Remedy for falling asleep?

Hey Cathelets! Hope everyone's ready for a relaxing/fun weekend. Quick question, does anyone have a good way to fall/relax fast AFTER coming home from work later at night?

I tried meletonin, which helps me get to sleep fast, but I wake up a lot during the night and then in the morning I have a headache.

Any advice? I only ask cause for the next 2 weeks I have to wake up VERY early to get my workout in, so just need to know if there's a way to get to sleep faster after coming home from work.

Thanks ladies!:D

Alana, if you're making yourself get up extra early to work out, I think you'll have no trouble falling asleep earlier after the first day or so. You'll have a nice sleep deficit built up. That said, if you really need something, try Tylenol P.M. or Simply Sleep (same thing without the Tylenol). I use 1/4 the recommended dosage and it works like a charm!

Make sure your bedroom is dark (get light-blocking shades and/or wear a sleep mask)

If you take calcium supplements, or calcium-magnesium, take them late in the day.

Drink or eat something high in magnesium and/or calcium.

Take a soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts (magnesium salts), in a dark room (maybe candlelight) with relaxing music. (And make sure to keep the lights in the house dim from about an hour before you go to bed until bedtime (to help your body produce its own melatonin).

Use a white-noise machine, or keep a fan or air purifier going all night to creat white noise.

If you do a search, you'll find some other rather recent threads on this subject.

I recommend eating dinner at work at your usual time, instead of waiting until you get home. When I get home late and eat dinner late, it seems to make it MUCH harder to wake up the next morning. A light snack before bedtime is no problem though. I read that if you want to have a snack before going to sleep, stick to carbs and you will sleep better. I have found it to be true. Bread, crackers or popcorn don't disturb my sleep, but higher protein snacks, such as peanut butter or turkey, cause a more disturbed sleep.

Wow! You all gave A LOT of very OBVIOUS remedies to help me get to sleep faster!...I feel like I dork . I'm sure I could have thought of a least one of your guys's response! pah!

Thanks very much! I LIKE EVERYTHING YA'LL SAID. I'll be writing it down and using them on nights where I know I have to fall asleep fast!...

With the hole white noise thing...I totally use a fan, on low, every night! it totally helps with drowning out other annoying noises! THANKS AGAIN LADIES!

I'm going to parrot the wise ladies above, something about magnesium and calcium (yogurt), oatmeal nod me off and keep me asleep.

If I'm going through a spell of insomnia, I'll use a product called Silent Night, which is an herbal product that doesn't leave me feeling "hungover" the next day. I first bought it at my local health food store, but it's much cheaper at Vitacost:

As a warning, you do have to take it an hour before bed and it stinks to high heaven! My DH and I call them my "stinky feet" pills because that sort of captures the smell! :p

Hi,

I just bought Valerian Root at GNC last night and took it for the first time. It did not do much, but they say that you have to use it for a while ( sometimes up to a month) to get results. I have my fingers crossed.

Thanks Kathryn for the suggestions -- I, too, have trouble falling asleep at night (and staying asleep). I already have a dark room and a white noise machine, but I'm going to try taking my calcium supplement late in the day (as opposed to the morning) and get some Epsom salts and take a warm bath! We'll see!

I fall asleep easily, but wake up frequently at 3 in the morning wide awake. For years I denied it could have anything to do with caffeine, although I did try no caffeine after noon to see if that would help. Due to some health issues, my Dr. told me no caffeine. Since then, I have not had this problem! Huh, maybe it was the caffeine.
