me, neutral spine is more difficult to maintain because of my body type, but I will never ever limit myself to any style.

I just wanted to make sure I gave you this info before you picked up another Pilates DVD that was another style and you were totally confused when they told you to do something else with your lower back ;-)

Pilates is just so odd yet wonderful....it borrows from dance, gymnastics and yoga but still has so many of its own movements that distinguish itself from other techniques......hope you enjoy it.

Please let us all know how it all goes!

HTH,
Robin;-) ;-)

Hi again Robin. Thanks for the great info. Since I live "confused", I would have been more "confused" when faced with different instructional methods. I'll be on Amazon tonight ordering, and we all know you don't go to Amazon and order just ONE item.;-)

RE: rjroubiRobin..pilates ?..please/Melody

Ah...it is all good and fun.. I am still learning :) and really I love it. Just to help you along...Debbie's workouts (fitnessfreak) are great for fitting Pilates workouts in...um...by the way I think she may know you;-) Something about some big fight (some skinny little itty bitty broad and taller tiny widdle tiny thing)...heck, I wasn't there....all I know is the the little tiny short thing was Debbie's favorite....hehehe:p Anyway, just have lots of fun!

Robn:)
