Question for gym goers

Hi Everyone!
Hope you are all having a good night.
I have a question for those of you who attend group fitness classes....
Do you get annoyed when people clap or whoop, or does it motivate you and make it more fun?

For any of you instructors out there, same question... does it make you feel like the participants are enjoying themselves, or is it a distraction?

Thanks for your input!

Steph

Steph - I don't mind one way or the other. I figure if people like to get into the class and it helps them power through, let 'em whoop! It seems that the instructors I've had like the people to "make some noise."

I very seldom whoop or holler...I think it is because I am Catholic:p.

It can be very annoying/distracting if the instructor hasn't specifically asked the entire class to help her 'raise the roof' so to speak. Tuesday night in spinning one girl decided she just HAD to be in the front row and so jammed her bike up next to mine--a little too close for my comfort. Anyway she then started to groan really loudly while we were going uphill (All the while I'm thinking 'save that for your own bedroom, doll, cuz it's not really turning me on'!) If she were that uncomfortable/in pain she should have just toned down the resistance, right? Then she started singing along to the music (don't ya just love those types??) Such antics are unnecessary since people in our class are generally quiet. Most times we're all too occupied with heavy breathing and hanging on for life while the instuctor's shouting 'QUICKER!!' :)

I kinda like the whooping/clapping/yelling in some of the group classes I've done, but I also tend to be a whooper at other stuff too (concerts, football games, other sporting events).

It doesn't really bother me. I'm definitely not a whooper by any means. Heck, I don't even clap out loud. That being said, when the instructor leads the chatter/holler, I do feel a little embarrassed that I don't participate. I feel like I'm the one standing out. Kind of wish I had it in me to let out a little "uh huh, yeah".

I used to go to Jazzercise and there was a chick who liked to let loose with a really big "whooooooooo!" as if to say "this is toooough" She would bust out with that during squats...squats without weights and I would think to myself "WTF? Are you kidding?" When I am working hard I go into almost a sort of meditative state so I am quiet and not a fan of whoopers who are usually much whoop-a-doo about nothing anyway.

Capital idea, Liann, but since I am such a decent and sophisticated lady I restrained myself admirably :D

P.S. Maybe next week I will try to 'accidentally' elbow her in the neck during final stretch... :p

Shelby - I would have been tempted to knock her off that bike! ;)

As an instructor...

Depends... I teach 5 classes a week, 4 RPM and 1 step (which I make dancy) - I absolutely loathe people chattering to each other in my class during a workout - it's distracting!. In RPM I do love it when my participants grunt and encourage each other - I have a class where I have a few high level cyclists and they are great fun to push and their energy feeds the whole class.

My step classes are just one big party and if everyone's getting down on the dance floor, a few whoops and extra claps gets the party going!
