Question about wine?

MARY1616

Cathlete
I was wondering if anyone finds they are able to enjoy a glass of wine at night without it effecting your weight? I find that I carry all of my wine consumption smack dab in the middle(urgh!) Thanks for the input

Mary....honestly it would be hard to consume any type of alcohol on a daily basis without gaining weight due to the high sugar content in alcohol. With that said...I do enjoy a glass of merlot but I limit it to 1-2 glasses a week. However, I do include those calories into my daily caloric intake.

Um...I have a glass (or two! :p) of wine every night. It's my one guilty pleasure. I love trying and finding new wines.....and enjoying every sip. I don't drink to get drunk at all but wine tasting (and wine drinking ;)) is a nightly pleasure of mine and has been for years. I've visted dozens of wineries throughout the U.S. and Europe and absolutely love being the novice conossieur that I am. I have yet to gain a pound.

That's my personal experience, though. Everyone is different.

Hey Allison - good to *see* you again! BTW - I got the unlimited resolutions with iTrain for this year - thanks again for your guidance there.

I like to drink Absolute Pear and soda when I want a drink, although I enjoy wine too. I don't drink during the week (unless it's been a bad day - ha!) I think that it all depends on how your body handles sugars/carbs, etc. There are health benefits to wine and liquor even - like Sonya said, if you are counting calories, just be sure to figure these in too.

I've recently discovered the pleasures of having a 1/2 or one full glass of wine a few nights every week and haven't noticed any ill-repute because of it. I am having issues with the scale but that started happening before I even got into the wine. In fact, before NYE I had lost a few pounds and was indulging in the wine the entire time. :)

A glass of wine a day isn't gonna necessarily make one gain weight. Of course you have to take into consideration all of the other calories consumed throughout the day and your activity level. If your diet is otherwise clean and you are fairly active the wine should not be a problem.

I USED to drink wine every night..but I quit smoking a month ago and realized it was too hard to drink wine and NOT smoke, plus I am trying to not gain weight (I smoked for over 15 years so this is big for me and a huge change)...I allow myself one night of debauchery and drunken, wild, wanton behavior a week..;) DH and I watch movies on Saturday night and that is now my "wine night". He keeps me away from the cigarettes that night and its working so far...:)

A few years ago however, I noticed that the wine was starting to go to the belly area...it never ever used to either. So its probably a good thing that I don't drink but one night a week now. Plus when I drink wine I get sorta "snacky"...meaning, well, I want to eat snacky stuff and nibble, so again, it all depends. Having a glass of wine each night is actually a healthy good thing for most people.

ALLISON, YOU BEAUTIFUL CHICA, WHERE THE HECK YA BEEN??

Ha! your Sat night is the same as our. We pop open a bottle of vino and watch either the Svengoolie movie or another bad horror movie. Its our "thing"

I haven't noticed any extra poundage from it. From the too many Christmas snackies I ate with the wine, yes. But just from the wine, no. I also get the munchies with wine, and try to avoid it. But the Christmas fudge and chocolates just went so dang well with it!

Nan

I usually will have a snack with my wine but I plan for it. I have a snack after dinner/before bed almost every night so if I want to have a glass of wine I make sure I don't eat my snack first so I don't have to have TWO snacks. I also make sure whatever I eat is healthy. The only time I break the healthy snack rule is on the weekends if DH and I are playing with the WII while I'm indulging. :D

I am thinking that I should factor my wine into my daily caloric intake and might I say...what a knowledgeable group of ladies you are!!!:)

I absolutely love wine but it has become a migraine trigger for me:(:(
My migraine doc told me that I have to stick to gin or vodka because it's not fermented like wine.

It sucks! I have one glass of wine, I have to take an imitrex. I occasionally indulge knowing I have to take some migraine meds. I can't make a habit of it because I can't abuse my migraine meds that are working for me. If I overuse my imitrex, it could stop working for me.:(:(

Allison, I envy you! I love visiting wineries:cool:

I agree that wine is fine (!) as long as you take it into account in your daily caloric intake. DH and I make a yearly trek to our state's wineries and buy (almost) enough for an entire year! I drink maybe 2-3 glasses per week. No weight gain.

A glass of wine (particularly red - heart healthy) never hurt anyone, just ask the millions of French and Italian women.

Another Absolute fan here, but in Raspberry with cranberry. Two shots plus the cranberry comes up to 150 calories and I figure it in with my daily totals. The thing about alcohol is the way your body metabolizes it. Experts say that only about 5% of what your drink may be stored as fat if you have a surplus that day, but rather then getting stored as fat, the main fate of alcohol is conversion into acetate. The body then burns acetate rather then fat for energy, until that is all used up. I just limit it to one drink a couple of times a week and its works for me.
