question about weight plates

I bought a cheap 100lb barbell set from Kmart for $24.99, but the lightest weight I can use is 20lbs. Its kind of heavy for me starting out for the bicep work in ME. the plates are vinyl and i cant find them anywhere. can i just use any plates i can find. i need some 2.5lbs and some 5lbs. I feel dumb asking this.

hi, you can use any weight plate as long as they fit your bar...meaning if your bar is a standard bar (1" in diameter) you would buy standard plates..if it is an olympic bar you would buy 2" plates...

I am guessing at that price it is a standard bar...Go to Walmart as they carry weight plates and you should be able to buy some 2.5 and 5 lb. plates...

hope this helps!

You should be able to buy plates and use them on your bar.

Play it Again Sports (if you have one near you) is great for plates and dumbbells, but you can get plates at most sports stores.

>will it matter that they will be metal instead of vinyl?

i use metal plates and vinyl plates on the bar i got at wal-mart. i also purchased a second barbell at play it again sports so i don't have to waste much time changeing. the barbell set i got was $20 with 100lbs and my play it again barbell was $12(used but in excellent condition). play it again sports in much cheaper to by equipment but if there is not one in your area wal-mart is the next best stop for weights.

Metal plates will eventually rust if they get around humidity. Rubber coated plates won't. I've replaced all my (rusty) metal plate with rubber-coated (and recycled the metal ones as a metal recycling facility).

thanks, where do you buy rubber-coated ones?

I got mine when I ordered my Troy Lite barbell (www.fitness1st.com ? I think? It's been a while.) I've also seen some sets at Walmart that have them.

When buying weights, it's always a good idea to try to get them locally, to save on the shipping costs, which are high because of the weight (though I think the Troy set was worth it, even with the near $20 shipping cost).
