Hi Cathe!

Your new series looks fantastic and I am so looking forward to it!

I was wondering if you could describe the process of how you go about designing your workouts and choreography; do you sit down with pen and paper and do an outline first, or do you practice the exercises in various orders to see how things flow first? How long does it take for you to design the workouts from start to finish? Do you make changes as you rehearse the routines?

You have such a flair for designing choreography and routines!

:)

How sweet, thank you Abbe! Reading your post I would have to say : All of the above :)

Each time I create a workout, it evolves a little differently, but in the end I get to where I need to be. Sometimes I am just driving along in my car and a thought comes to mind.... sometimes as I browse through the music selections for upcoming workouts, I get inspired by just hearing a certain sound in the sample that makes my body move a certain way..... sometimes I get back from a convention with tons of ideas and adrenaline running through my mind and try to put it into words while the moments hot....sometimes playing at the playground with my kids or attending their soccer/baseball games I get inspired by something I see or do that becomes a preliminary workout script....sometimes watching my older workouts reminds me of something I haven't done in a while and I update move and give it a face lift,.... etc.

Depending on what the workouts contents are, I begin composing all the thoughts on paper and testing out moves, flow, and sequences. I even test them out with my students in class. This can sometimes last for a couple of months. When I think I have it the way I like it, I will begin a trial rehearsal with the cast and literally throw it at them and see how they do. That many times gives me an indication of what the viewers at home will do too. When I see the tricky spots, I work out the kinks and make it smoother and call the cast back in to try it out. Then once its pretty smooth the real rehearsals begin and we just do the workouts over and over to the actual music so that it is all pretty close to seemless on film day.

There is still lots more to it, but that is the general idea. Thanks for asking :)

Thank you, Cathe! It is obvious that you and your cast spend a lot of time and effort into creating and perfecting your routines. That is so interesting about how the music inspires you to move in certain ways, and how you are inspired by so many different sources in your life.

It sounds like a tremendous amount of thought goes into the process. Thanks for taking time to keep it new and fun for us.
