Rice Protein Powder

Cathlete
I know that the subject of protein powders has come up again and again, but I've spent a lot of time searching and can't really come up with much on rice protein powder. Being vegan I don't do whey or egg protein, and I'm having trouble digesting so much soy lately, as well as a desire to stay away from soy protein isolates and in looking at the different hemp protein powders available (thanks for the rec. Kathryn!) I've come across rice protein powders which I didn't even know existed. I'd like to try hemp, but it is more expensive than other "vegetable" protein powders, which taste a little too vegetable-like for my everyday taste/use, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with rice protein powders?
TIA,
Mattea

Just wanted to add, that at 60 cal. and 12 gm. protein (plain, vanilla, chocolate, mixed berry flavors w/ no artificial chemicals or sweeteners) it is particularly appealing.

I've tried a rice vanilla that wasn't too bad. I don't remember the hemp Kathryn talked about but the one I tried was...yukky....so hopefully she will see this post...:)...Carole

Thanks for the quick response Carole!
Do you remember the brand that you tried? I've mostly seen the Nutribiotic brand.
Also, if you can remember, how did you prepare it? And why didn't you keep using it?
Thanks for all your help:7

Mattea...I don't remember the brand, I get it in my Heatlh Food store...I do still use it, it is just the Spirutein tastes better....But when I get some more I will let you know what brand...:)...Carole

edited to add...I do believe it is the NutriBiotic brand...

Mattea,
I have both the MLO (from Veganessentials) and Nutribiotic brands (from Whole Foods) of Brown rice proteins. I must admit I like the way the MLO mixes better in my oatmeal in the morning (I cook them together and it blends better than the Nutribiotic brand), but for some odd reason it has quite a bit more calories (110 vs 60 calories) and only slightly more protein (15 vs 12 gms) per serving size. Not an issue for me, but might be for some people who count calories. If I'm just adding it in a smoothie I really don't care what brand I use because I don't drink the rice protein mixes on "their own." I don't like the taste of the vanilla or chocolate rice protein mixes in water, rice, soy or almond milk. I only seem to like the Vegan Complete plain (rice and pea protein)...even then I usually only drink it as a smoothie with a banana or berries or mixed with Vega Berry.

As for hemp protein, I use a scoop of Manitoba Harvest in my Vegan complete/Vega Berry mix with 1/2 cup blueberries and 1/2 of a bananas. I just really like hemp as a protein source...much better than rice..only because it happens to be one of the finest sources of raw protein in nature. It contains all 10 essential amino acids as well as my Omega 3s,6s, and 9s. I know it's green...but it's just such good stuff;)

JMO,
Robin:)

ETA: And no...I will not put hemp in my oatmeal any time soon...;)

Robin or Kathryn,
What does hemp protien powder taste like? I'd like to try it but if it tastes like poo, I don't know if I can handle it. I have sensitive taste palate as well as very sensitive nose. If it tastes kind of like poo, can you hide the taste with fruit or peanut butter? Thanks!

Lisa

Oh no...I could never have hemp protein powder it by itself...just like I could never ever have ground flax seeds by themselves...ewww (yep, my guess is it would be like pooh;)). I have to put it in my regular protein shake with berries and bananas). I believe Kathryn buys the hemp nuts and might be able to tell you more about whether or not they are yummy. (I just would rather just add a scoop of hemp protein into my regular protein smoothie for a boost). I really don't think it would blend well with peanut butterx(

Robin:)

ETA: Then again....I never tried it with peanut butter..LOL.

>>It doesn't taste like poo (that I know of, since *I* have never tasted poo!;) ). Hemp seeds (at least the Nutiva brand) taste kind of like sunflower seeds, as does their brand of protein powder. Manitoba harvest also is good. But I don't use hemp protein by itself, I mix in in my morniing smoothie.

Hemp may be somewhat of an acquired taste, but I have also gotten more used to the flavor of "Vitamineral Green," a green superfood supplement that I started to add to my smoothies a wee bit at a time (now, with the hemp and green foods, my smoothies are greying purple!).

As for rice protein, I actually prefer a pea/rice blend or just pea protein powder. Again, I don't take any of these straight, but mix them in a smoothie with juice and berries (and lots of other stuff!).

VeganComplete, which Robin mentioned, has an 'artifical" vanilla or sweetener taste to it (though it doesn't contain either) when I tried it straight, so I mix it in a smoothie as well.
After I switched from soy-based protein powder to this, I realized how much soy was affecting my digestion (in a negative way). Now, I pretty much avoid isolated or concentrated soy protein.

Kathryn and Robin,
Thanks tremendously for the feedback! I've been experiencing the negative digestion problems from soy and have already cut out a all isolated or concentrated soy protein and limited the amount of natural soy products as well, I just don't seem to digest them as well as other sources of protein.x(
I'm very interested in trying a variety of these protein sources (actually I'll probably end up getting several and rotating for variety of taste as well as nutrition). If you have the time I would appreciate source information on the products you recommend, links to websites or just that you buy them at the local store so that I can find the best deal. :D A grad student's salary doesn't allow for too much experimentation;)
Thank you again ladies!

I get most of mine from www.veganessentials.com . Excellent service. Fast shipping. Low shipping costs ($5.95 or $6.95...that's it!).

They also have some of the protein powders/meal replacements available in single-serviing packages so you can try them out.

I wouldn't reocmmend the hemp protein powder they sell, though. I just got it, and it seems to not taste as good as the other brands I've tried (Manitoba Harvest and Nutiva).

One of the owners of the site (Ryan) is a vegan strength athlete (featured in the February issue of VegNews magazine) and he could also help answer some of your questions about the various protein powders. www.veganbodybuilding.com is a good place to get info as well.

I bought some Ultimate Meal protein powder from Vitamin Shoppe. It is a blend of quinoa, millet, brown rice, pea, flax seed, etc. If you want to learn more about it, check out their website www.ultimatelife.com. Or go to www.vitaminshoppe.com. It seems pricey, but when you break it down to a per serving price, it's not bad. Much cheaper and healthier than Smoothie King, etc. And I use 1/3 cup per shake which is plenty for me (I think they suggest 2/3 cup). You do need some berries or other fruit to make it more palatable though.

So I have a question for anyone - do you know if you can refrigerate or freeze protein powder? I have a big can of it that will take me awhile to use. The directions say to use within 2 months of breaking the seal, and I know I won't finish it by then.

Melissa

Thanks for the quick responses ladies. Kathryn, I'll definitely check out veganessentials.com especially with the single serve packets. I know it will probabaly take me a little while to decide. I'll let you know if I find any other deals and what I think of the products that I try.
:) :)
