Rhythmic Step

Bernard

Cathlete
Hi all, just wondering what everyone thinks of Rhythmic step ? Despite all the mambos and shuffling, it looks like a cool step workout and the music is good too.
At the moment I am awaiting Mega Step Blast and Wedding video. I thought I would start off with these, and thought about ordering before Christmas, Rhythmic Step, Cardio Kicks, and IMAX, does anyone think I am being a bit ambitious going for these when I am such a new Cathe fan ?

Many thanks
Anna

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-02 AT 12:14PM (Est)[p]I for one love Rhythmic Step but it took me a while to learn its quite dancy but give it time you might even get to like the mambos.

Imax is the toughie so modify, modify, modify if you think you can't do an interval then do a modification its more basic than Rhythmic Step with its moves but its way intense.

Cardio Kicks I find the easiest part is the power drills I'm still modifying on the first section.

Again these are great tapes to grow into and as you develop with them you will love them.

On VF there are quite a few critics of the knee, kick move but its one that I absolutely love. Watch it a couple of times before doing it once is not enough.

P.s Bernard you asked me on one of your posts yesterday where I got The Method vids I got them here in Border Oxford Street they do deliver so you can ring and order them. However I found them not quite to my liking I picked up lots of tips from them I have Stott pilates (my sister doesn't like Moira voice) she is a good instructor Stott Pilates they are based in Canada I ordered direct no problems with delivery great service.

I am thinking about trying the Winsor tapes I'm looking for less talk more action. I find that many of the tapes give lots of information on form which is great when you are starting out with them but when you have been doing the same tape for a while its boring.

Hi Babs,

Thanks for the info - I just love the look of Cardio Kicks, I think I know which movement you mean, the knee kick move, I am pretty sure that move was in my Aerobics Oz Style kick-A-Robics video that I did last night, and OMG do I ache today ? Kickboxing gives a really good upper body workout, doesn't it ?

I had been wondering about Stott Pilates, what is wrong with Moira's voice ? I have to ask !

The only one I have is a Lynne Robinson one, which again is quite informative. I just wish i could get the breathing right, I find I am so busy concentrating on controling a movement that I forget about the breathing ! Is the breathing carried out like that so you do control each Pilates movement correctly ?

I can't compare pilates to yoga, I just don't think Yoga is me, I think it would bore me, having said that I have never done it.

I did some abs work last night and followed your advice Babs, and it was much better, I took a break when I needed to and shook off my feelings of being a failure - so many thanks for that !

Must dash, about to get children's dinner ready. I will check out Jennifer Kries's website later tonight.

many thanks

Anna

I've done all of Cathe's step tapes, and Rythmic Step was, for ME, the hardest to learn.

Imax is not hard to learn but IS intense, and Cardio Kicks is not hard to learn.

Hi Anna

This is my second attempt my computer frozen before so here goes.

Moira Stott speaks in a very slow deliberate manner that's what my sister finds so irratating but I think her tapes are good I have her 3 matwork tapes and 2 of her fitness circle tape. She gives great tips on breathing and starts the exercising by breathing and then the move. I believe it is the case and it helps to get your core muscles working effectively also her workouts are time efficient she has some new tapes to as well.

I agree with yoga I will stick with pilates myself, I didn't like Lynn Robinson as she gives so much information that if you do the tapes regularly I personally would get quite fed up.

Enjoy your meal Jennifers site doesn't allow you to order unfortunetly.

Although I love Rhythmic Step, I found it difficult to learn, choreography-wise. I think that when I finally am able to do the whole tape through (I almost have it all down now), I will LOVE this tape because there is nothing monotonous or repetitive in this tape, which makes it so much fun.

IMAX is incredibly tough intensity wise, but simple choreographically, like the others have said. I'm still working on not modifying a couple of sections, I'm hopeful some day I can actually do IMAX without modifications. I do have to say this one is my favorite Interval Tape, and really helps to develop your endurance. Cardio Kicks is another one of my favorites, all kickbox, and I love to use this one for a change of pace from all the step I do (I LOVE step tapes).

These are all definitely ones to work up to, however, and depending upon your level, deciding that there will have to be modifications made. I find that for myself (and I probably shouldn't have this mindset), that I need to pick tapes that suit my exercise level, because I tend to get frustrated if I can't complete a tape (or at least semi-complete it).

Thanks honeybunch,

I think I may order something a little easier instead of rhythmic step, maybe Step Heat. I saw an earlier post from months ago and everyone also said how hard the choreography was on Rhythmic Step.

Your profile

Hello Anna,

I was reading you profile and I thought it was very interesting. I am glad to read that you have over come anorexia and your interest in keeping fit to keep slim.

I would like to offer you my own experience. I bought Kelli Roberts Ultimate Step, but that is not advanced enough to really help you burn calories, rather it is a tape for beginners and a good introduction to stepping.

I started with tapes like Ultimate Step, Reebok The Video and The Power Work Out, Karen Voight's Energy Sprint and The Great Weighted Work Out, Cher's and Cindy Crawford. It was not until I bought Cathe that I really found the ultimate challenge.

I have some of her step tapes, but now i have taken up running and use Cathe's weight tapes to keep me really fit.

I think if you work up with Cathe's tapes, you will definitely see improvements without dieting.

I wish you luck in your quest.

RE: Your profile

Many thanks, Yen, I have just received Karen Voight's Energy Sprint through the post this morning and will be trying it out tonight. I shall let everyone know tomorrow how I have found it.
what do you think of Energy Sprint ?

Anna

RE: Your profile

It's definitely too easy for me now. But it was a good starting point because there is an upper body section after the step and an ab section (Karen is great for abs) at the end.

I think that if you have never done stepping or weights then this is the tape to go. I did have fun with it when I first started and I suppose it would be good (with the Great Weighted Work Out) if I am too exhausted from running and MIS, PH and BodyMax.

How fit are you and have you done much exercise. If you are a beginner, I would alternate this with Ultimate Step, and the Great Weighted Work out for about 4-8 weeks. After that move on to Cathe.

I would defintely reccommend it for a beginner, not for intermediate or advanced though.

I used to be where you are at the moment and, believe me, getting to the next stage is hard. Every time you move up, it's like you are starting all over again - your muscles are sore the morning after, but keep going and you will see improvements.

RE: Your profile

Thanks Yen, for the advice,
I have just had a quick look at energy sprint on the VCR and I think it is going to keep me busy, maybe I am not as intermediate as I thought ?
I seriously started exercising last October, my youngest was 10 months and in a good routine so I got back into it. I have always been into exercising since I was a teenager, and worked out regularly until I fell pregnant with my first child, and had 3 children in the next 4 years.
I was doing really well last year, and then I went through a lapse January to March this year, and decided to get back into it, and have been on and off since Easter really. I have to say this forum is keeping me going, it has certainly been a big motivator, and I am now working out more during the week. Thank goodness !

I think the next Karen Voight video I will invest in will be the Great Weighted Workout, it looks brilliant !

RE: Your profile

You are welcome. I love a person who is going about losing weight the right way rather than through some fad diet. (The guy sitting opposite me at work is on a high protein/low carbohydrates diet and I wish I could tell him that he is doing it all wrong. I have read a lot about this type of diet and it is sooooooo expensive to eat like this, definitely for celebrities and not mere mortals like us.)

I have been through some phases in my quest to understand how to lose weight and keep it off. Now, I know the only thing that works for me is too exercise, exercise, exercise. When I didn't have a steady job I could not afford monthly gym membership and when I could get access to a gym, I didn't really understand enough about exercise to benefit from my work outs.

Now I don't bother with the gym at all and I think it's waste of money anyway: better spent on a facial.

I love to help you in any way I can because I have been there - what ever you are doing and where ever you are, I will have been there and done that. I would love to share my experiences with you and help you avoid some pitfalls if I can.

RS scared me back in April when I previewed it. I was bored one workout day, and decided to just DO it. It was not very hard at all for me (but I'd been Cathe stepping for four months)and I love that knee-kick-knee thing. The way I learned it was I did only the first section twice a couple times for a workout, and then I would do section one and as much of section 2 as I could. Now I'm up to section 1 and 2.

RE: Your profile

Yes, you are right fad diets don't work, exercise is the key. Oh well, the guy opposite you at work will reach a plateau and end up not losing any more weight through his diet. And when he thinks he has done well, he will probably revert back to his old eating habits and pile the weight back on.
I have always used workout videos at home, I've never been to a gym ? Apart from when I was at college, learning Beauty Therapy, a certain amount of the course was exercise physiology, and we were taught how to use gym machines safely, in the college gym. But that is as close to a gym as I have been. I would rather spend the money on a new exercise video !

Its all about balance as well, isn't it ? Once you have reached a comfortable weight level, you can slowly increase your calories until you reach a point where the increase won't put any weight on you. I have to say I only roughly count calories, but I do weigh out my breakfast cereal in the morning. sometimes you can overfil the dish if you know what I mean !

Diets

The problem for me with diets is that they are foods that I don't normally eat. I am chinese and we eat differently. I don't eat much heavy dairy like cheese, butter and cream or deserts.

I do think that asians eat very healthily anyway, we gain weight but do not become grossly obese like westerners (unless you are a sumo wrestler). We eat only fresh foods that we cook ourselves.

Exercise is not just about weight control, but longevity, health, physical and mental stamina. This is more the eastern philosophy and that is why a lot of our exercises like Tai Chi, yoga, martial arts etc. includes meditation, concerntration and breathing exercises and takes years to develop. I have a more western outlook on exercise - quick, easy and burn, burn, burn.

I used to do yoga and quite liked it, but I had to go to a class for it. I can't do it through books and I haven't found a good yoga video (when I do, I will buy it). I am not sure if you can learn martial arts without a master either, although I would love to try.

Here's some tips if you want to stop weighing cereals: use a smaller bowl, add fruits to it like a banana. If after your cereal you still feel hungry eat more soft fruits like strawberries, peach, kiwis etc. That is a good way to up your fibre and vitamin intake.

RE: Diets

Thanks Yen ! I shall follow your cereal tip !
You are lucky, I love chinese food, you have great vegetarian choices ! :9

LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-02 AT 12:17PM (Est)[p]Hello Anna,

Oh God! I haven't a clue about fat grams and calories and stuff. I read alot about diets, but never paid attention to that (too much calculation and I am not clever enough to work it out for myself). I have never ever weighed foods - EVER! I concerntrate on food ingredients and contents, like boiled potato is healthier than chips, a fruit sugar is better than a sweet. You know what I mean.

I think it is not what you eat really, but how much of it. I think all foods are good for you as long as you don't feel bloated and stuffed at the end of the meal - that is when you gain weight. I try to eat more healthily for the fact that I think these foods contain vitamins and minerals that are essential to us. But let me tell you, sometimes a hamburger cannot be beaten. I wouldn't have a hamburger every day, 2-3 times a week maybe. Don't feel bad about enjoying food, if you work out regularly and as you get fitter you increase the intensity, then you will still lose weight even though you went to MacDonalds. I found this out when I had a bike at university and I was cycling every day, the only food that would sustain me was high fat foods like chips and pastries and hamburgers because I was burning calories like mad. I lost a lot weight then too. Ever since then, I have been trying to get same sort of intensity from my work outs.

I really believe that you can eat what you want as long as you don't over do it. A normal person will know when to stop.
