Question on spinning classes

I'm thinking about joining a local gym to partake of their spinning classes...but I'm scared...heehee. I've watched these insane people in the spinning rooms appearing as though they are voluntarily being tortured x( }( ;( . I need alot of help in toning and shaping my legs (very skinny) and have always known that spinning would be a great addition to my workout regimen, but have just been really scared to attempt it for fear that I wouldn't be able to keep up in the classes. My endurance is MUCH better now than it has ever been before so I'm thinking about finally taking the plunge and trying it.

My question is...how hard are spinning classes really?? If I can make it through an Imax workout will I be able to make it through
a spinning class??? And is it easy to modify the intensity on the spin bikes??? I know these are really stupid questions :) :)...but like I said for some strange reason I'm really apprehensive about these classes. Any reassurance about them would be greatly appreciated :7 :7 .

Deni-
I started spinning 7 months ago and love it!- I was afraid too based on the CRAZINESS I saw on tv... Here's the bottom line.
As w/ any class:
Make sure the instructor is certified to teach spin (a reported 75% in Houston area are not certified to teach)
Avoid instructors that do not coach on modifications
Avoid instructors that only preach no pain no gain theory
Watch your heart rate!!! Depending on your body and its capacity to stay in 90% zone foe extended periods of time MODIFY as you feel your body needs to.
Stay hydrated!
If I modify at all now its usually just slowing the pace of whatever class is doing / resistance (rarely modify- I like leg muscles!)
Always listen to your body, we all have strong days and weaker days. I seem to count all my Spin classes as Interval days since my HR is up and down the entire class.
Hope that helps!!

Thanks Traci...

Your input is much appreciated. Luckily my heart rate can tolerate my upper max fairly well for extended periods...it's not really the cardiovascular piece that scares me...it's my leg muscle endurance capablities. But I guess you never know what you can or can't do until you try right!!! In regards to cardio I need something to change up my routine so I'm hoping that this works out for me!! I'm now off to join the gym!!

PS any other tips and suggestions others may have are still greatly appreciated :D :D .
