Question about Certification

Hi Cathe,

Thanks for all that you do. You are an inspiration. I live in Germany as my husband is active duty military. He is preparing to retire within the next year and I will return to the States. I am an AFAA Certified Personal Trainer, but am interested in advancing my education in this industry. I will soon undergo the Physical Fitness Specialist Course and Biomechanics of Resistance Training through The Cooper Institute (Cooper is coming to Germany to service the sports and fitness military folks here). I am an administrator and have advanced degrees in family studies, sociology, and counseling, but I really want to pursue fitness when I return to the States. I was thinking of studying for the ACSM CPT exam. What are your thoughts in this regard? Do you think that ACSM is the "gold-standard" as I've been told?

Thanks so much,

Laura

Hi Laura,

I am not Cathe, but I believe to get the ACSM CPT exam you must have a master's in an exercise related field (exersice phys., kines., etc.). In my opinion this is the gold standard since both AFAA and ACE follow the ACSM's guidelines. However, there are other good certs. (AFAA, ACE, Cooper, etc.) and in some areas certain ones are preferred to others. I believe the reg. group fitness cert. and pt. cert. do not require a degree. The website states the minimum requirements for each. Hope that helps and good luck with your Cooper certification!

Sorry Laura I think I may have given you the wrong info the reg. CPT does not require a degree only the clinical personal trainer certifications require one. Thanks.

Thank you so much for posting to this topic. I was fearful that I'd never get a response from anyone. ;-) Many, many thanks!

I just went to an AFAA workshop yesterday in Ramstein, Germany on Injury Prevention. It was really good. I can't wait until Cooper come over here for two weeks of intensive training.

My best,

Laura

Hi Laura,

I recently (December) attained my ACE personal trainer certification, and I just started back to school for a 2-year degree in exercise science and technology. The department head told me that this 2-year program is designed to prepare students to take the ACSM personal trainer exam. It'll take two years to study, but that's fine.

Based on that information, I don't think you need a master's degree, but I don't think I'd attempt the ACSM certification without some college courses, at the very least. I do believe ACSM is the gold standard, so it makes sense that it would be difficult to pass their exam.

I wish you great success!
