Top 10 Reasons Chicago Didn't Get the Olympics

10. Dead people can't vote at IOC meetings

9. Obama distracted by 25 min meeting with Gen. McChrystal

8. Who cares if Obama couldn't talk the IOC into Chicago? He'll be able to talk Iran out of nukes.

7. The impediment is Israel still building settlements.

6. Obviously no president would have been able to acomplish it.

5. We've been quite clear and said all along that we didn't want the Olympics.

4. This isn't about the number of Olympics "lost", it's about the number of Olympics "saved" or "created".

3. Clearly not enough wise Latina judges on the committee

2. Because the IOC is racist.

1. It's George Bush's fault.

Stay Classy! It must warm the cockles of your heart to think that the President lost the Olympic bid. He got what he had coming right? What you and a few others on this thread fail to understand is that it wasn't about him and it wasn't for him. Chicago has been working for this since 2007. Thousands of people worked hard for this and 84% of Americans would have like to see the Olympics in Chicago. Obama is not hurting from this, the people of Chicago are, so go ahead and laugh it up. He went there because the city asked him to and G.W would have done the same thing for his home town. Our president and other heads of state from the other four countries went there and sang the praises of their country, but only here, in America, you will find a bloc of people who just wanted him to fail and take joy in it.

If Democrats did some crap like this, they'd be branded Un-American.

Congratulations to Rio. It's quite an achievement to be the first South American country selected for the Games. For those who are celebrating the fact that Chicago lost, I feel sad that you are letting politics get ahead of your pride in your country.

Blame it on Rio . . . .

Where did you get that figure (84%)???? According to everything I saw and heard - the majority of CHICAGO did not want it. And quite obviously the IOC didn't think they should have it - only 18 votes and they were out.

Some facts:

The bid process alone for Chicago cost $100 million.

The budget had they been awarded was 3.5 billion with a $450 emergency back up fund.

And - well now your forced me into this - It cost us over 1.5 million for the Prez and Wife to travel there. Could have saved a few dollars if Michelle would have traveled with her husband or the other way around. Or she could have traveled with Oprah.

You sound very bitter . . .

The fact that it is a first should warm the cockles of your Democratic heart - no S. American country has hosted. Doesn't this go along with the Hopey-Changey thing you espoused a year ago.

And don't for one moment think that this was not so much about the Obama's but the cronies in Chicago who were going to make a bundle on this. They are the one's crying tonight and probably pretty peeved.

No country/city is perfect but it is nice to see it go to our neighbors to the far south.

It cost $ 1.5 Mio for the President and the First Lady to travel to Europe???? Where did you get those "facts"?

What I find more mind boggling than anything is that some people who claim to love America celebrate the fact that Chicago lost - I mean CELEBRATE! But it escapes their narrow-minded brains that this would have created jobs and lots of them. It doesn't matter to them though because it seems to be all about making Obama fail without any consideration as to the country that they claim to love. How pathetic!

What on Earth is the problem with Obama traveling to try and promote America? The last time I checked this also belongs to the job description of the president. Not to mention that the heads of state for Madrid, Tokio and Rio de Janeiro also traveled to Kopenhagen to pitch for their country/city.

The more I listen to some elements on the right, the more repulsed I get. It is not about a legitimate disagreement or different view. That I think would be healthy and a debate about the issues is what should happen but to say NO to every.single.thing without having a plan of their own makes them look like opportunists. It is vicious, it is unproductive and it is just about disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing and the hope for political gain, all of this aimed at derailing this president, and thus deliberately taking the risk that things get worse for America. Shame on those people!

I agree, and I also find this on the democrat side. I have some views that agree with the typical republican, and some views that agree with the typical democrat. If I ever say something about Obama that I don't agree with or like, I get attacked by democrats that want to defend everything he does. No party is perfect, and no president is perfect, republican or democrat, and I wish we could all realize that and work together - rather than make it about shouting matches to see who can yell I'M RIGHT louder than the other guy.

I agree, there are some on the left that just make me roll my eyes. I happen to think that it is not about race every time someone disagrees with Obama and I get really annoyed when people cry racism everytime someone disagrees with the president. Uggggh!!

No party is perfect! There are a lot of things that I agree with on the right but a lot more on the left :p It's the viciousness and venom spewed - quite frankly most predominantly on the extreme right though - that is starting to get to me.

I am a life long resident of Illinois. I would have loved to see Chicago get the Olympics. However I heard back last summer that it was very likely that Rio would get it because of South America never hosting the Olympics.

I found it very arrogant of the press to be touting that the fact that President Obama and Oprah went to talk to the committee that it was a shoe in. Do I think he should have gone? Well yes, I do. I do think it was important enough to try and get and to use his great speaking skills to get. However, to think that would sway anyone in this, no, I think that build up was wrong.

Now some of my thoughts on the practicality of this. While it would have brought many jobs, it also would have cost the state of Illinois greatly. We are one of the states in the worst financial status in the country. We are reeling from the corruption and ineffective leadership that this state has had and still has. This would have been terrible financially for the state of Illinois and its tax payers.

Lastchance, why is it OK to have many, many, many top 10 funny lists and jokes go out Republicans, and none with this administration? Develop a thicker skin and learn to laugh when something is funny. Part of being in power is dealing with this sort of thing. President Obama is very much aware of this, and is learning to deal with it. I think you should too.

Thank you Dorothy for your Illini input! Very well said.

Do the math on the travel expense - two planes (727 AND 747), staff, security - all of the media outlets were reporting 1.5 mil. It's not rocket science.

Carola - you have an opinion of EVERYTHING don't you?

This was not about rooting against America - it was rooting for what I felt was the right thing for the IOC to do.

Carola I agree with you, though I think the viciousness has had fair share on both sides here. There were some awful, appalling things said about Bush during his time in office. This is short-term memory loss by both of the parties: Liberals are now crying foul against the attacks on Obama, conveniently forgetting the hideous things said about Bush. Conservatives cried foul during Bush's presidency because they felt that he/conservatives would be attacked by the left no matter what was said/done/suggested. Now they are doing the same thing to Obama and the liberals.

Both parties have and are acting like spoiled children with their "well they started it!" attitudes. They exhaust me. And the venom gets us nowhere.

You say that like it is wrong to have an opinion! But I guess it's only okay to have an opinion when it is the same as yours.

I am sure President Bush' and Laura Bush's 4-day pleasure trip to watch the Olympics in Bejing cost nothin. But I guess that's different  It may have escaped your attention that President Obama also met with the Afghan war commander Gen. McChrystal who flew from London to Copenhagen. I guess President Obama is able to multi-task.

Agreed! It is not a big secret that I can't stand George W Bush but I thought some of the attacks from the left were outrageous. It's uncalled for and leads nowhere!

But I do think there was no comparison between the attacks on Bush and the attacks on Obama. Maybe that is a matter of perceiption but to hear people say that they pray for Obama to be killed, people going to an Obama townhall with a gun strapped on, the rhetoric gets really scary, not only from Rush Limbaughs and Glenn Becks of this world.

You have GOT to be kidding - right? I remember seeing effigies of Bush being hung . . the attacks on Bush were just as vicious.

He met with McCrystal for 30 mins. I hardly call that multi tasking. The 60 min. interview must have nudged him a bit after ignoring the Gen. for over two weeks.
