Resting Throughout Videos??

Gemini girl

Cathlete
HI everyone-
Does anyone else need to rest throughout the video's? I did Muscle Endurance for the first time last night and I was DYING!!! Even in other videos, I have a tendency to take lots of breaks throughout, or I'd never be able to finish...

what do you think??

Hi there,

I take extra rests in a lot of the videos as well. I let my body dictate - if my heart rate gets up too high, then I rest a little extra between sets and walk around. Or if I'm pushing myself really hard, then sometimes I rest extra between cycles so that I can push harder in the next set or cycle.

When I workout with hubby, he absolutely insists on keeping up with the video with no extra rests, but I think the most important thing is to give it your all, and to listen to your body.

:)

I take quick water and weight change breaks throughout, and if I'm feeling especially winded or tired for whatever reason, I take a short break. That's the beauty of working out at home!! You can pause the VCR!

I usually take quick water breaks (< 30 seconds) throughout some videos -- my mouth just gets really dry sometimes. When working out in a gym, I find that do the same thing between exercises. Generally, I think very short breaks are fine as long as you don't let your heart rate get too low, particularly when doing cardio.

Hey Gemini Girl! I agree with everybody else...listen to your body and do what feels right. I did ME this morning and I still refuse to do that last set of leg presses!! Everytime I just shake my head and say....NO WAY!! Some days I push as hard as I can(since I am still recovering from surgery)...and some days I just do whatever I can. Remember Cathe is sooo much harder than most programs...so whatever you do is HARD! Take care, Donna.

I take brief breaks at different points in different videos for different reasons... in Supersets I break between the bicycles with the twist and without; in Push Pull I've got a break in there somewhere; in PUB I break twice in the pikes (wrists give out before the abs); and I break for various reasons in others... sometimes I am simply not moving as fast as Cathe between exercises and sometimes I'm already tired when I start (I get up at 4:45 a.m.). Don't sweat the breaks! (And I always take breaks in CTX Kickbox, Cardio Kicks and now Kick Punch & Crunch!)

I will often take longer breaks between sections or sets of weight training. I like to lift as heavy as I can, and I know I often need more of a rest than is allowed in some workouts the way they are (The pyramid workouts are a case in point: I allow myself as much time as reasonably necessary to change weight on PLB--which is longer than Cathe and the crew take!--and take extra breaks between body parts on PUB, and sometimes between sets).

Thank goodness for DVD! I can let the exercisers continue on without me, then just chapter back to catch up when I'm ready!

thanks everyone..at least I know I'm not alone with my "extended water breaks"! Today I did Imax2 and loved that she gave a 30 second break that was allowed- ha!

It is ok to take breaks especially if you're doing the workout for the first time. I'm sure you've heard this line over and over again, but you really have to *listen* to your body. I take breaks for three things while I'm doing Cathe videos 1. To drink water. 2. If my heart rate is breaking up my concentration. 3. If I feel I need to hold the stretches between sets a little longer. I just try to make the breaks super short (about 30-90 seconds) because I don't want to lower my heart rate to about what it was before I started to warm up and you don't want to do that either.

I don't always need to take breaks anymore on most of the intensity workouts, but I did for most of them when I first started doing them. I still find I need to take breaks during Boot Camp. I can do all the exercises but I find I need to rest after some of the cardio sessions. I can see why you take breaks during muscle endurance, that is one tough workout.:) Helen

good for you listening to your body. For me that has never been easy... Eventually you will be able to go longer. The important thing you are working out... often if I'd push myself too hard (no breaks) and then have to take time off....
