Question for Fitness Freak or those in the know

Hi Debbie (and others). I was watching some of the info you posted in you Dec rotation (LOVE that you do these BTW [ohhh - rubbing salt in it huh :p]) and in particular the "not so much cardio" issue. Looking at the STS breakdown, Cathe has also recommended keeping the cardio and weights for separate days, OR AT LEAST NOT IN THE SAME SESSION.

So here is my question -- assuming I don't get in a "fasting cardio session" first thing in the a.m., but still want to do cardio and weights on the same day -- how long would you say to separate them by? I'd really appreciate any info or thoughts. Thanks!

If you can do a split workout, I'd do weight training first thing in the morning and then cardio in the evening. Is it possible for you to workout twice a day? What body type are you?

Lorrie-just thought I'd add my 2cents here. Remember when I was using a trainer for that very short time??? Well, she 'allowed' 3 sessions of extra cardio, 35 minutes each, each week. But said the same thing Debbie just said....that you should do weights in the AM and cardio later, at least 3 hours later.

But can I just add 2 MORE cents? The reduction in cardio and increase in heavy weights does WONDERS for this body of MINE!

Really? Weights first? How come? I do cardio in the am & weights in the pm. I'd heard that cardio first thing in the morning was most effective for burning fat, something about your glycolic index level burning fat while you're asleep, so you keep it going if you jump into cardio right when you wake up.

It's my personal preference anyway--I love weight training, I do cardio b/c I have to. I'm just too tired at the end of the day to do something I don't much like.

Yeah, this is what I'd heard.:
Morning Cardio

I do advocate doing cardio first thing in the morning before eating any carbohydrate meal. If you run or do cardio after training (like I do) I would advocate eating your protein, Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) and other supplements (including CLA) before doing the cardio, and it will actually further supercharge fat loss while preventing muscle catabolism (wasting).
I do recognize that there is no conclusive evidence that morning cardio is the best method, however there's quite a bit of scientific literature supporting that doing cardio prior to ingesting carbs will burn more stored body fat (because glycogen is not burned). There are others that will argue with me here because they believe in the energy balance hypothesis, which states; the time of day you burn calories or eat calories doesn't matter, as long as you burn more calories than you consume in each 24 hour period.

Here are some others: http://www.sixpacknow.com/fatlosstips.html

But I think the bottom line is, do what works best for you.
