Question for the Curly Girls....

I know there are numerous threads that pop up here and there about product rec's for curly hair. I actually wanted to ask if anyone has read the book "Curly Girl"?

I just ordered it hoping for some enlightenment on taming my unruly curls. I get the general concept of the program, no shampoo and lots of moisture...but I am just curious if there is anyone that subscribes to this "curly-girl" method of hair care. If so, what is your routine (i.e., what sort of products do you use?)

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to tackle this subject! :)

I have never ever heard of it but I do use lots of moisture. I put a lot of Paul Mitchell's The Conditioner in my hair, it is a "leave-in". I really saturate my hair with it...using it as a styling product as well instead of mouse or gels....sometimes a dab of gel.

As for no washing...I workout too much to not wash my hair daily! For me, that would be gross.

I don't fight my curls, I've learned to work with them instead of trying to get my hair to do something it doesn't want to do. I focus on accentuating instead of changing...

I owned CurlyGirl and sold recently on Ebay, good book....but read it once and never looked at it again.

Have you ever looked @ http://www.naturallycurly.com//curltalk/

They have a forum that talks alot about the method. I don't follow it to a "T"...but never wash my hair more than (1) time a week...sometimes less. It doesn't bother me not to wash my hair daily anymore, I just "condition wash." everyday w/ DevaCurl One Condition - Once a week or so I will use the Lo-Poo to wash!

Currently I am using Boots Curling Creme (Britsuperstore.com) and Redken Curl Boost. Having great success w/ this combo, nice shiny curls, no Frizz!

Jennifer,

I HAVE been to that website!! Which is how I found the Curly Girl book initially. I got the book yesterday, skimmed through it. I am actually a little annoyed that I bought the book when the website is just as if not MORE informative than the book itself!

I think I am going to give this method a try. I totally "get" what they are saying about the shampooing and the sulfates being harsh for the hair. I will probably still wash though with a sulfate-free shampoo at least once per week.

How do you like the Devacurl line? I was thinking about ordering some of their products (because I am a product junkie...glad there is a name for it!).

Thanks!

I guess it wouldn't work for me if you weren't allowed to wash your hair frequently. My hair is still very greasy. It's just something that never went away as I got older. I am big on moisturizing the ends, tho.

I like that website. Its message boards are really informative.

If you want a good book about hair care, try Paula Begoun's "Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Without Me." I read the entire book & it was very educational, teaches all about shampoo & conditioner ingredients, what to look for, what to avoid, all that good stuff. Plus the entire second half of the book (oops, I lied, I didn't read the entire book :+ ) consists of product reviews.

It's a very handy book & I consult it a lot. She also has one for cosmetics, plus a website (www.cosmeticcop.com).

Thanks Laura for that second recommendation!

I really enjoy reading the naturallycurly website. I have found out soooo much information and from just applying certain techniques (like switching my shampoo and getting rid of all products with the evil silicone), my hair is already starting to feel healthier.

It sounds like the book you recommended has what Curly Girl lacked, which are ACTUAL product reviews. I am driving myself crazy trying to sort out the "good" from the "evil" products. I have a feeling it will be lots of trial and error.

Thanks again! :)

I really like the DevaCurl One-Condition, & DevaCurl Loo-Poo...Alot don't care for the No-Poo.
I see a huge difference in my hair when I just use DevaCurl...my hair is so much easier to manage, is soft & Frizz Free...I love this stuff.
I purchase at Ulta ( Not sure if their is one around you )...I pay $13.95/bottle. Alot of people like the Angel Gel also (DevaCurl Line)..
