Recovery Drink???

Hi Cathe and other experts!! I have started drinking a protein drink right after my weight workouts. (1-2 scoops of syntrax nectar protein, to be exact) I was just wondering if it's beneficial to use some sort of recovery after cardio workouts as well. I do use it after KPC because it seems like kickboxing takes quite a toll on the muscles!! What do you recommend? Also, my protein powder is ONLY protein--no carbs or fat or anything else. Is that all that your body needs right after a workout? Thanks alot in advance for any advice!!!:) }( :)

Great question. I have a protein shake after my weight workouts and usually something with carbs in it after a cardio workout. I just seem to crave carbs after cardio. I'd love to hear what people.

Actually, what is most often recommended is a combination protein and carbohydrate replenishment within 30 minutes of the end of the workout bout, regardless of the mode (strength, cardio, both). Your glycogen stores become depleted because they've been tapped into to provide energy to the working muscles, and it is carbohydrates that replenish these stores.

If you're into spending a lot of money, I'm sure the specialized protein drinks you've listed will serve you quite well as long as you prepare it with a good carbohydrate-rich fluid or supplement it with a sports drink that is also carbohydrate-rich. However, IMHO a yogurt smoothie, some trail mix, a bagel spread with peanut butter, or some other regular food mix of carbohydrates and protein will do just as well.
