This has probably been asked before, but why is there My 1RM and an Avg 1RM?

I confess that I haven't done my 1RM's and am regretting it BIG TIME. I'm thinking about postponing starting the STS rotation and taking the time to do the test. I did a test already for barbell curls, 43 lbs/10 reps. My 1RM is 57, and 1RM Avg is 35. Why are there two #'s? Should I be taking 60% of the 1RM or 60% of the Avg 1RM for Meso 1?

TIA!!

Melissa, when you print out your Workout Manager Card, it automatically will calculate the percentage for THAT workout according to YOUR 1RM. It is all done for you!

Thanks Debbie! I just watched the 1RM tutorial (which I should have watched a while ago ) and saw that the ONE exercise I tested was in there when I viewed my workout card.

I'm definetly going to post-pone STS for a week and see if I can bang out these 1RM's!

Great Melissa...what's another week, right? I hate to keep repeating myself but I have suggested to a few gals to print out the workout cards for the first couple weeks and just concentrate on THOSE exercises first when you start your 1RM's so it won't seem so overwhelming. Have FUN! Wait til you start STS! AWESOME!!!

Melissa, you won't be sorry that you delayed STS to do these tests -- IMO, this is what sets STS apart from other programs (and some other things too).

I am starting on Sunday, Feb. 8th so if you are done with your testing by then, we can start together;)

And BTW, 43# for 10 reps is AWESOME -- I'm jealous! I challenge you to an arm wrestle after we complete STS!;)

I just finished my testing last night. I questioned myself many times this week about WHY I didn't start earlier! Too funny. I'm planning on starting STS next week. Mine is scheduled for delivery today so that gives me time to look it over and preview some of the discs. I'm so excited about it!

average 1RM

It is confusing about why there is an average 1RM column at all. They made such a big point about not giving us Cathe's numbers, stressing the importance of using our OWN numbers, and it doesn't really matter what she does. (Plus, her filming days sometimes weren't up to her full ability because of how much work they had to do in a short period of time, so even if we were just "curious", it wouldn't have been an accurate observation). Logically, the same applies to the average 1RM. It doesn't mean anything for any individual...we need to start with our own abilities in each muscle group, and progress at our own rates. Similarly, even just being curious about others doesn't work here because there are different ways people have been entering data (one db vs two, when exactly is "failure", guessing based on similar exercise, testing when fatigued from other tests, etc). Therefore, even if there was some value in observing others' (or the average) TRUE, ACTUAL numbers, we can't possibly get that data accurately with the current method of input. If the professional trainers at Cathe's gym got lots of data on their customers in a controlled environment, that might work, for example.
Anyway...as long as people don't spend any time worrying about the 1RM values portrayed as "averages", it is not a big deal. If anyone is stressing, comparing, re-doing tests, or wondering what they did wrong (or what's wrong with their body) because of it, please just ignore that column. And most importantly, DON'T get injured trying to get "up" to an average number that isn't correct anyway (and doesn't need to matter to you personally even if it was).
The beauty and uniqueness of this system, is (as advertised) like having a personal trainer in your house to train and improve YOU!

Thanks Katie! I gave myself a little pat on the back after doing those 10 reps. I was really struggling on the last one but I guess we're supposed to, right?! Kind of gave me some incentive to test some more 1RMs!!!

I'm determined to get my 1RMs done this week so I can start on the 8th or 9th since I like my rest days to be Sundays!

Oh and an arm wrestling match?!?!? YOU'RE ON!! ;)
