Remember Dick Cavett, anyone?

Here's a thread that may not get much attention, but I'll get it started anyway.

I have Netflix, and I'm getting the Dick Cavett show series. I watched him when it was on in the late 60's and 70's, but I REALLY appreciate it watching it all these years later. I'm baffled why he was not on longer, but I guess he did not have the appeal that Letterman does. He was (and still is) very funny himself, and did a great interview. I'm eagerly awaiting the DVD that has his Janis Joplin interview. Also the 2 with John Lennon & Yoko.

AND he had a great band with a bandleader who played the drums and a police whistle at the same time - way cool! Hard to imagine, but way cool!

Thanks for letting me share my walk down memory lane!

I remember when I could manage to stay awake late enough to watch this show. I loved it. The only show I seem to remember was one where a parrot somehow escaped up into the lights. Don't know why that made such an impression. Enjoy your stroll down memory lane.

I remember Dick Cavett a little. I would love to see the Janis Joplin interview. Did you see the play Love Janis. It was so good.

We loved Dick Cavett, class act with great intelligence and SUCH a dry wit. I think it's awesome that so many terrific shows have been dusted off and are available through current technology. Especially considering some of the drivel that is touted as 'entertainment' these days.

yeah, great show. I also read wonderful reviews on the DVD"s. Remember "Fernwood Tonight" with Barth Gimbel and Jerry Hubbard? I loved that too. The musicwas great also, Happy Kine and the Mirth Makers. Great memories.

The only show that I remember that had anything to Fernwood was "Mary Hartman!"

I loved the Dick Cavett show in the seventies. Do you remember how he was always quoting Groucho Marx and Woody Allen? He had the same self-deprecating wit and I stole a lot of jokes from him, Groucho and Woody. Considering my signature below, apparently I still do. }(

Miz Nancy, I KNEW you were a Dick Cavett fan, and was just waiting for you to weigh in! The comedians DVD I watched this past weekend included Groucho (who sang a couple of his wonderful songs like "Lydia the Tattooed Lady"), Woody Allen and Bob Hope.

The comedians were great. I love how happy Groucho seemed when he sang. He was never so happy as when he was singing a song, and he loved "Lydia". Lots of eyebrow-raising. Enjoy your DVDs!

Just close your eyes and imagine Groucho in action:

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
She has eyes that folks adore so,
and a torso even more so.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo.
On her back is The Battle of Waterloo.
Beside it, The Wreck of the Hesperus too.
And proudly above waves the red, white, and blue.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

When her robe is unfurled she will show you the world,
if you step up and tell her where.
For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paree,
or Washington crossing The Delaware.

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
When her muscles start relaxin',
up the hill comes Andrew Jackson.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of them all.
For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz,
with a view of Niagara that nobody has.
And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Come along and see Buffalo Bill with his lasso.
Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.
Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.
Here's Godiva, but with her pajamas on.

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Here is Grover Whelan unveilin' The Trilon.
Over on the west coast we have Treasure Isle-on.
Here's Nijinsky a-doin' the rhumba.
Here's her social security numba.

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Champ of them all.
She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet.
The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat.
And now the old boy's in command of the fleet,
for he went and married Lydia!

I said Lydia...
(He said Lydia...)
They said Lydia...
We said Lydia, la, la!

I loved the Dick Cavett show! I made sure to stay awake when he had John Lennon on. Those were great shows! I used to watch Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman once in a while, too.

:)

Coincidentally enough, I was out shopping this evening and saw a Dick Cavett DVD with just his interviews of Rock Stars! All the best of the late '60's early '70's. Timing is everything! I was tempted but $50.00 was just not in the budget for this. I did buy two workout DVDs though:+
