Question about S&H

Cathlete
I am considering purchasing the S&H DVD. My question is what weights do you "typically" use for these? Reason I question this is I don't know if I own enough weights. I recently got back into lifting (about 3 months ago) so I'm basically starting over. (years ago I used my brother's weights so now I"m buying my own) The only Cathe vidoes I have right now are L&G, MIS, and the intensity series. I only have 40lbs for my barbell. I use 40lbs for dips and squats and I can do chest presses with 35lbs and anything else I use about 25lbs. The highest dumbell that I have is a 15.

Thanks for your advice. :)

Hope you dont mind me jumping in w/ another question regarding slow & heavy.
How long are the workouts on this DVD?

Hi!
I just finished up a rotation of S&H. Cathe uses a variety of barbell and dumbbell weights. The highest barbell weight used is 50 lbs and highest dumbbell is a single 40lb. The lowest dumbbell weight is 5lbs. Most exercises have 3 sets of 8 "very slow" reps. I either match or exceed the weight loads used in the workouts but YOU need to use the weights that challenge YOU not necessary what Cathe or anyone else uses. Instead, use her weight loads as a guideline to either work up to, match, or eventually exceed. All three workouts are close to 60 minutes long. I have all the weight loads for each exercise written down so if you want a more detail, just let me know and I can post them.:)

Hi Dana,
You won't believe this but I typed all this information and when I went to post, it said my login time expired and I lost everything x(
AAARRRGGGG! Anyway, here's the info. As you can see, most of the upper body work uses dumbbells of 15lbs or less so I think you would be fine to get started with what you currently have. You can use a barbell for the higher dumbbell weight in the leg & chest work (except flies). I still use a barbell for plies because I lift heavier and it is more comfortable. I have purchased dumbbells up to 40lb (my DH lifts too) and find it somewhat more challenging using dumbbells for chest. S&H is a great strength training program and I really think you would like it. It does require a lot of focus & concentration and is slow in nature but the results are awesome. Hope this helps your decision to buy......you won't regret it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to type this. I really do appreciate it.

I have so many DVD's on my "want list" but I think that this just may be moved to the top. :)

Thank you NinjaMom for taking the time to type this not once but twice! You remind me how rare and wonderful the people of this forum are!

Hugs :)

Ideally, you should use whatever weight allows YOU to feel like the last 2-3 reps are tough,, and that your couldn't do another one with good form. Whether that's 20# or 50# doesn't matter, as long as it challenges you.

And also, PurpleM, from what you say of the weights you use, I'd say you were pretty advanced already and reay for S&H. I can't bench press as much as you and I use S&H.
