Question about Core work, planks, pilates, etc

Can someone please tell me exactly what kind of exercises they are talking about when they say, "core work or planks". I'm just use to the traditional type ab exercises. After 3 c-sections I'm having trouble getting rid of my pooch. Will core work help that? What type of videos would you recommend for this kind of exercise? Thanks for you help!!

Core work focuses on torso muscles, especially the abs & lower spine. Planks are just one way to work the core - it's essentially a toe push-up held at the top position. But there are many variations & add-ons. Compared to traditional ab work, core work is deeper while traditonal ab work works the muscles on the surface of the body. I like a combination of both.

You won't get a 6-pack from pilates or other core work alone (unless genetically gifted!). But many find it's the only thing that reduces the "pooch" or "pouch". More importantly it provides a strong base for fitness & daily activities.

Cathe's Intensity Series has some very challenging core work. Her Ab Hits DVD would provide a better intro to core work with some great traditional abs.

A beginning Pilates video would also be a good intro to core work. There are lots to chose from & the best choice for you really depends on the type of instructor you enjoy. You can do a search on "pilates" to look at previous threads discussing favorite videos.

Hope this helps!

Hi Debra,

That was a great explanation! I didn't realize that core work was good for the pooch! The ab work I am doing is helping, but I can't seem to get rid of that pooch.

Ok, time to program in some major core time each day!

Thanks again!
