Revisiting Tracey Staehle's kickboxing

Last week, I decided to give Tracey Staehle's High Intensity Kickboxing workout another try.

The first--and only---time I'd used it before, I did NOT like it, for three big reasons: space issues---it uses a lot of front-to-back space if done 'as-is'--, a kickbox section that was too short for my tastes, and , most importantly, the very demotivating mood Tracey was in (it was obvious she was worn out, dead tired, and often looks pained during the workout, definitely NOT something that will keep me motivated.

It was on it's way to my 'get rid of' pile, but since I had never tried the sculpting segment (and thought that looked like it might be worth keeping the DVD as long as I already had it) I wanted to try that.

Feeling in a brave mood, I decided to do the whole workout, giving the first kb part of it a second chance.

Well, this time, I like the workout! But it took some 'fixing' to counteract the three big reasons I didn't like it at first.

For space issues, I modified the moves to not move forward (which usually takes a bit of tweaking with what arm punches first), and that worked fine.

For the 'too short' aspect of it, I thought of it as a warm-up to the toning section, and part of a longer workout.

For the demotivating mood and Tracey's often-pained looks, I just looked at the screen very little (but not little enough to avoid seeing the faces the blond background exerciser made from time to time: she looks unhappy throughout, but in the sculptiing workout, she often looks angry. And at one point, when Tracey announces that we are going to do some pulses, she almost rolls her eyes, and seems like she's about to swear at Tracey, and not in a 'we're just having fun and teasing' kind of way. Not to self: do NOT look at this woman!)

I can definitely see that most of what I didn't like about the workout was due to Tracey (and the backgrounders) being so tired and feeling bad. Even Tracey's often really bad cuing (when you're tired, your brain just doesn't come up with things to say as easily) which was probably even worse than in the final product, because there are a LOT of places where there's been some sound editing done---either her mouth moves and there is no voice, so I assume some really bad cuing was cut out, or the mouth movements don't match what she's saying, so one audio track was combined with another video track, I assume because Greg T. couldn't find a shot where both were good.

I have to add: the sequencing of moves is very good, and I didn't have to substitute any moves because of illogical progressions, or anything that made it impossible to follow good kickbox form (as I do with Amy Bento).

Now, this is a keeper workout for me (but probably still not one I'd do if I were in a bad mood, or needed a lot of external motivation, because it works when I have the 'oomph,' but not when I have to rely on Tracey and crew to give it to me.).

Hmm, food for thought. I've been looking looking looking at the new set. Trying to hold out for reviews, though...

Well, maybe I'll try it again then. I did it once long ago and the only thing I remember is that it was not motivating and not challenging at all. I actually ordered her step workout and she sent me this one by mistake. Well, for some reason I kept this one thinking that I would like it. Have you tried her step workout? Is it worth ordering?

Thanks for the update Kathryn. I am waiting for the new workouts to be released, and haven't ever tried Tracey before. If it's anything like the filming of her new ones, she probably did all of them in one day...hence the "tired" persona.

I had all three of her first workouts and I've since sold them. It's very unfortunate that she didn't stop and think about what home exerciser's would see and feel when doing those workouts. I think Tracey has tremendous potential, I really liked her personality in the workouts, but like you said, they were not motivating, many times Tracey's form or the form of her crew member's is bad (not just in the kickboxing). The workouts came across as 'strained' and that is not a good thing.

I'm hoping too that her next set is much better and not all filmed on the same day. Let's hope she learned her lesson there.

My two cents: I agree that Tracey's form was not inspiring or energetic. Her movements are a bit pinched. Also agree that the tone was not as expansive as Cathe or, say, Gin Miller. Those two are so inviting and encouraging! And I wasn't inspired by the set at all. But it ended up being a pretty good workout and the sculpting section (more endurance I think) was surprisingly tough. I'm going to keep the tape, although I do not use it often. One of the main reasons is that when I was ordering it, Tracey herself sends the confirmation emails and is so nice and friendly. She really wants to know if you like the workouts. I liked her!!! I want to like her workouts!!:)

OH my gosh, I really, really, really enjoy High Intensity Step Mix. There are a few "mess ups" this being her first offering, but the choreography is fun, fun, fun. She is somewhat complex and it's just challenging enough when I want serious sweat producing step cardio but I'm not quite in the mood for an Imax workout. Here is a detailed copy and paste of HISM from when I first rec'd it. My opinion hasn't changed a bit and I hope to see a lot more of this type of step from her in the future!
High Intensity Step Mix is my NEW favorite step workout. It is total fun. It is dancier than I'm used to, but now that I've done it from start to finish with only a couple of mess ups, I'm LOVING it. I recognize some tunes from the Hard Core series but there were some new, fun tunes also that I really, really enjoyed. The music and choreography go together nicely. There are a couple of cueing mess ups and on one interval they are off beat, but I just didn't look at the TV and kept time with the music. This kind of thing does not bother me since I will be doing this over and over again. It wasn't as tough as Imax or Imax 3, maybe more like Imax 2, but my heart rate stayed up and I was sweating the entire time. I found the music and the choreography to be ultra motivating. Love this workout!
There is not a lot of breakdown at all in this workout (at least not like I'm used to).
WU
Combo 1
Interval 1
Combo 2
Interval 2
Combo's 1 & 2 strung together a few times
"Learn" combo 3
Interval 3
Combo's 1-3 strung together once
"Learn" combo 4
Interval 4
Combo's 1-4 strung together once
"Learn" combo 5
Interval 5
Combo's 1-5 strung together once
Quick rate of perceived exertion
"Learn" combo 6
Interval 6 (they are off beat here, but it's a very SIMPLE interval choreography wise and you can stay with the music easily)
"Learn" combo 7
Interval 7
Combo's 6-7 strung together once
"Learn" combo 8
Interval 8
Combo's 6-8 strung together once
"Learn" combo 9
Interval 9
Combo's 6-9 strung together once
CD
After "learning" each combo you go right into doing that combo several times. You "learn" them quickly, believe me!
I like that you don't do the same combo 6 times before each interval...each interval is a different length (interval times are shorter than the total time of Imax intervals), so I like the "unpredictableness" of the intervals and the way the combo's are done in between the intervals. I like the uniquness of alot of the choreography and a some of the music is really cool and different. The workout clocks in at right around 65 or 66 minutes with WU & CD.
The following are premixes:
Stretch to Combo's 1-5 & Cool Down (about 36 minutes, includes combo's and intervals)

Stretch to Combo's 6-9 & Cool Down (about 33 minutes, includes combo's and itnervals)

WU to All Step & Cool Down (all the combo's as "taught and strung together in the workout, no intervals and this is about 48 minutes)

WU to All Interals & CD (all the intervals only...about 28.5 minutes)

WU to all Combo's & CD (combo's 1-5 strung together, combo's 6-9 strung togethter, combo's 6-9 strung together, no intervals...about 20 minutes)
Hope that helps!

Yea, I'm totally digging this workout!

Instructor comments: Tracey has a nice, soothing voice. She is very comfortable in front of the camera.

Adding that the combo's seem like they are repeated a lot(in writing), but there is not a lot of breakdown so you learn the combo and move on before stringing them together. This workout is serious FUN!!!
