Question for those of you who juice

BAM

I'm feeling a need to juice. My body is craving it! What are your thoughts on juicing only organic vegetables? My finances are challenged right now and the thought of drinking concentrated pesticides is bothering me. Should I be concerned about this? Organic unfortunately comes with such an increase in prices. Do you have any recipes for a nice juice cocktail? I could use an energy boost and overall health tonic.

Thanks very much!

Hi there!

So, celery is the base of most of my juicing. Unfortunately, it is one of those items that you are suppose to eat organic if you can, as it soaks up the most pesticide. Even more unfortunately, celery (and produce in general around here) is crap most of the time. Since I love to juice, I snap up any celery I can get if it looks edible... actually, most of my juicing celery isn't even edible... I call it "ok for juicing, I guess".

My point is, if you can, get organic celery :D:p.

That said, my absolutely favorite juice is 1 head of celery with 1 bunch of parsley, 1 bunch of cilantro and 1 green apple. It will make about a quart of juice. I drink it as quickly as possible, just because I like it fresh. That's my staple. I eat so many other leafy greens that I don't feel like juicing kales, collards, spinach, etc... I eat it constantly.

My other staple is this: I juice a whole bunch of ginger at once and store it in a glass jar. Every day I hand juice 4 or 5 lemons and add that and some of the ginger to a gallon of water and drink. I love it. The ginger will only last a few days, so don't juice too much. the amount of ginger I add depends on how strong it is. Lately, our ginger is so weak that even if I pour a ton of it in, I don't taste it. Sometimes it's so strong that a small bit makes it powerful!

My SO loves carrot juice, so I'll juice carrot, apple and ginger for him.

Fidget Queen, thank you SO much for all the great information! I'm sorry you're not able to get the quality veggies you'd like but at least you're able to make lemonade from your lemons. (pun intended :D) I'm not a huge parsley or cilantro fan so I'd have to find a substitute for those but I love your lemon and ginger suggestion. Do you peel the skin on the ginger?

I had heard many years ago, that you shouldn't mix vegetable juice with fruit juice as your body would do better separating those differing enzymes. I know Jack LaLanne always mixed the two together as well as many others so perhaps that theory is shot out of the window.

I will definitely buy organic celery and even carrots if I can. Do you know if you're supposed to drink fresh juice on an empty stomach or doesn't it matter?

Thanks again for all the info! Happy juicing! :)

Hi Bam,

I juice almost everyday and my family drinks what I juice too - well the younger one only wants apple or apple/pear. The rest of us drink a version of this:

one whole head of lettuce
about 4 large kale leaves
4 sticks of celery
3 apples
2 carrots (optional - adds a lot of sweetness)
and a lemon

This is called green lemonade and tastes just like lemonade - that's why my eldest will drink it. It really is yummy. good luck with the juicing. your skin will look different. i've read that about 3 6 ounce glasses a day is ideal. I drink about 16-20 ounces/day. i hope that helps. i found the recipe on line. just google green lemonade.

You're certainly welcome.

I don't have any problem mixing fruit and vegetables, and I actually eat fruits and vegetables together in meals all of the time. I wouldn't avoid that if I were you, as I see no reason for it. That said, I don't add much fruit. Only enough to make it more enjoyable, as I don't think drinking fruit juice is the best thing for you (because there's no fiber to help regulate the speed at which the sugar enters the bloodstream). That's why I make celery my base - it has such a mellow flavor and I could drink it all day long. When you add in only one bunch of cilantro and/or parsley to the mix I mentioned, you don't taste it much. Herbs in general are just so full of minerals and vitamins that I like to include them. Basil and mint work beautifully, too. Well, mostly mint, as basil gets a weird taste to it if you don't drink it immediately. Actually, I think mint would make a delicious addition the lemon/ginger mixture. Hmmmm....

I prefer drinking the juice on an empty stomach, but there are varying opinions on this. Sometimes I just don't, because I eat so much that if I waited until I had an empty stomach, I'd never get it down. Some say you absorb more minerals with nothing in its way, others say you absorb more when you drink it with food as your body is already automatically in the digestive/absorptive process. I think the most important thing is to make sure it's fresh. It tastes better and I think it's healthier. I can't make myself get caught up in the exact when/how/wheres or I'll go crazy.

The only thing I am careful about is eating too much fat along with anything that has a lot of fruit it in. It causes major problems for me, so if you drink the juice after eating, try to make sure it didn't have too much fat. I'll have absolutely no digestive troubles that way (and I drink a whole liter at once usually).

Oh, I wanted to add that you should be careful about drinking the lemon water. Years ago, when I first started doing this, it caused problems with my teeth (way too much acid on my teeth all day long). Now I use a soft straw (think the large starbucks straws) and am careful to keep it off my teeth. Very easy, and I actually drink a lot more that way.

I've also considered juicing the green stuff and then pureeing it with fruit - Pineapple, for example, as that way you'd have the fiber for it. Try to replicate Odwalla or Naked Juice or something. I haven't done it yet, but it might be an idea for you.

Well, I'm willing to try this just to make my skin look different! I've heard the same thing about drinking wheatgrass every day.

I actually just bought the stuff to start growing wheatgrass, but I'm a little intimidated as I've never grown anything in my life.

O'h the green lemonade sounds yummy! What kind of juicer do you use? I have a Champion that's 20 years old. Want to buy a new juicer.

Why not make green smoothies (fruit and green leafy veggies) instead? (Basically what some of the Odwalla or Naked Juice blends are).

I suggest drink to use in an empty stomach. I don't have any difficulty mixing fruit and vegetables juices, and I actually eat fruits and vegetables together after an hour. Last month Dr. suggests me that took the healthy fruits or vegetable otherwise you'll be down very soon.

Been Doing Green Smoothies for 11 months...

Had to chime in here... I tried juicing years ago. Knew it was good for me, liked it, but found it messy and a little time consuming. Fell off and never stayed consistent.

Years later, still interested in getting more greens & overall more nutrition easily into my busy schedule... stumbled upon a Green Smoothie book. Was amazed at the simplicity of blending your greens...

Easy. Fast. Tasty. Helps me stay slim, recover from workouts faster and smooths out my sometimes-moodiness... :)

AND I've stayed consistent----have had 32 ounces of Green Smoothies (I add fruit and other good stuff too--like chia & flax seeds---to each drink) EVERY DAY for 11 months! (October will make a full year for me...)

I share my journey around Green Smoothies, in detail, here.
Big fan of Smoothies!

Also, side note: if you have a Robek's near you (a healthy drink/snack food chain) they sell fresh juice drinks AND green smoothies (along with a bunch of other types of smoothies).

adding to the discussion - I have a smoothie for breakfast each morning e.g. spinach, carrot, fruit, water, ice + powder and whatever oils, supplements etc and juice at the end of the day when I get home from work (first thing i do - takes 15 minutes start to finish moving quickly). I use my vitamixer and juicer pretty much every day and have done so since purchasing them about 2.5 years ago. I have a breville juicer. juicing is amazingly nutrient dense and with vitamixing (smoothies) you get wayyyyyyy more fibre while still getting plenty of nutrients. And, smoothies are quicker and easier to clean up. Both have their merits - so I do both. But if I had to choose one, even though I appreciate them both.............. I'd choose juicing hands down.

Thanks everyone for all of the great information! I haven't yet made it to the store to start my veggie shopping but soon will and with all the great suggestions, I should have no problem with creating some great drinks. Hmmmmmm, I just had a thought. Perhaps I could up the anti-oxidant factor (yeah, that's why I'd do it ;) ) by creating a wine cooler flavor and making it a "real" cocktail. I got it! The CCC - Carrot, Celery Cooler or how about Spinach Sangria. There could be a Squash, Shallot Chardonnay or my potential fave, Pumpkin "Pea"not Grigio! If someone wants to try them first and let me know how they are, please do so as I still have yet to make it to the store as previously mentioned. :)

Thanks again!

I make green smoothies all of the time. I was just thinking of it as something different and more "juicy" than my typical green smoothies. More green juice + just a little fruit puree. Most of my green smoothies are mild, spinach some kale, bananas and other fruit. Loads of the greens, but mild greens :).
