Refined carbohydrate substitution

Bernard

Hi All,

Just wondering about clean eating ? When everyone modified their diets into clean diets, did you change your carbohydrates too ? For example, substituting white rice for brown rice, white pasta for wholewheat pasta, white bread for wholemeal bread, potatoes in their skins instead of potatoes without their skins ?
By doing this, does it make carbohydrates healthier to intake ?

Many thanks

Yours curious

Anna

Hi Anna!
A lot of people eat sweet potatoes or yams instead of potatoes. It would be helpful for you to read about the Glycemic index. This is a list of just how "refined" a particular carbohydrate is.

Actually it's really the amount by which the food sends your blood sugar up and therefore demands insulin production. Insulin surges, too much too often, can "wear out" your insulin sensitivity/ responsiveness and lead to adult onset diabetes.

I know there are technical terms for this but a search for the Glycemic index should yield you plenty of those and also a complete answer to your question.

Edited to add a couple of URLs (the second one has more detail):

Not only to just "carbs" but to everything in my diet.

For example:

Natural peanut butter instead of the stuff that we've known as peanut butter.

Butter instead of margarine. The body doesn't know what to do with margarine, but it does know how to break down butter and use it effectively.

Homemade foods instead of prepackaged frozen or boxed foods. I cannot go on and on enough about the huge difference this makes.

More whole grains that are in it's true form instead of meal breads and products. Barley, Qunioa, Buckwheat, Teft, Oats, just to name a few.

More beans and lentils just because it usually isn't in the typical American diet. Those two little categories is wonder food. Rich in folic acid which is very very low in the typical American diet.

Fruit, nut and seed oils instead of veggie oils. Rich in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, plus anti-oxidants. Those are such things as olive oil, walnut oil, etc.

These are just a few more things that has changed in my diet to make it better and more healthy. This type of a diet combined with the exercise has prevented sickness for me in three years.

Just my thoughts.

Keta. :D
