Really, REALLY good news!

The county Mental Retardation agency called me this morning. They have recieved funding from the Federal Government and can now fund placement of my son in a residence specific to his syndrome, Prader Willi. As you may recall, we have spend over 3 long years, since he graduated from high school, fighting with the county over whether Tristan is retarded and qualifies for their funding. We won a lengthy and expensive legal battle last fall, and have been waiting for money to become available. The next step is to find a home with space for Tristan. They are few and far between and we could lose our funding if he doesn't get placed quickly. The closest residence doesn't have an opening currently, but may be able to do something so the funding doesn't get withdrawn. We are setting up an overnight evaluation for Tristan sometime next month. Thanks for all your prayers and support as we have struggled with this problem.

Oh, Robin, what WONDERFUL news:) I'm so happy for you. You so deserve it and you know your son will be able to receive the care he needs:)

YAY!

That is great news, Robin! Thanks so much for letting us know. And keep us posted on the overnight evaluation.

At the home, he will have more limited acess to food than he has at our home. He will have a daily exercise program. He will have a job. He will have a social life. He won't spend the whole day sleeping or watching soap operas. And I can't even begin to explain how excited I am about being able to leave bananas on the kitchen counter instead of locked up in the basement. Or being able to open the refrigerator door without turning a combination lock. I get dizzy just thinking about it.

That is WONDERFUL news! I am so proud of your perserverance and commitment - very inspiring to me!

Robin, that's TERRIFIC news!!!! I'll be thinking of you and sending good vibes to you and to the nearest residence so he can get placed quickly. That's so great!!!

Robin, I'm so happy for you I'm practically in tears. I think I can't even begin to imagine how stressful your life is. I so want this to happen. Please know that I pray without ceasing.

That's wonderful!!!!! My niece is 10 and is retarded and has autism. They have to hide food from her too. She doesn't really eat it though, she just throws it and plays with it. They have to watch her 24 hours a day so she doesn't hurt herself. She could really use a residential center like that but my SIL and her husband have no idea where to even begin looking for help.

Kristy, that is a problem that we have had too. There are all kinds of agencies and programs available, but how do you find them? We would go to meetings with case managers and they would start throwing around all these "letters." "Have you talked to CIL, what about OVR, you should contact ARC. Everyone thinks when you have a special needs child, you just automatically know who to call and you will immediatley get the help you need. It don't work that way! Best of luck with your niece and tell her parents to never give up fighting for her, no one else will.

Oh Robin! I'm SOO happy for you! *Does happy does around the room with Robin* How wonderful that all of your efforts have paid off and the son you obviously love so much will be getting the best care. You really are a hero for fighting this battle. I'm thrilled you won!

With love - your fellow Buffett Fan...

My son has Asperger's syndrome and I had a teacher ask me who his neurologist was and all I could say was "Um, neurologist?"

Good news indeed, Robin! Congrats!!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow - what a ride!’ — Peter Sage
