Question about wedding etiquette (clothing-related)

I usually have the reverse problem - DH was always used to dressing WAY up for family events, etc. I remember trying to convince him (to no avail) that my family wears jeans to most functions (except weddings, etc.) - I'll never forget the look on some of their faces when he walked in for his first Christmas in a 3-piece suit and couldn't understand why no one else was dressed "appropriately"! :D He's getting much better finally, but he's always eager to break out the suits and ties. I'm usually the one who gets nervous about dressing up enough for HIS family's functions - I'm much happier on turkey day in comfy, expandable clothing than in a fancy dress!}( (My mother tells me not to complain, seeing as she has a hard enough time convincing my father to wear CLEAN clothes!)

I don't think it matters if he wears a tie or not, just as long as they look nice.

Heck I have gone to weddings/receptions and people come in jeans and a shirt, even shorts.

My hubby usually is a nice shirt with dress slacks.

IMO, especially at the reception part, more than half the men will have at least their coats off and some even their ties, especially when everyone starts dancing. Your SO will already be ahead of everyone!:)

Go, have fun and enjoy, thats really what its about!

PS You should have came to my wedding...super casual...at the house...by the mayor....because I am super shy and couldn't imagine getting up in front of alot of people, we had to keep it simple!

If the reception is at a gallery, then that is probably pretty casual, so just a tie should be fine. You kind of have to go with what you know about the couple and the venue. Use those as your cues.
I'm out here in NY where everyone pretty much dresses up for weddings unless told not to. I've been invited to one "regular" and two "formal" weddings. Full-length dresses on the women and suits or tuxedos for the guys!

Shelley, are you sure your SO and my DH aren't the same person? I've been able to get a jacket or a tie on mine in very rare instances. He generally puts the tie on, wears it for about an hour, then takes it off, rolls it in a ball and stuffs it in the bottom of my purse. Suave. ;) I suggest your nerd do the same. At least he'll be showing up wearing a tie, so he'll make a classy first impression. ;)
