Quick Question

From what I understand, no it isn't. They say low impact CAN be high intensity. However, it seems that only when I'm jumping around that the intensity shoots up there for me. Maybe it has to do with the fitness level of that person. I remember when I would sweat buckets just from the warmup;-)! To me that was high intensity!! He he he! Anyway, this is what I have heard. Anyone else hear what the difference really is?!?

Hi Girls, I believe "impact" refers to the stress put on your joints, etc. For example, when you jump during a workout and both feet are off the ground at the same time (ricochets, jumps, etc) that is high impact because ther is more stress put on the joints, yes, it will get your heatrate up therefore resulting in "high intensity" the downside is if you have joint problems it can result in injury. You can still get a high intensity workout from low impact activities (think Nordic track) but you might have to go faster or longer to get the same results. Hope that helps. jm ps HI AIM!!!!!

I don't think so....

There was a recent thread on the VF forum answered by a reliable poster who is ACE (AFAA too I think) certified, and the answer was that the definition of high impact is that both feet come off the ground at the same time. Jumping jacks, plyos, etc. That's not the same as high intentsity, though, because that high aerobic intensity can be achieved with low impact moves as well.

An interesting point that's just starting to come out (this was on the VF forum too, just last night) is that high impact, in moderation, is NEEDED for healthy joints, apparantly it strengthens the surrounding tendons, ligaments and muscles. The tricky part is figuring out the right amount of high impact to do if your joints are vulnerable to overuse - I'm still trying to figure out this one myself.

I modify a lot of Cathe's tapes to low-impact, but it's easy to keep the intensity up. I save high impact for when the moves demand it, and to be honest, it's more fun, for me anyway.
