Relay For Life Confusion...

Okay, I know this is about raising money, but.....at the event in my county (which starts tonight), they are serving corndogs, ice cream, and lots of "carnival-style" food (that is what is said in the newspaper). Why on earth would a cancer related event serve some of the worst foods? Shouldn't they be serving fresh veggies and fruit?

They are serving what will sell. Honestly, think about it. How many folks do you honestly think are going to buy the healthy stuff? Not many I'm afraid. If you want to raise money you have to appeal to the masses.

It's too bad they don't offer both so people can choose what they like. I often think this at airports and malls too, I don't mind all the junk food being sold, each to her own, but would it KILL them to put in ONE place with fresh salads, veggies, veggie burgers, and fresh fruit? I'd love to see just one airport or mall experiment with a place like that, and I'd love it if that place made more money than anyone else...

Actually, the participants usually set up camp and provide their own food (I'm stocking our camp with lots of fresh fruit and others will contribute whatever they were assigned.) But there are vendors who work these events every year and, yes, it's what helps draw the public.

You think THAT'S weird --- I actually attended an animal-rescue fundraiser and, while the vegetarian food was totally appropriate, Mr. Sausage King himself, Jimmy Dean and his wife sang! I have no idea WHAT the people who put that event together were thinking. Not to mention that he was just plain rude! When everyone politely clapped after the duo's horrible song, he DEMANDED that the performance deserved a standing ovation. And he totally belittled the the backstage crew in front of the audience when something went wrong with the lighting.

It was SO WEIRD!!!!!!

Along similar lines... Vegetarian Times magazine recently mailed me an entry form for a sweepstakes... the grand prize was some kind of hybrid vehicle... but the funny part was the 1,000 runner-up watches being given away to readers of Vegetarian Times... with "genuine leather bands". Too funny! Who thought of that?

As for the food, I have to agree... people only seem to buy unhealthy things. My husband owns a vending machine, and when he set it up, everyone at the shop requested "a few healthy options", so we put in orange juice, granola bars... those things all went bad. I don't think he sold even one. The peanut-butter cups, m&m's, and snickers were gone in a week.

I understand the food vendors is what the majority of the public wants to eat. But, the junk food should come with a warning! It could say: "This grease does not promote wellness or prevent cancer."

IMO, cancer raising events should promote wellness. Food vendors should stick to carnivals....

I agree that events like this should practice what they preach. I went to an animal rescue fundraiser and they served barbeque! I understand about the appeal to the masses thing, but if you are working to SAVE animals why would you have an event that serves food made from animals? Be an example and serve vegetarian items. It owuld make a point. A cancer event should take this opportunity to show people what kinds of healthy alternatives are out there.

Also, my brother went to West Point. You would think that with all the physical work these guys do everyday (and then sports on top of their normal PT) that they would be served decent, healthy food. My bro said they hardly ever saw a fresh vegetable and always served lots of crap. That just amazed me.

At our Relay For Life, the teams sold food and yes some was kinda junky. They sell what is easiest to set up, baked good, lots of grills, things out of coolers etc.
