Resting Heart Rate

I donated blood the other day and they always take your RHR. I've been donating consistantly for about 3 years, every 8-10 weeks. The lady who had me the other day, went back in my file to check some things out....mostly how my cholesterol has lowered over the last 3 years. But also, my RHR has significantly dropped. This past week it came in at 60! (and that was after walking thru the lobby, down several hall ways, up a set of stairs, and sitting in the chair for just 2 minutes). I was SO proud!

lol

OK...so call me strange, but that proud moment just reinforced the importance of staying active and healthy!

Gayle,
WTG with the low RHR!! You ARE healthy!:) What a nice and generous thing you do by donating blood.
I look forward to meeting you on the RT!

Actually, Gayle, that's not even your TRUE RHR (you need to be truly "at rest" - lying down and not moving for a significant period of time - to get your TRUE RHR). Your actual RHR is probably significantly lower than 60 bpm! And that is really good! :)

Gayle, I was going to say the exact same thing as Emily. Sitting in a chair for 2 minutes is not even close to your resting HR. I have discovered that the only true reading is when you first wake up in the morning, before getting out of bed. And if you go as low as 60 just sitting in a chair, your actual RHR is going to be closer to 50. Awesome!!!!! You have the RHR of an athlete. Congratulations! I'm sure it took a lot of hard work to get there.

You know what I'm MOST amazed by? I'm amazed at just how impressed WE ALL are of something that's not visible....not pants size, not scale number, etc! WOO HOO!

And thanks too guys!

I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right! :D :D

I've had a similar experience. About two years b.c. (before cancer), I use to give blood regularly. This particular time the tech taking my vitals couldn't believe my RHR was 58. He took my heart rate twice because he thought he'd made a mistake.

Alas, I am not allowed to donate blood anymore since chemo.

Gayle-
I always knew you were an athlete, but it's nice to see some more stats to back it up;-)

Actually DH and I have had a few problems with "RHR" while donating blood in the past b/c if they let us sit too long before they take it we sometimes get into the 40's (DH has been known to dip into the 30's!) and then they have to go look up a special code to put on our charts and get the supervisor to sign off on it. Go figure!
